Is Google testing its own jobs search engine?

Google seems to be testing a new search feature. This one is designed to help searchers find new job openings. Dan Shure spotted this test for queries on Google that include [jobs online], [data entry jobs online], [newbury street jobs] and so on. Google shows job listings and takes you into what appears to be their very own job search portal to drill down deeper. Here are some screen shots of the job search results in the core web results: After you click on “more jobs,” it takes you into this jobs-specific search results interface that gives you additional filters for job categories, titles, dates, types, state, city, company type and employer. The interface looks a little bit like the local results interface, with the listings down the left-hand side and results in the middle. This story is developing, and we will update it as we have more information from Google. As we wrote earlier today, Google performed 9,800 live Search Engine Land Source

What is SEO and How Does Search Engine Optimization work?

What is SEO and How Does Search Engine Optimization work? Today 94% of consumers and businesses search the internet before buying a new product or service. They submit their keywords for search and in return get a list of relevant websites. People tend to visit the websites that are at the top of these lists because they appear more relevant to their search. Most businesses find their competitors at the top of those lists. Studies show if your website is not at the top of these lists, you’ll never reach your customers online. If you have ever wondered why your competitors rank is better than yours than know its because of a technique called SEO. SEO means search engine optimization. This technique helps your site rank higher than the millions of other sites in response to certain keywords when searched. The search engines system collects information about every page on the web and can help people find exactly what they are looking for. When your page gets higher rankings it helps more people find you. To get higher rankings your website must get all the right ingredients that search engines are looking for. This is where SEO can help. Search engines look for text, content, links, page titles and other pieces of relevant information contained in the html code of your website. This is why when someone searches for books, the search engine will narrow the results to show the pages that contain the words searched for. To get more business your website must be on the first page of all the major search engines for the specific keywords that are relevant to your potential customers. Without SEO your site will never be found online by your customers. In today’s competitive world you need solid SEO techniques to get your site to the top of the search results. For apps, there are distinct ranking factors. Although they are similar to ranking factors for a standard web page, there are differences that you need to know about. Here’s how you can optimize your app to get the best possible rank. Yes, you need to optimize According to a recent Google report, 27 percent of users find apps through a search engine. That’s up from 2 percent to 3 percent in 2014. That trend will likely continue. Why? Because Google is emphasizing app downloads from search results while brushing aside Google Play as a search engine. Google has also become better at ranking apps, a trend we can expect to continue. Even though 40 percent of people still find apps by searching in an app store as of now, it’s still a great idea to plan for the future Search Engine Land Source

Separate marketing technology fact from fiction at MarTech Conference in 2 weeks

We’re two weeks away from the MarTech Conference in San Francisco, May 9-11 — the world’s largest independent marketing technology conference designed for senior-level marketers and technologists. I stress the the word independent because unlike most of the big marketing events these days that are run by Adobe, HubSpot, IBM, Marketo, Oracle, Salesforce, or alliances of smaller vendors, MarTech is produced by Third Door Media with no conflict of interest. Those other events are fantastic — but they’re inherently and intentionally biased. With MarTech, there’s no pay-for-play or hidden agenda in the editorial program and no rules excluding who can exhibit. There is only one goal: to illuminate successful real-world practices at the intersection of marketing, technology, and management — no matter which software products or analyst frameworks are employed. This independence lets us ruthlessly call out fact from fiction in examining today’s rapidly evolving marketing technology environment. For instance: Fiction: The marketing technology landscape is consolidating. Fact: It isn’t — but that’s actually a good thing, and we’ll explain why, as we give you Search Engine Land Source

2017 SEM growth hacks: Monster growth from brand protection

Today’s article presents one of the more powerful search growth attack strategies for 2017: PPC (pay per click) brand protection. This article is the first in my eight-part series presenting SEM marketers with the most effective growth hacks for 2017. As CEO of the ad monitoring company, The Search Monitor, I see the ads, campaign strategies and performance results from agency and brand clients. In this series, I will use this data to present the best growth hacks for 2017. Why does brand protection matter? An ongoing and serious problem threatening your SEM revenue is competition from affiliates and competitors bidding on your valuable, high-converting branded keywords. The result of the increased number of advertisers competing against you is obvious: higher CPCs (costs per click), lower clicks and a lower click-through rate (CTR). We estimate that each competitor with ads running on your brand or brand-plus keyword terms costs you a 10 percent loss in clicks and a 20 percent increase in Search Engine Land Source

Support of Review Extensions Thankfully, the new version of Bing Ads Editor supports Review Extensions and will be a godsend for paid search managers everywhere. The upgrade will allow for managing of the third-party reviews, along with implementing shared Review Extensions that can be added to multiple campaigns and ad groups. Reviews will now be able to be easily copied/pasted, edited or associated between accounts. Advertisers will also be able to see columns within Ads Editor that show the associated campaigns and ad groups to help with insight and troubleshooting. Apple expanding successful Search Ads to three new English-speaking markets

Apple launched app-store Search Ads in October 2016. Since that time they’ve received praise from developers as a high-converting, high-value app discovery tool. Today the company is announcing that Search Ads will become available in the UK, Australia and NZ. The booking UI opens today and ad serving begins on April 25. Developers running campaigns in the US will be able to clone their ads for the new markets. AppsFlyer issued the following assessment about Search Ads’ performance in a report issued earlier this year: [Apple had] the best retention in iOS North America, while proving their ability to scale with the third highest number of installs of non-gaming apps. With the strongest debut index performance we have seen to date, Apple came in #3 in the Power Ranking in question. Beyond strong retention metrics, Apple said that, on average, its Search Ads are seeing conversion rates of greater than 50 percent, meaning that half the time a user clicks an Search Engine Land Source

New Google Earth delivers guided tours, 3D images & an ‘I’m feeling lucky’ feature

Google launched a new Google Earth for the web and on Android today, complete with interactive guided tours, 3D images and a new “I’m feeling lucky” feature. For its newest version of Google Earth, Google partnered with storytellers, scientists and nonprofit organizations to create Voyager, a showcase of interactive guided tours. Right now, the site has more than 50 tours via Voyager, and Google says it is adding more on a weekly basis. The announcement on the Google Earth Blog listed a sampling of the tours currently available: Start with Natural Treasures from BBC Earth, and journey to six habitats — from islands to mountains to jungles — and learn about the unique and thrilling wildlife in each. Then head to Gombe National Park in Tanzania and hear from Jane Goodall about her team’s chimpanzee research and conservation efforts. The 8 time- & money-saving SEO tools I pay for (& 17 more I use for free)

In a recent interview with SEO and Credo founder John Doherty on Dan Shure’s excellent Experts on the Wire podcast, he mentioned the positive response he’d gotten to a post he’d done this summer on the SEO Tools he uses. He mentioned that it seemed like a pretty simple post idea, but it made sense to me that it would get traction, because John is a smart writer and marketer. As I listened, I was curious what tools he was using, and I took a look at the post. I’ve also taken a page from his playbook in the following column. I like comprehensive lists of things as much as the next guy, but in a space where tools and software are relatively fragmented, and the applications for those tools change rapidly, it’s especially helpful when experienced practitioners give you a peek at different tools they pay for, what they use them for and how they think about those Search Engine Land Source

Are AdWords advertisers about to get a lot more Quality Score reporting metrics?

Quality Score reporting in the AdWords interface leaves much to be desired. Only the current Quality Score is available, and granular details are contained in individual pop-ups that make analysis cumbersome. That could be changing. Avner Pinchover shared a blog post on the Israel version of the Inside AdWords blog with Search Engine Land that describes a series of new columns of Quality Score metrics coming to the AdWords UI. It was posted back on March 10 and seems to have received little attention. It was removed for some reason yesterday. (The archive can be found here.) It’s not clear if it was posted in any other markets. We’ve reached out to Google to ask why it was pulled and will update here if and when we receive any answers. That said, I am willing to bet we will see these updates in the near future. The date in one of the image files indicates this post has been in the works since Search Engine Land Source

1,000 ways to redirect

If there’s one issue that strikes dread into the hearts of SEO practitioners more than any other, it’s redirects. It’s no surprise, really. After all, there are so many ways to do redirects — and the rules change depending on where they are put in and the different systems in place. What is a redirect? A redirect uses one of many methods to forward from one URL to another and supports canonicalization of signals (such as links) to the correct page. Forwarding users is usually one of the main considerations for redirects, but as SEOs, we also need to be conscious of the signals being passed. Redirects are one tool for consolidating signals like links and passing them from one page to another. I know people have varying opinions on how long redirects should be in place, and many use the formula of “no traffic through the link in x amount of time” as a guideline to delete redirects. But I’ve said it before, Search Engine Land Source

4 mistakes to avoid during a website audit

As all SEO experts know, ranking in the search engines is a notoriously unpredictable pursuit. Each update can result in a strong, unforeseeable impact. The days of ranking by simply adding keywords to your title tags, header tags and content to get a few backlinks are over. The harsh truth is that a great many businesses struggle to keep up with the changes. There are a lot of factors that the search engines take into account when determining your standing. Some of the big ones are: content quality authority responsiveness website speed Knowing how exactly to improve upon these is a lot easier said than done. Therefore, there will always be a need to perform a quality audit. Keep in mind that an in-depth audit is not a task you can do in a couple of hours. At SMX West a few weeks ago, I was a panelist for the session, “How to Find, Hack, and Build Great Scripts.” I found one of the scripts presented by my co-panelists so interesting I decided it might be worth sharing with everyone here. This script helps identify low-quality videos on YouTube that are monetized using your video ads. Specifically, it finds videos that have a high ratio of dislikes to likes, indicating it may be content that you’d rather not associate with your brand. This script uses Google’s newest addition to AdWords Scripts — support for video campaigns — along with one of the advanced APIs for pulling YouTube statistics to solve the problem. Just released: 2017 Local Search Ranking Factors survey results

At the risk of oversimplifying what it takes to rank in local search results in 2017, links and reviews are hot. That’s one of the many conclusions drawn by more than three dozen local SEOs who have come together in the 2017 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, just published today. This is the latest in the long-running survey that David Mihm began almost a decade ago. The survey went on hiatus in 2016, then Mihm handed it over to Darren Shaw. While reviews and links are considered more important now, citations appear to be losing importance in the survey. Still important? Yes. But as Shaw explains in his post introducing the survey, “the emphasis on citations has seen some decline (certainly in favor of links), and rightly so. In particular, there is an increasing focus on quality over quantity.” The survey breaks down what those local SEOs believe are the most important ranking factors for both local packs and localized Search Engine Land Source

Mary Pickford Google doodle marks 125th birthday of the ‘Queen of Movies’

Today’s Google doodle honors film star Mary Pickford on what would have been the actress’ 125th birthday. While best known as a leading actress during the silent film era, Pickford was also a director and producer. She co-founded the United Artists film studio, and was an original member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Her long list of accomplishments earned her the title “Queen of the Movies.” From the Google doodle blog: She appeared in as many as 50 films per year, and eventually negotiated wages that were equal to half of each of her films’ profits. She went on to demand full creative and financial control of her films, a feat still unheard of to this day. In addition to her work in film, Google says Pickford sold Liberty Bonds during World War I. She used her connections to create the Motion Picture Relief Fund and is credited with revolutionizing the film industry by creating options for Search Engine Land Source

Siri is Google’s nearest mobile search competitor [Report]

A new study from Fivesight Research, “US Consumer Search Preferences Smartphone & Desktop: Q1 2017,” finds that Siri is the mobile “search engine” of choice after Google. The study was based on a survey of 800 US adults split roughly evenly between iOS and Android users. Google was by far the dominant mobile search engine, with an 84 percent aggregate share among respondents. Among Android users, Google’s search share was 90 percent. Among iPhone owners Google had a 78 percent share. After Google, however, Siri was named by more respondents as their “primary search engine” than Bing or Yahoo. (However, this doesn’t reflect query volume, just identification as the primary engine of choice.) Siri was the primary search engine of 13 percent of iPhone owners. This finding is significant because it suggests the long-term, potentially disruptive impact of voice and virtual assistants on traditional “query in a box” results. It’s important to point out, however, that these responses reflect Search Engine Land Source

Why the future is all about PASO — personal assistant search optimization

Personal assistants (PAs) aren’t just digital assistants that can be used to perform routine tasks. They’re also the future of SEO. Consider two of the most popular PAs: Siri and Google Assistant. People often use those assistants to retrieve information. And where do you think those PAs get that information from? Somewhere on the web. Here’s what you need to know about how PAs will shape the future of SEO, and why I’m calling this a new category, personal assistant search optimization (PASO). They’re on smartphones Personal digital assistants are great because they’re portable. The reason they’re portable is that they’re on smartphones (though they can also be in home devices, computers and any device connected to the “Internet of Things”). Siri, of course, has been part of the iOS smartphone platform for several years now. Likewise, Google Assistant is available on the Allo app, Google Pixel and other Android phones and Android Wear. Portable PAs give people the ability to use their assistants, hands-free, to Search Engine Land Source

SMX West: Solving SEO Issues in Google’s Post-Update World

How do we deal with huge and sudden changes in organic search traffic now that Google no longer posts major updates to its algorithms? Since many updates that formerly would have been assigned a name (like Penguin or Panda), or even a name and an incremental number (Panda 3.0) are now part of Google’s core algorithm, how can we know when an update is responsible for a traffic or ranking change? And even if we do know, what can we do with that knowledge? Kristine Schachinger and Glenn Gabe answered those questions and more in “Solving SEO Issues In Google’s Post-Update World,” a session at SMX West 2017. The following is a summary of their presentations. Busting Google’s black box Presenter: Kristine Schachinger, @schachin Some SEOs and webmasters may find themselves wishing for the days of Matt Cutts. The problem with obsessive rank tracking

Keyword ranking is one of the most overrated and misused metrics in SEO. Yes, tracking your positions is important, but placing too much emphasis on this metric is problematic. When it comes to SEO, what you measure gets managed. That means that focusing on the right metrics will help you generate results that have a business impact, rather than an ego boost. So, let’s talk about the problem with obsessing over rank — and what metrics you’d be better off focusing on. The problem with rank tracking Measuring keyword ranking is easy to get sucked into because it’s so visible. When you type in the all-powerful keyword and see your listing there at the top, it feels good. The problem with putting too much emphasis on this metric is that the search results aren’t always consistent. Google’s results will vary based on a number of different criteria. Let’s look at the two most common. Location. Your search results are tailored to the location from which you are searching. This Search Engine Land Source

Google testing ‘tags’ label in search results snippets

Google has confirmed to Search Engine Land that they are experimenting with a new feature in the search results. I happened to stumble upon a search results snippet in Google that showed “tags” within the snippet. The unusual part of this was that the “tags” didn’t offer any additional functionality. Google would list “tags” relevant to the page content in the actual search results listing snippets. You were not able to filter by those tags, click on them or anything. It just listed “tags” in the snippets without showing you anything more. Here is a screen shot: Google confirmed this was a real experiment but would not explain what they are for and how they should work.
