The evolution of phone marketing

In the beginning, there was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X. And it was not good. By 2017 standards, it was barely a phone. Virtually zero coverage, a price tag that translates to almost $10,000 of today’s dollars, and completely devoid of apps. It also had a 10-hour charge time that only translated into about a half-hour of use. Truly a pinnacle of technology. From town criers to SMS While 1983’s big breakthrough was a far cry from the iPhone X, it was a harbinger of things to come — a personal telecommunications device that could be carried outside the hardwired home. It took another 10 years to make cellphones that you could comfortably — well, somewhat comfortably — carry in your hand. And it would take a few more years still before the advent of the flip phone. Ultimately, it was almost 25 years after Motorola’s original mobile phone before smartphones appeared and mobile marketing as we now know it Search Engine Land Source

US court orders Google not to comply with Canadian court’s order delisting search results

A federal court in California has blocked implementation of a Canadian Supreme Court ruling that ordered Google to delist websites associated with a company called Datalink from Google’s global index. The Canadian decision (Google Inc. v. Equustek Solutions) was an example of a court in one country asserting authority over global activity outside its jurisdiction. Because Google exhausted its appeals in Canada, the company filed an action in the US District Court in Northern California, asserting that the Canadian decision violates US law. The US federal court agreed with Google and issued a preliminary injunction — effectively overruling the Canadian Supreme Court: Congress recognized that free speech on the internet would be severely restricted if websites were to face tort liability for hosting user-generated content . . . It responded by enacting Section 230 [of the Communications Decency Act], which grants broad immunity to online intermediaries . . . The Canadian order would eliminate Section 230 immunity for service providers that link to third-party websites. Search Engine Land Source

Google rolling out new curved mobile search results interface

Kashin / Shutterstock.com It appears that Google is now rolling out the new curved mobile design that they have been testing for several months. Many searchers have reported seeing the new design, and several of us at Search Engine Land have replicated it. The new design started rolling out earlier this morning, and now more are seeing it live. This would be the first major redesign to the Google search results since 2013 saw the unified card design released. We reached out to Google for confirmation of the rollout but had not heard back from them as of this writing. This story will be updated with a statement from Google as soon as we have one. Google is known for conducting many user interface tests, but this design appears to be a full rollout. Here is a screen shot of the new curved look for the Google mobile search results from my iPhone: The post Google rolling out new curved mobile search results Search Engine Land Source
