Insights from our 2017 holiday retail survey

By most accounts, the holiday shopping season was an e-commerce success, with final tallies beating analyst estimates. Earlier this month, we asked e-commerce teams about their holiday marketing strategies — planning, budgeting and expectations — and what they did differently this year from last year. Nearly 100 respondents shared their feedback. The majority (57 percent) of respondents worked in-house, while 43 percent were at agencies. The client/company size represented skewed to the smaller end, with 60 percent of respondents working with companies with annual revenues below $25 million. Nearly 13 percent represented companies with annual revenues over $500 million. There were several interesting findings from the survey. Here are some of the highlights from the final results. Holiday budgets rose across most platforms Overall, search and social budgets increased this holiday season over the previous year, with 70 percent of respondents saying they increased budgets on both channels. Display retargeting budgets for more than half of respondents (56 percent) also increased Search Engine Land Source

Side by side: Comparing two performance marketing tools/agencies

As performance marketers, we’re conditioned to want to test everything. From the impact of feed titles to the incrementality of each channel, we want to be sure that we’re making the right choice before we commit all our resources to something. That goes for deciding which tools/agency to use as well. Moving your performance marketing activities from one tool/agency to another (or picking one to start with) is a big commitment and not one you should take lightly. Most (probably all) tools/ agencies claim to do the same basic thing: improve your campaign performance. The way they do this or the methods they use will differ, but with so much choice out there, how are you to know which one will actually deliver? To help them make the right decision, many companies will ask for a side-by-side comparison test between two tools/agencies. We were recently asked to participate in a split comparison test against a Philadelphia-based product ad technology for Search Engine Land Source

Apple says HomePod is finally coming on February 9, but can it compete?

Having missed the holiday shopping cycle, Apple is finally releasing its HomePod smart speaker on February 9. It will initially be available in the US, the UK and Australia and later “this spring” in France and Germany. With its higher price ($349) and late entrance, Apple is definitely an underdog versus Amazon and Google. There’s evidence that more than 40 million smart speaker units are already in US homes, the majority of which are Amazon Alexa devices. However, there are roughly 125 million households in the US, so the market is far from saturated, and there’s some indication of demand for HomePod. Many of the devices sold, however, have been at the low end of the market (Google Home Mini and Amazon Echo Dot). Apple has no such lower-end offering and has positioned its HomePod as a premium speaker, competing with Sonos (which has a version with Alexa). The company is also using HomePod to promote Apple Music. Unlike Google Home

How AI can uncover new insights and drive SEO performance

In 2015, Google announced that it had added RankBrain to its algorithm, cementing the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in search. Fast-forward to 2018, and search marketers are starting to use AI, machine learning and deep learning systems to uncover new insights, automate labor-intensive tasks and provide a whole new level of personalization to guide website visitors through their purchase funnel. We have now fully entered the AI revolution. For clarity and for context within this article, I find the following definitions helpful: Artificial intelligence is a broad field, covering a range of machine applications to carry out tasks that typically require human intelligence. Human intelligence encompasses a broad range of behaviors, so it should be no surprise that the umbrella term “artificial intelligence” can be used to categorize natural language processing, chess playing, driverless cars and millions of examples in between. Machine learning is often conflated with AI, but it is actually an application (and therefore a subfield) of artificial intelligence. In Search Engine Land Source

Searchmetrics wins important victory in patent infringement lawsuit

An important ruling was issued last Friday in the 4-year old patent infringement lawsuit that SEO platform BrightEdge filed against competitor Searchmetrics. The California federal court judge sided with defendant Searchmetrics, ending a long and expensive court battle. At issue in the federal case were five patents Brightedge claimed were being infringed upon by competitive SEO platform Searchmetrics. Searchmetrics successfully argued that the patents owned by Brightedge were both abstract and broad and thus did not offer an “inventive concept” that satisfied precedent (Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank Internationl, 2014) which ruled that abstract ideas are not patentable under Section 101 of the Patent Act — unless the claim contains an “inventive concept” that sufficiently transforms the idea into an application that then becomes patent-eligible. In his ruling the judge agreed, invalidating the five patents owned by Brightedge. The plaintiffs had requested that a sixth patent be amended to the suit but the judge denied this request as Search Engine Land Source

New Google Search Console may be rolling out for everyone now

We expected it to roll out shortly, and now it has. To see it yourself, go to http://ift.tt/2xhWJ8l, and at the top right, you should be able to click on the “search properties” button to see your verified sites in the new beta. You will still be able to access the old and current Google Search Console with a link at the bottom left of the interface. Google plans on continuing to port more features from the old version to the new one and improve existing features while adding new features over time. Postscript: It appears that some Search Console users are still unable to see all their properties in the new beta, but it does seem most users do see most of their properties now. The unique selling proposition: A key element for SEO success

Google processes trillions of searches per year, which equates to billions of searches each day. How do they decide what is the most promising result for every single one of that staggering volume of questions? Experience shows that you don’t have to be a huge website for a major brand to rank in the top spot for a given query. Google doesn’t care which sites show up high in SERPs, as long as the page lives up to user expectations, which is something they measure on a tremendous scale. That begs the question: What is it that makes a page stand out, as far as Google is concerned? Why do pages rank in Google in the long term? Ask why Google factors in hundred of signals when calculating a website’s ranking for queries in Google Search. These include everything from site speed to inbound links to page content. Above all, however, Google seems to favor sites that are popular with users. Search Engine Land Source

Study: 80% of Google Home results come from snippets

Digital agency ROAST has released a Voice Search Ranking Report (registration required), which seeks to categorize and understand how Google processes and responds to voice queries. It also tries to determine when Google Home uses featured snippets/Answer Box results and when it does not. The company used keyword analytics to compile a list of “616 key phrases in the UK featuring snippet answer boxes.” It then determined the top phrases by query volume across a range of verticals (e.g., medical, retail, travel, finance). The tests were run in November and compared Google Home and traditional search results. The study sought to answer the following questions: How many of the key phrases were answered [on Google Home]? Do the answers given match the answer boxes’ results? Which key phrases prompt Google not to user answer boxes? Can we compare visibility on voice search to answer boxes? Is there a difference? In the majority of cases, the Google Home result mirrored the snippet/Answer Box, according to the Search Engine Land Source

FAQs on new Google Speed Update: AMP pages, Search Console notifications & desktop only pages

Google has just announced its latest algorithm update, named the Speed Update, that will be launching in July of this year. We asked Google several questions about this update, including how this impacts desktop pages, whether pages with AMP URLs but slow canonical URLs will be impacted, if webmasters will get Search Console notifications and more. Here are the questions and answers from a Google spokesperson: 1. Are you still going to be using the desktop speed factor for the desktop index? Correct, no changes to announce for desktop. 2. With the mobile-first index, will desktop rankings use mobile page speed and not use desktop page speed? No, this change is about the mobile search results. As mentioned in our mobile-first indexing blog post, while our index will be built from mobile documents, we’re going to continue to build a great search experience for all users, whether they come from mobile or desktop devices. 3. What about the sites that get the “unavailable” Search Engine Land Source

Survey: Smart speaker ownership steals time from smartphones, TV, radio

In a follow-up to mid-2017 research on US smart speaker ownership, NPR and Edison Research have released new findings indicating that nearly 40 million Americans now own the devices. That number is roughly double what it was in July 2017 and shows the impact of 2017 holiday sales on the market. The new survey was conducted in two parts, online and by telephone, in November and then in late December. It reflects that satisfaction with these devices is high, and people are using them more frequently and gradually expanding the use cases. Another striking finding is that smart speaker ownership is impacting (read: decreasing) usage of other media and devices. As one might expect, smart speakers tend to be placed in the living room and then the kitchen. Other research found that smart speaker ownership triggered smart home appliance and fixture purchases. In the NPR survey, a significant percentage (31 percent) of owners reported that they had “controlled household devices with

Understanding AdWords keyword match types for manufacturers

In a previous column, I addressed the challenges paid search advertising can present to industrial manufacturers who sell capabilities versus stock products. Another challenge is the AdWords help files themselves. As an advertising platform, AdWords is geared more to retailers — when a platform uses common retail products to illustrate keyword strategies, it’s often hard to see how the example relates to keywords for complex manufacturing capabilities. For example, under Basic Tips for Building a Keyword List, AdWords uses the example of men’s shoes: If you’re a manufacturer offering a capability or products manufactured to engineers’ specifications for use in unique applications, it can be tough to come up with multiple basic categories if you’re thinking in terms of clothing items. “Well,” you might think, “we make precision machined parts,” or, “we electropolish stainless steel parts. I can’t think of another category.” This confusion then carries over into keyword match type. “If you sell hats,” says one of the help files,

Google to fix reverse image search bug

Google has confirmed it is working on a fix for a bug that is affecting reverse image search, which can be used to find related images, sites using an image and other sizes of an image. Because of the bug, first reported on Thursday, the section of those search results that typically show “Pages that include matching images” no longer display the thumbnails of matching images or their dimensions. Danny Sullivan, Google’s public liaison for search, confirmed the reverse image search bug on Twitter Saturday. Sullivan added that a fix is in progress and that it could “take up to a week for the fix to fully roll out to everyone.” This is what you should see in the “Pages that include matching images” section of reverse image search results: This is how that section appears — without the thumbnail images and images dimensions — as a result of the bug. Again, this should be resolved within a week, according to Google. The post Google to fix Search Engine Land Source

Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2018 Google doodle honors Dr. King & his dream for a better world

Google is marking Martin Luther King Day with a doodle designed by the guest artist, Cannaday Chapman. According to Chapman, his image of a young girl on her father’s shoulders listening to Dr. King speak is meant to evoke Dr. King’s dream of creating a better world for all children. “It may appear that this movement or any civil rights movement was brought about by one person, but it’s the people that have the power to bring change,” says Chapman whose artwork highlights Dr. King’s audience versus depicting an image of the civil rights champion. Leading to a search for “Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2018,” the doodle was created in collaboration with the Black Googlers Network, an internal employee group focused on on empowering Google’s black community. Chapman says he wants his artwork on Google’s homepage to inspire people to reflect on this moment in history. “I would like people to remember that current events and Search Engine Land Source

SEO Consultation – Follow Along As We Optimize A Content Marketing Campaign For The Search Engines Does your website not deliver as many visits from Google as you like? Properly optimizing your content for the search engines is key… In this video, you can follow along as I coach a friend on how to implement SEO best practices for his website and niche. Before I get into the extended description, here are a list of the resources used and mentioned from the live video on SEO. For the keyword tool, go here: http://ift.tt/2mzFPdF For a video that covers the basics of SEO, go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nu5lo2_WC1c For the previous consultation focused on Keyword Research for another friend, go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_FfdjNOgpQ&list=PL0sOKzn__yK2dufOveT6OWr-3mMdNAIYL When you are ready to start creating optimized content for the search engines, this video reveals my SEO hack to create great search optimized content fast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDl16D71riQ For the YouTube SEO video, go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffkxuvFAE2k Previous feedback from my keyword research video where I analyzed a friends website and did a keyword research session for him was great. Many comments stated that you got a lot of value hearing me go deep in one real world niche versus using hypotheticals. So in this video,, we do just that… My friend Billy Elusive’s site has been stagnant in the search engines for years. He used to be on aggressive content publishing schedule, but is not receiving the results he once enjoyed. This is because Google has changed the game on search engine optimization many times over the years. Publishing 500 word articles every day is no longer enough… Google wants to see in-depth posts linked to other relevant in-depth posts all positioning your website as the authority on a specific topic. How do you do that? Great question… The first step is to come up with the different main categories that your content falls under. Using the keyword research tool you can find out which ones of these have the highest potential search volume and lowest competition. Once you’ve identified the first main area you want to build an SEO silo within, you then do more research for the long tail keyword phrases around that topic. Once you find the main tear to keywords, you can begin to look at the specific post topics in the tier 3 keyword phrases. When you publish your content the tier 3 content links up to the tier 2 content…. And the tier 2 content links up to the top tier content for your main keyword phrase. When you build out your content marketing strategy in this way you’re able to leverage your own sites authority plus the authority from social media while giving Google hyper-targeted content pieces that are incredibly relevant to your users’ needs… All increasing the likelihood of top Google rankings. This method also allows you to focus on the longtail keywords first. You can find the low hanging fruit phrases, dominate those, then build your authority while driving traffic from day one. […]

Zhou Youguang Google doodle honors Chinese linguist known as the ‘Father of Pinyin’

Today’s Google doodle pays homage to the Chinese linguist Zhou Youguang on what would have been his 112th birthday. Youguang helped create the Chinese phonetic alphabet called Pinyin. He spent three years developing the system of ‘spelled sounds’ that led to the international standard for Romanized Chinese — earning Youguang the title, “Father of Pinyin.” “The new system transformed China’s literacy rate, providing more natural passage into the written language, which requires mastering thousands of characters,” writes Google on the Google Doodle blog, “It bridged multiple Chinese dialects with its shared designations of sound. Today, schoolchildren learn Pinyin before characters, and it is often used to input characters on smartphones and computers.” Google says without Youguang’s efforts, phonetic translations of the Chinese language would have never have existed, “The world would still be referring to Beijing as Peking, and to Chongqing as Chungking.” The animated doodle highlights Youguang’s work by flipping the Os within Google’s name from Pinyin (Gǔgē) Search Engine Land Source

Google My Business video uploads now available to business owners

Allyson Wright from the Google My Business team announced today that the video upload feature we saw being tested is now available for business owners in the Google My Business dashboard. Business owners can “view videos added by customers and upload videos about their business for customers to view,” she said. The video maximum length is 30 seconds, and after a video is uploaded, it can take up to 24 hours for it to be visible on the business listing in Google Maps or the local web search results. Merchants should soon have the ability to flag inappropriate videos through their dashboard, and Google also promises mobile support in the future. To add video to your business, go to the Google My Business dashboard and click on the “photos,” then select the “video” link at the top. 7 Free Tools to Rank #1 on Google | SEO Optimization Techniques to Skyrocket Your Rankings You want to rank number one on Google. How do you do it?►►Subscribe here to learn more of my secret SEO tips: https://goo.gl/ScRTwc Find me on Facebook: http://ift.tt/2313ZvR Read more on my blog: http://ift.tt/2ytuIas Most people say you need to build links. Most people say you need to do on page SEO. But where do you start? Hey everyone, I’m Neil Patel, and today I’m going to share seven free tools that will help you rank number one on Google. Tip #1: Quick Sprout Analyzer. Quick Sprout’s a free tool, go to quicksprout.com, put in your URL, it’s a gamified SEO application, and it’ll break down the problems, and will walk you through how to fix them step by step. If you’re not putting in the right keywords in your title tag or your description or your alt image tags, Quick Sprout will tell you, and Quick Sprout can publish them all for you. This will help with SEO optimization and google ranking. #2: Yoast SEO plugin. It’s one of my favorite tools. With the Yoast SEO plugin, every time you publish a blog post, it’ll give you a score and tell you, hey, here’s how you can optimize every single one of your blog posts to get the maximum amount of traffic. #3: Google Search Console. With Google Search Console every time you publish a new blog post or a page, you have an XML site map. The XML site map is created by the Yoast Plugin which you then submit to Search Console. Search Console shows you how many impressions you’re getting, how many clicks you’re getting, which pages are popular, and it even shows you which keywords are getting a lot of impressions for, but not a lot of clicks. You can then go and optimize your content by adding those keywords in, adjusting your title tag, your meta description to include those keywords, and maximize your click-through rate and boost your google ranking. #4: Google Trends. Google Trends shows you brand queries. That way you’ll know which brands are more popular and what people are searching for. Take the car industry for example. There’s General Motors, and BMW. They both have millions of dollars to spend on SEO. They both have millions of back links. How does Google know which to rank higher? One of the factors within Google is brand queries and Google Trends will show you that BMW is searched far more than General Motors. So what’s Google going to do? They’re going to rank the more popular car manufacturer ahead of the other. #5: websiteresponsivetest.com More people are using Google on their mobile or tablet devices than they are on their desktop or laptops. You want to make sure your website is responsive, and people on mobile devices can load your website extremely fast, and using this free tool, it’ll show you how other websites and mobile […]

Smart speaker sales grew 103% last year

The latest in a growing number of studies on voice search and virtual assistants, Adobe Digital Insights (ADI), found that sales of “voice assistants” (let’s assume that’s smart speakers) grew roughly 103 percent in Q4 vs. a year ago. Most of these sales (79 percent) took place in the fourth quarter (lots of gifts). Data from ADI and other third-party analyst firms justify the assertion that smart speakers became the fastest-selling consumer technology last year, dramatically outpacing wearables and VR. ADI’s analysis is based on retail sales data and a survey of more than 1,000 US consumers. According to the study, more than 50 percent of consumers who own smart speakers use them at least daily, with 22 percent saying they also shop using voice commands. YouTube SEO 101

Based on Alexa traffic rankings, YouTube is the second most visited site on the web, right after Google. Unfortunately, a lot of digital marketers still treat it like any other social media site. But success on YouTube isn’t about posting content, it’s about optimizing your content — just like your website. It’s easy to find videos with millions of views and videos with almost none that are basically the same. The difference between success and failure often boils down to a few elements. When it comes to YouTube SEO, a lot of the optimization work can be encapsulated into a process that you can apply to all your old videos and then to each video as you publish it. And you’re about to learn that process. Here’s what you need to know if you want your content to rank number one on YouTube for the keywords you care about. 5 content distribution strategies for 2018

I personally feel that the most overused digital marketing phrase is “Content is king.” Yes, content is important. Google loves quality content. Your visitors love content. But writing content for the sake of writing content simply makes no sense. If your marketing department has a mandate that you must write x number of blog posts per month, you need to change direction — and here’s why. On WordPress alone, 86.4 million blog posts are published every month. That’s a lot of content! Sadly, most of the content that’s posted is not well written and will never see the light of day — much less the first page of Google’s search results. Simply put, there are only a few spots on the first page of Google, and the chances of each of your blog posts making it on the coveted first page of Google for the keywords you’re targeting are slim to none. This is especially true for brands that have Search Engine Land Source

Split testing Google Shopping campaigns

Many retailers and marketers want to review the performance of their Google Shopping campaigns with split testing, whether it’s to establish if a tool will offer more efficiency than manual implementation or to compare two tools against each other. However, the Google Shopping channel lends itself to accurate split testing only under certain conditions, and otherwise, the risk is very high that the results will be misleading or false. That said, there are a few split-testing methods that can give insights into your Google Shopping efforts. This white paper from Smarter Ecommerce will help you answer questions like these: Which types of split testing are there for Google Shopping? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each test? How can I be sure that my split test will give valid, meaningful results? Which tests provide reliable, objective conclusions? Google removes addiction treatment ads from UK search results

Google has removed search ads related to addiction treatment in the UK, following an investigation by The Sunday Times (registration required). The investigation revealed an ongoing issue with middlemen bidding on the terms and receiving large kickbacks from the private centers where the searchers are ultimately referred to, in a practice called “patient brokering.” The companies frequently masquerade as impartial help lines without disclosing their business model to the searchers that encounter them. The move to remove them from UK results follows an earlier change in the US. Google began removing ads from addiction treatment-related query results in the US starting in September of last year. The practice of patient brokering is illegal in several states in the US, but it is not illegal in the UK. Critics of the practice cite this as one of the reasons for the increased cost of care, pointing out the high commissions paid out to the referral agents have to come from somewhere. Google accidentally removes news publishers from Google News

Google has accidentally removed a number of news publishers from Google News over the past few days. Many news publishers were found complaining in the Google News forums. Google has confirmed with Search Engine Land that this was accidental. We do expect those publishers to be reinstated into Google News by the end of the day. Maricia Scott, engineering director Google News, told us: We apologize for the issue that resulted in a number of sites being delisted from Google News. This was an unintentional technical issue and not something we did manually. We are working hard to identify the sites that were incorrectly affected and will get them back in as soon as we possibly can. You can check if your news site is included in Google News by conducting a site command in Google News or searching for recent story headlines in Google News. You can also check your index status in the Google News Publisher Center. If you no Search Engine Land Source

10 facts about rich results that all SEOs should know

As of December 19, 2017, “rich results” is the new name for all of Google’s special search result features and enhancements, including rich snippets, rich cards and enriched results. As a marketer, those terms probably aren’t new to you. They’re intended to make search results stand out by incorporating additional information in the form of pictures, review stars and so forth. Below, I’ll cover everything you need to know about rich results going into 2018. 1. Structured data is generally used to obtain rich results Structured data is coded within your page markup and is used to provide information about a page and its content. In addition to helping Google better understand your page content, structured data is also used to enable rich results. Although not all structured data leads to a rich result, marking up content with schema.org structured data (commonly called “schema markup”) can certainly improve your chances of obtaining a rich result in SERPs. Certain kinds of schema markup, such as Search Engine Land Source

Google says Assistant now on more than 400 million devices

Google said in a blog post this morning, “The [Google] Assistant is now available on more than 400 million devices.” When Google says “devices” it’s including Android smartphones, tablets, TVs, headphones . . . and Google Home smart speakers. What we don’t get from the post is how many Google Home, Mini and Max speakers were sold in 2017. Four hundred million is a massive number but it’s going to be mostly Android smartphones. If Google were really psyched about the Home figures it would have called them out specifically. We can make a crude estimate of how many Google Home devices there are in US households. Based on a review of data from NPR, Strategy Analytics and Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, it appears that Google Home has roughly a 25 percent share of the US smart speaker market. Specifically, Strategy Analytics estimated that Google’s share of Q4 smart speaker sales was 24 percent. Walker Sands (“Future of Retail 2017“), Search Engine Land Source

How to reverse-engineer your online advertising strategy

Online advertising experts love to talk about the importance of matching your landing page content to your ads. And you’ll get no argument from me — it’s a great way to improve the performance of your online advertising. I mean, it just makes sense. People click on your ad because the messaging resonates with them. If you have the same messaging on your landing page, that should resonate with these users and cause them to convert, right? As great as this approach is, the success or failure of a “match your landing page to your ads” approach to advertising rides on one critically important assumption: that you’re using the right ad messaging. Unfortunately, if your landing page strategy is based on your advertising strategy, there’s no easy way to test this assumption. You are fundamentally limited by your ability to predict what messaging will work for your target audience. If you’re way off-base, there’s no real way to know. But what if Search Engine Land Source

How much will privacy regulation disrupt the local search market in 2018?

Most marketing professionals don’t give much thought to the regulatory climate. In the US, unlike Europe, privacy laws are largely industry-specific and targeted toward healthcare and financial services. Thus, marketers have largely been able to rely on lawyers to provide privacy disclosures and then go on to business as usual. Yet there are a number of indications that a tipping point may be near, giving way to new regulations that demand significant changes in business practice. These changes can have a disproportionate impact on small and medium-sized local businesses. And varying standards across state lines means that companies with local operations in different states may have to make multiple adjustments. Below, I take a look at the current environment and indicators that major changes are due in 2018. Then I cover seven ways changing privacy laws will impact the local search market. Report: Google exploring sale of Zagat reviews

According to a report appearing in Reuters, Google’s parent Alphabet is considering a sale of reviews publication Zagat. The company was purchased in September, 2011 for a reported $151 million in the wake of a failed deal to acquire Yelp. At the time Google needed local reviews content to better compete in local search with rivals such as Yelp, TripAdvisor and others. Marissa Mayer was responsible for the acquisition. Less than a year later Mayer became Yahoo’s CEO. The Reuters report says, “Google has held informal talks in recent months with multiple companies about offloading Zagat . . . Any deal would likely involve the Zagat brand name and website . . .” Whether the sale will actually happen and any potential purchase price are uncertain. If Zagat did sell it almost certainly would fetch less than what Google paid for it. Its brand has undoubtedly declined in value during the nearly seven years Google has owned and managed it.
