Video Transcript: What is SEO? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and it is a technique used to get your website recognized on search engines and maximize traffic to your site. Search engines use several complicated algorithms to figure out which pages they will display in the results of a search. These algorithms recognize different “ranking factors” when they deliver results to someone searching for something on the web. If you want your business to show up in the search results when someone is searching for the things that you offer, there are many things that your website needs to contain. Some of the factors that search engines look into when ranking a page for a certain key word are the quality of a page’s content, relevant HTML tags, and if the words on the page are relevant to what one is searching for. There are many other factors, some much more complicated, that search engines use to determine whether or not a certain web page will appear in the top results for a search. The thing is, if you have a website, search results matter. When you have higher rankings in a search engine, more people find your website which means more people find your business. This means you are reaching a bigger audience and gaining more customers. It is very important to have your website properly optimized so that search engines know how to direct people to your site. Optimizing a website properly can be a very challenging process if you are not well versed in how search engines work. It takes time, and an in depth knowledge of Search Engine Optimization to set up your site properly so that people will find your business. Hiring a professional for SEO ensures that your site will be properly optimized, saving you valuable time and money. We offer Search Engine Optimization services to get your website at its full potential, and help you bring in more business! Contact us today for more information.

SMX Advanced recap: Lies, Damn Lies, and Search Marketing Statistics

At SMX Advanced 2016 in Seattle, Adria Kyne, SEO Manager (North America, Australia, and New Zealand) for Vistaprint, gave a presentation on doing search marketing testing — or any kind of marketing testing — that provides valid results. Kyne made the point that by not understanding the importance of validity of sample size, we often end up unintentionally lying to ourselves, and we may actually “prove” the opposite of what we think our tests are showing. Adria Kyne, Vistaprint Common problems with marketing testing We need to start with understanding the point of our testing: We want to know what is really happening when people visit our site. We want to be sure we can use the results to predict likely future behavior. We also need to understand the basics of hypothesis testing: We want to know if the variation we are testing is better, worse or the same as the original. We don’t want to see a positive outcome that isn’t really there (a false positive, or Type I error). We don’t want Search Engine Land Source

Bing ads bolsters Keyword Planner targeting and rolls out access to the UK, Canada & Australia

Many paid search marketers will be pleasantly surprised the next time they go to perform keyword research in Bing Ads. Firstly, those in the United Kingdom, Canada & Australia will now have access to Keyword Planner. Secondly, Keyword Planner will have an additional targeting feature to help users find keyword suggestions based off of product categories. Keyword Planner was launched last year and was only available for folks within the United States. Now those in the United Kingdom, Canada & Australia will find Keyword Planner under the ‘Tools’ navigation element in their accounts. Users will also have the ability to show targeting options such as cities, states/provinces and will pull historical search statistics across all of these locations. Stats include average monthly searches, competition, suggested bids, ad impression share and traffic estimates. With this new change the Campaign Planner tool will be removed from the Tools tab as it is being replaced by Keyword Planner. Google test removes the estimated number of search results

Google seems to be testing removing the estimated number of results found for a specific search query from the top of the search results. Typically, when you do a search on Google, Google will show you the “about” number of results Google found that matched that query. Google is testing removing that on some of their user interface tests. Derek Edmond shared screen shots with me on Twitter showing how it was removed from his view. Here is how it should look, with the estimate count: Here is how it looks without it: Google is constantly testing new interfaces, so it is unclear if Google will decide to remove this in the future. Google has told us that these estimates are just estimates and should not be used for accurate reporting.
