After rare Google confirmation of on-site penalty, Natural News is back in Google’s index

In a rare move, Google confirmed that a publisher named Natural News was penalized and deindexed by the major search engine over Google webmaster guidelines violations. In fact, Google’s John Mueller specifically said the site was using sneaky mobile redirect, and once that is “cleaned up, the site can submit a reconsideration request through Search Console.” It seems like they did clean it up and submitted a reconsideration request through Search Console, because the site is now back in the Google index. A site command now returns the home page and 440,000 other pages from the site. It is incredibly rare for Google to confirm when a site is penalized to the press or public. But in this case, the site was claiming it was removed because it was pro-Trump. They started a White House petition against Google, and they are still encouraging people to sign the petition even after they have been restored to Google’s index. Abdul Sattar Edhi Google doodle celebrates Pakistani humanitarian who founded Edhi Foundation

Today’s Google doodle honors the Abdul Sattar Edhi, a man who dedicated his life to providing social services for those in need. Crediting Edhi with being a “global-reaching philanthropist and humanitarian,” Google says Edhi was born in India but moved to Pakistan soon after it became a nation, founding the Edhi foundation in 1951. From the Google Doodle blog: He soon noticed that many Pakistanis lacked shelter, medicine, education, and other essentials, and was moved to help in any way he could. He began by simply asking others around him to contribute time or money, especially when a flu epidemic hit Karachi. Google reports that the Edhi Foundation operates 24 hours a day and offers multiple social services, including homeless shelters and medical care. “Most notably, the foundation operates the world’s largest volunteer ambulance network in Pakistan,” says Google. Why are we so afraid of links? Back in the old days of SEO, we loved any link if it was free, even if it was from a spammy scraper site or the lowest-quality directory you’ve ever seen. It’s the end of the month, and that means it’s time for another edition of Greg’s Soapbox! Except this time, it’s not so much me standing on the soapbox and ranting; I’m more standing near it and politely providing helpful advice. Almost two years ago, I wrote a post here about using Google phone support if you had issues with Google My Business (yes, I’m not linking to the post on purpose). Depending on your particular keyword phrase when you search, that post usually ranks anywhere from #2 to #5 for any variation of “Google My Business support” — and it’s always the highest-ranking non-Google result. The problem is, while phone support supposedly still exists, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to get to anymore. And, since it’s the highest ranking non-Google answer, a ton of messages come through every month from people who are pointing out that the method in the post doesn’t work anymore. Bing UK now displaying National Health Service data for GP & hospital search queries

According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), the publicly-funded national healthcare system has been working with Bing UK during the last year to improve search results for general practitioner and hospital queries. “Over the last year, we have collaborated with our friends at Bing to provide users with a comprehensive GP and hospital search experience,” reports a recent post on the NHS Choices blog. The NHS says that queries for “GP in [location]” on Bing UK will now surface a list of local options with information on specific locations, open times and user reviews – all data that has been pulled from the NHS. Links to AMP content are showing up outside of search results

The Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) standard was designed to bring the fast-loading, clean experience of native apps to the open web. With most large publishers now producing AMP versions of their content, distribution platforms and other referrers are starting to experiment with AMP as an alternative to standard outbound links and app web views. Publishers might see this trend in their AMP referral analytics. At Relay Media, we’ve tracked an increase in non-Google referrals to the AMP content we convert for publishers — beyond the usual traffic from users sharing AMP links on social media. Here are our top non-Google referral sources over the past five months: Google Analytics weekly sessions, October 9, 2016, through February 18, 2017 Google still represents about 80 percent of total AMP referral sessions to Relay Media’s platform, with another 8 percent categorized as “(direct) / (none)” in Google Analytics. Exoplanet discovery Google doodle salutes the 7 Earth-like planets found by NASA

Always the fan of space-travel and astronomy, Google wasted no time designing a doodle to acknowledge NASA’s discovery of seven Earth-like planets orbiting a single star 235 trillion miles from our own solar system. Named the TRAPPIST-1 solar system, Google shared NASA’s report that three of the seven planets are located in what scientists refer to as the habitable zone: “… the distance from the star it orbits where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water.” From the Google Doodle Blog: Though scientists have some serious studying to do before we can definitively say whether any of the new TRAPPIST-1 planets are habitable, the potential is very promising. Gboard adds new languages, voice typing, new emojis & doodles

Google has updated their iOS keyboard extension, Gboard to add 15 new languages, voice typing, new emojis and Google doodles. The new languages include Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Polish, Romanian, Swedish, Catalan, Hungarian, Malay, Russian, Latin American Spanish and Turkish. To add these languages to Gboard, go to “Languages” > “Add Language.” Voice typing was also added. Just press the microphone button and talk. It will then listen and type out what it hears you saying. This was one of the biggest missing features that consumers wanted on Gboard. Gboard now supports the latest emojis from iOS 10. Finally, Google added their doodles to the keyboard. After you type the G on the Gboard, you will be presented with today’s doodle. You can download Gboard for iOS free in the App store. A review of free PPC reporting solutions from Google

Doing PPC reporting right often involves some trade-offs between time and money. The perfect report takes a lot of time to build — time that could have been spent improving the performance of an account. A quick and repeatable report, on the other hand, is usually generated through a tool that costs money. Maile Ohye has left Google

The latest forward-facing Googler to leave the search team is Maile Ohye. She is best known for her talent for conveying complex technical topics in an understandable and actionable manner. She has produced dozens of Google webmaster videos, spoken at countless marketing and developer events and led many of the Google webmaster related initiatives, including many around the Google Search Console. Maile joined Google in September 2005 and has been there as a Developer Programs Tech Lead for almost 12 years. She was recently the face behind the video from Google on how to hire an SEO and has been a speaker at many of our SMX events. She has not stated why she has left the company, nor what her future plans are, but only said farewell on Google+ to some of her coworkers and the community. Updated Google My Business guidelines disallow virtual offices as service-area businesses

Google has recently updated the Google My Business guidelines to state that virtual offices are not considered service-area businesses and that you need to have the virtual office staffed during business hours. A new section was added under the “address” portion of the guidelines that reads: Service-area businesses — businesses that serve customers at their locations — should have one page for the central office or location and designate a service area from that point. Service-area businesses can’t list a “virtual” office unless that office is staffed during business hours. Some businesses, like pizzerias that have both have restaurant seating and deliver pizza to customers, are hybrid service-area businesses. These businesses can show their storefront address and designate a service area in Google My Business. If you serve customers at your address and want to set a service area, your business location should be staffed by your team and able to receive customers during its stated hours. Dos and don’ts of PPC advertising for universities

If you’re a marketing manager of a post-secondary education institution (or a PPC agency working on its behalf), then you already know that universities, colleges and similar organizations present specific challenges (and opportunities) for online advertisers. Over the years, my advertising agency has had the pleasure of working with a number of these institutions, and we’ve learned (sometimes the hard way!) some important lessons. Google says no algorithm changes in new deal to demote pirated content in UK search results

The UK Intellectual Property Office announced what they call a “landmark agreement” between Google and Microsoft Bing for “reducing the visibility of infringing content” in the UK search results by June 1, 2017. But Google tells Search Engine Land that they are “changing nothing today as a result of the announcement/code of conduct.” Google already has a Pirate algorithm that is in place to deal with DMCA complaints and other forms of pirated content in the search results. So when we heard this announcement, we asked Google if they are changing this algorithm or putting a new one in place. Google explained that the “Voluntary Code of Practice” that was agreed to here will test to make sure the measures both Google and Bing are taking are successful in keeping bad content out of search results. Google seems to already believe that their algorithms are indeed doing a good job keeping such content out of their search results. There likely Search Engine Land Source

Google temporarily disables ‘not mobile-friendly’ label in search results due to bug

Kashin / Shutterstock.com Google has confirmed that they have temporarily disabled the ‘not mobile-friendly’ label in the mobile search results due to a bug. John Mueller of Google said that Google has turned “the label off for now” but it “should be ok soon.” This is in response to Google mislabeling pages as not mobile-friendly over the past 24- hours in the mobile search results. Even AMP pages were labeled as not being mobile-friendly. John Mueller said that “this is a bug on our side” and Google is working on fixing it. Google brings back emojis in the search results snippets for relevant queries

Google has confirmed with Search Engine Land that they have brought the ability for emojis to be displayed in the search results listing page. In June 2015, Google removed emojis from showing up in the results after promising to disable them over webmaster abuse. Well, I guess Google had a change of heart and wants them to show up for queries related to emojis. A Google spokesperson told us they added it back when emojis are relevant. “We have added a feature to our snippets to feature emojis where relevant, useful and fun,” Google told us. “You’ll see them crop up across various snippets moving forward,” Google said. So if you search in Google for emojis, Google will show emojis. For example, my query for [google display emojis] has search results that display emojis in the listings: But if I search for [google panda], our [panda page] is listed, but even though the title tag has a panda emoji, it doesn’t show Search Engine Land Source

Google iOS app gets new local search filters, more AMP support & Gboard access

With the new version 23.0, Google has added more local search filters like “Top Rated” and “Open Now” to the app, and the the ability to turn on Gboard within the app — the Google keyboard designed first for iOS devices and then Android, that makes it possible to search and send information, GIFs and emojis. Google is also adding more support for AMP (accelerated mobile pages) to the app. From the update announcement on iTunes: “More webpages will now load instantly. When it comes down to it, the hardest part of SEO for most small businesses is building links and authority. Keyword research, on-page optimization, local SEO — it’s all doable, and to some degree mechanical. But raising your authority? Not so much. While the importance of links is clear, Google’s messaging is confusing and unhelpful. We are told to “make sure other sites link to yours” while at the same time “avoiding link building as it can do more harm than good.” So, what’s a small business to do? In this article, I am going to take a quick look at why links influence results and then outline a simple link-building strategy. Google is showing multiple ad extension types in a single swipeable carousel

Now, it appears to be testing a version that combines multiple ad extension types into one swipeable card carousel. Spotted by Jason Normoyle of Resolution Media this week, the mobile text ad shown below takes up significant screenshare with a carousel of ad extensions followed by a call extension and two location extensions. Here’s a composite of the screenshots Normoyle provided showing that the carousel includes cards for sitelinks, seller ratings, callouts and structured snippets. Users can swipe through to see multiple extension formats. Google is constantly experimenting with extensions and the ways they display in ad,s and we don’t know how widespread this experiment is. Missed link-building opportunities: Reclaiming broken links

It’s inevitable. Despite your best efforts to prevent them, there will likely be some 404 errors showing up on your website for old pages that have been discontinued on your site. Or perhaps someone just inadvertently mistyped the URL they were linking to on your website. Certainly, 404 errors aren’t great for search engine indexing, but they also represent potential inbound links that are now broken and lost. Or can those links be reclaimed? I have two techniques you might want to try. Reclaiming broken links with Google Search Console Google Search Console is free, making it a popular choice for attaining link information about a website. However, as Russ Jones, principal search scientist at Moz, wrote in a thought-provoking post about the true reliability of Google Search Console data, much of the data in Google Search Console, especially around linking, isn’t always terribly accurate. Google: No comment on possibility of a Feb. 7 algorithm update

Last Tuesday, Feb. 7, there seems to have been a Google algorithm change that adjusted how many sites rank — both for good and bad. I’ve been tracking the update since Feb. 8, and over time, more and more webmasters and SEOs have been taking notice of the ranking changes at Google. This seems to be unrelated to the unconfirmed link algorithm change from earlier in February. This new update seems to be more related to Panda, based on such things as content and site quality, versus link factors. Google has not confirmed the update and would not comment on what webmasters and SEOs have been noticing over the past week in the search results. So we cannot confirm if this was a content quality shift, link quality change or something else. But what we can say is that webmasters and SEOs are very busy noticing these ranking changes, through looking at ranking reports or their traffic from Google Search Engine Land Source

Google has made a change to the featured snippets where often, right after the featured snippets are displayed in the search results it is followed by the people also ask box. This started happening yesterday and it can be found for many of the queries that trigger a featured snippet. It does not show for all but it does show for many. Here are two screen shots of how it looks with the people also ask directly after the featured snippets: Here is an example of a featured snippet that currently doesn’t have the people also ask feature after it: It is unclear if this change is a new search feature or a bug with the search results. Google’s ‘people also ask’ search feature officially gains dynamic loading

Since then, Google tested showing more of these query expanders as the user clicked on them. That dynamic loading “people also ask” feature is now officially live in both the desktop and mobile Google search results. What is a pangolin? Google Valentine’s Day doodle series & pangolin game come to desktop

Google is using this Valentine’s Day to show its love for the pangolin, an endangered animal whose natural habitat stretches across Asia and Africa. According to Google, the animal is not only the world’s only scaly mammal, it is also the world’s most trafficked mammal. To raise awareness around the threat these animals face from poachers and smugglers, the site has created different versions of its Valentine’s Day Doodle game. In each, a pangolin makes its way across various terrains like Ghana, India and China — collecting cocoa beans, musical notes and, today, ribbons. Google’s Valentine’s Day doodle series began over the weekend when the site launched the first of its doodles, but only on mobile. Since Saturday, Google has used its doodle to promote different types of pangolins — today’s featured species is the Chinese pangolin. Google is celebrating Valentine’s Day early on mobile this weekend, posting the first of its Valentine’s Day doodle series on its mobile homepage (but not desktop). The doodle is an animated image of a pangolin – the world’s only scaly mammal – holding a giant heart that launches a mobile game. The game has players leading the animated pangolin across the Ghana landscape collecting cocoa beans to make a dessert for his sweetheart. At the end of the game, players can share it on social networks or click a heart icon that displays facts about the pangolin. The search icon at the close of the game leads to a search for “What is a pangolin?” According to the Google Doodle Blog, pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world. “All eight species face a signnificant threat from poachers and smugglers,” reports Google about the animal that is native to Asia and Africa. Florida court: Google permitted to delist sites regarded as spam under First Amendment

Under US law it’s well established that the First Amendment of the US Constitution gives search engines near-total discretion over the content on their pages and ranking algorithms. However, a court in Florida previously allowed a case against Google to survive a motion to dismiss (plaintiff’s links were removed as “pure spam” in violation of Google’s quality guidelines). The case, e-ventures Worldwide, LLC vs. Google, survived Google’s procedural motion. Among other factual claims, the complaint against Google alleged a kind of conspiracy that the search engine sought to use delisting as a tool to force plaintiff to buy AdWords. Google was sued under various federal and Florida state statutes, basically for unfair competition. The failure to grant Google’s motion to dismiss was legally in error. However, the Florida court has now granted Google’s motion for summary judgment, effectively ending the litigation in Google’s favor. Pinterest hires head of Google senior image search engineer Randy Keller

In its early days Pinterest was described as a “social scrapbooking” or photo sharing site. CEO Ben Silbermann has called it a “catalog of ideas.” But the company has generally shunned the “social network” label. Whatever it is, Pinterest is increasingly becoming an image search engine. Earlier today the company announced the hiring of Randy Keller, who until last month was a senior engineer with Google image search. Bing rolled out two new updates for weather-related queries today – adding a new look and feel to its weather search results and offering snow conditions and forecasts for U.S. ski resort searches. The site has refreshed its entire “weather experience” so that weather searches for specific cities will return real-time forecasts and an interactive slider that shows the weather condition for certain times of the day, set against an image of the city’s landscape. Data: Google monthly search volume dwarfs rivals because of mobile advantage

In the past year, comScore has de-emphasized its search market share and mobile market share reports. Part of the reason is that the numbers don’t change that much anymore. In addition, for reasons that remain mysterious, the measurement firm has declined to present a consolidated view of the search marketplace that includes both desktop and mobile. Mobile search is now both larger and, in many respects, more important than desktop search. Below are the most recent comScore PC search market share and query volume figures for December 2016: Across the board, desktop search queries are down vs. November. Google’s overall share remains basically stable at 63 percent (plus). Microsoft continues its slow growth on the PC, while the others continue their slow declines. It’s worth noting again that Bing powers search results for AOL, Yahoo, Siri + Spotlight search and Amazon, which is not reflected above. On mobile devices it’s mostly a story about Google, however. Google Data Studio now connects to Search Console

Google’s reporting and data visualization tool, Data Studio, now integrates with Google Search Console. Search Console joins AdWords and Google Analytics among others as a data source for report building. Marketers can build reports that include only Search Console data, or combine it with other sources to compare paid versus organic traffic trends, for example. Search Console metrics can be aggregated by either site or by page in the Data Source creation flow within Google Data Studio by selecting either “Site Impression” or “URL Impression”. As of last week, users can build an unlimited number of reports in Google Data Studio. The email used for the Data Studio account needs to have access to Search Console in order to use it as a data source. The history of search engines, search and SEO (search engine optimization) from 90s to present For more on the history of SEO and to learn about SEO, check out my blog: http://ift.tt/LYBWep In this tutorial I talk about the history of search engines, Google, the search industry, and SEO (search engine optimization) from the 90s to the present. During the early days of the web, Google didn’t exist. Other search engines were dominant. Google emerged around late 1990s. Google’s algorithm was significantly better than the other search engines because it used a new algorithm for ranking websites. That algorithm was to count the number and quality of links pointing to a site, and use that information as a crowdsourced way to determine which sites were good and which sites were less good. A little later in the history of SEO, many entrepreneurs realized that getting traffic from Google was great, and began manipulating which links were pointing to their sites in an effort to artificially manipulate search results. During the early 2000s, blogging emerged because many people were realizing that if you simply create a website that discussed some topics, Google would likely rank your site for the associated searches and bring you traffic. Later in SEO history as website owners became savvy about how to manipulate search results, Google had to become more savvy about how to determine who was manipulating search results. Google created a number of very harsh penalties for sites that manipulated search results at scale. In the early 2000s, Google had two main competitors. Yahoo search and Bing search. They were thought of as threats. But looking back at the history of SEO and the search industry, they were never really threats because Google improved much more rapidly than them, and has beaten Yahoo and Bing by a wide margin. Bing rejected 130M ads in 2016, including 17M tech support scam ads

Bing Ads released its report on actions it took to keep malicious and misleading ads and advertisers off the search results in 2016. Its systems rejected 130 million ads (fewer than the 250 million were rejected in 2015) and banned 175,000 advertisers (more than the 150,000 banned the prior year). Phishing ads, ads promoting tech support scams and counterfiet goods continued to be areas in which Bing continued to battle bad actors. More than 7,000 sites were blocked for potential phishing attacks, and a million ads were blocked for hocking counterfeit items. Bing Ads banned third-party tech support advertisers altogether last year after finding it difficult to weed out the good from the bad. Its systems blocked more than 17 million tech support scam ads in 2016. As promised, Google is making a change to how it displays Accelerated Mobile Pages, so that users can easily view and share links that lead directly to publishers’ sites rather than to Google’s copy of the content. Google has been displaying AMP content by effectively making a copy of it and rendering it from its own servers, something that Google says makes AMP both faster and more secure for users. However, this has raised concerns with publishers and some users, who have found the system difficult for reaching content directly on a publisher’s site. When should advertisers consider pausing Google Local Inventory Ads?

In response to the growing popularity of searches with local intent, Google released Local Inventory Ads (LIA) a few years ago as a variation of Product Listing Ads (PLA) that include information on when a product is available at a nearby store location. Taking into account the local intent of each search query in determining when LIAs should be featured, Google can serve these units in a similar format to traditional PLAs, as well as in other LIA-specific formats, such as beneath a Google Maps display. These units are steadily becoming an important part of paid search campaigns for brands with brick-and-mortar locations, and LIA traffic increased 60 percent Y/Y in Q3 2016 for the median Merkle retailer. Report: Releasing Super Bowl ads early jump-starts lifts in brand search

It’s no secret that most Super Bowl advertisers see a surge in search volume on and immediately following game day. What is not so well known is how much of a bump advertisers can gain by releasing their ads, or ad teasers, as is increasingly common this year, ahead of Super Bowl Sunday. Technology company Quancast pulled some data for Search Engine Land to help answer that question. A look at five brands that have released their ads online ahead of Super Bowl LI shows the impact can vary widely, but all five saw a lift in brand searches in the days after release. CPG brands Snickers and Budweiser saw by far the biggest jumps in brand search volume. Snickers has garnered attention for its four teaser ads in which the brand touts it will film the first live commercial, starring Adam Driver, during the game. Google local knowledge panel testing promotion box

Google seems to be testing a new box in the local knowledge box panel that allows Google My Business owners to post deals and promotions below their core listing. This was spotted by Mike Blumenthal and you can see it yourself for a search on [theme park collection orlando fl]. Here is a screen shot that shows “latest from the owner” followed by a message about saving 10 percent, then with a “learn more” button that takes the searcher to driving directions on Google Maps. This looks similar to the Google Posts feature Google launched a while back, but I doubt this is the same platform.
