Voice search and SEO: Why B2B marketers need to pay attention now

Voice search is commonly discussed in the context of local and B2C SEO, but it’s being used for more than just getting directions to nearby restaurants or hearing the next step in a recipe while cooking. Voice search is being adopted for a variety of purposes, and its influence on B2B decision-makers is growing as well. By looking at who’s using voice search, why they’re using it, and where they’re using it, it becomes very clear that the impact of voice search on B2B SEO is inevitable. Adoption of the technology is on the rise, so it’s time for brands to begin optimizing for voice search. Who’s using voice technology? As early as 2014, 55 percent of teens and 41 percent of adults were already using voice technology daily. Adults use it to dictate texts, illustrating a desire to avoid typing on small devices. Teens use it to get help with homework, demonstrating an early adoption of voice technology for Search Engine Land Source

Canada’s Supreme Court orders Google to de-index site globally, opening door to censorship

The Canadian Supreme Court has ordered Google to de-index an e-commerce site globally. This sets a disastrous precedent that opens the door for other governments (and private parties) across the globe to try to control or censor Google’s search results. The case was Google Inc. v. Equustek Solutions. The plaintiff, a small tech company in British Columbia, sued its former distributor, which was selling allegedly counterfeit versions of its products online. An initial injunction against the defendant failed to stop the behavior. The present case against Google went up on appeal, and the Supreme Court granted a worldwide injunction against Google: In this case, the balance of convenience favoured granting an injunction. The Court of Appeal agreed that the court held jurisdiction over Google with respect to the injunction application. It also concluded that it was permissible to seek interim relief against a non-party. The power to grant injunctions is presumptively unlimited, and injunctions aimed at maintaining order need not be directed solely Search Engine Land Source

The value of an in-house SEO

Over the last decade, SEO has morphed into a complex field encroaching on UX, content marketing, and even web development. At the same time, a wide range of organizations are now running full force on to the web; yet they often fail to consider the possibility of bringing an SEO specialist in-house. Based on conversations with colleagues, it really comes down to the fact that organizations lack commitment from the C-suite and/or proper resources to find the right candidate. One then must beg the question: Is it worth bringing someone in? I decided to reach out to several SEO leaders in the industry to get their points of view, while closely examining my past experience. I have had the privilege over the last decade to primarily work as an in-house SEO manager for several e-commerce organizations. Even early on in my career, I recognized the value of SEO to the entire organization — from a merchant researching products to onboard, to a content Search Engine Land Source

Google My Business website builder SEO review

Google officially launched its Website Builder within Google My Business in an effort to help small businesses easily and affordably create websites. This is a great initiative, as there are many small businesses that do not have a website. Google’s Marissa Nordahl made the announcement it in a Google My Business Help thread on Tuesday, June 13. Here is what she wrote: One of the most common actions people take when exploring a Google listing is to go to the website, but we know that getting a website can still be a challenge for a lot of small business owners around the world: too complex, too expensive, too time consuming. Millions of small businesses (60% of small businesses globally) don’t yet have a website. Website is a free tool that allows small business owners to create a simple, striking website in just a few minutes. Google News gets a cleaner look, new features to make it ‘more accessible’

It’s difficult to believe that Google News is 15 years old. In that time, it has been through a number of feature changes and minor redesigns. The last major redesign was in 2010, but today it’s getting another one. The idea is to add feature and content depth but also simplify the layout and navigation. I spoke with Anand Paka, the Google News product manager. He said the redesign intends to connect users with more quality journalism and to make Google News more accessible to everyone and less of a power user product. By the same token, Paka told me that Google News is adding “more facts, perspectives and context.” So, in addition to being simpler to use, it has more depth. The Google-provided screen shot above shows a side-by-side comparison of the old and new layouts. The former layout (left) is very link-dense. The new layout (right) is easier to scan visually. It also offers cleaner navigation and is more personalized. Google is also making video more prominent throughout. The top of Search Engine Land Source

EU slaps Google with $2.7 billion antitrust fine

Expected for months, the antitrust penalty was supposed to be closer to $1 billion. However, today the EU leveled a much larger 2.4 billion euro ($2.7 billion) fine against Google for alleged abuse of its market power in vertical (shopping) search. Though the fine is not a surprise, the amount is. In the climax of a decade-long antitrust saga that at one time was close to settlement, Google is being punished for allegedly “favoring its own content” in shopping search results. Google has vehemently denied that its practices harm competition or consumers. Instead, Google has argued that its results are beneficial and match evolving consumer demands: Google has always worked to improve its services, creating new ways to provide better answers and show more useful ads. We’ve taken seriously the concerns in the European Commission’s Statement of Objections (SO) that our innovations are anti-competitive. The response we filed today shows why we believe those allegations are incorrect, and why we believe that Google increases choice for European Search Engine Land Source

What does it mean to win a Search Engine Land Award?

When we decided to launch our search marketing industry awards program three years ago, the guiding principle was have the honors be truly meaningful. That’s why it’s no small task to enter the competition- we ask for a lot of supporting data and information so our editorial staff and industry judges can effectively measure outstanding results and reward innovation in search marketing. Year after year, we’ve seen the level of competition rise, and fully expect 2017 to showcase some amazing examples of successful search marketers. And for many finalists, there really is satisfaction in being added to the short list, and we agree – it’s incredibly difficult to name just one winner in every category. While earning a finalist title would have been enough after a win the previous year, Katy Tonkin of Point It was pleasantly surprised to take home a trophy in 2016 for an enterprise SEM campaign they ran for Microsoft Store. We were up against some impressive brands: AARP, Catalyst for Search Engine Land Source

Pinterest’s Lens update adds a Snapchat-style look and a fashion sense

Pinterest wants to do for visual search what Google has done for text search. But to do that, Pinterest needs to make searching by taking a picture as easy as typing on a keyboard. So the search-slash-social platform continues to tweak its three-month-old in-app visual search tool, Lens. Pinterest’s latest updates to Lens, announced on Wednesday, make the image-scanning feature easier to handle and handier for fashion. For starters, Pinterest is updating the look of Lens. Of course that means it’s becoming more Snapchatty. When people open Lens by tapping the camera icon on the search page in Pinterest’s app, they will be shown a full-screen viewfinder a la Snapchat’s main screen. And like Snapchat’s camera screen, Lens’s new screen sports a capture button at the bottom for people to snap a photo for the visual search tool to scan. Google adds a fidget spinner to its basket of Easter eggs

Not that anyone needed another distraction online, Google has now added an interactive fidget spinner to its basket of Easter eggs. Reported today on Search Engine Journal, Google mobile and desktop searches for “spinner” will result in a digital spinner atop search results. (A search for “fidget spinner” doesn’t work — as that search term is dominated by Google Shopping campaigns, of course.) The interactive screen has a toggle in the top right corner to switch between the latest pop culture fidget toy phenomena and a number spinner, which was spotted by a reader back in January. Much like my kid’s constant begging to buy him one, Google’s fidget spinner doesn’t stop once you click the “spin” button. More clicks only change its pace and direction. Reviews & other UGC more influential for consumers than search engines & ads [Study]

It’s well-established that ratings and reviews are widely consulted and have a significant impact on consumer purchase decisions. A new study from TurnTo affirms this and provides some additional color and nuance for the discussion. Called “Hearing the Voice of the Consumer” and conducted by Ipsos, the study involved 1,070 US consumers who had bought something online in the past 12 months. User-generated content (UGC) is defined here to include ratings, reviews, photos, videos, social posts and Q&A participation. The most common forms were reviews and ratings, however, with 71 percent and 69 percent of survey respondents saying they’ve submitted those types of UGC. Online ratings and reviews are a form of word of mouth, which is the most trusted source consumers consult before buying. Indeed, 90 percent of survey respondents said UGC had at least some influence over their online purchases. Roughly 53 percent rated it “extremely influential” or “very influential,” a higher percentage than for any other category. After UGC, search engines had the greatest influence over purchases. Google’s job listings search is now open to all job search sites & developers

It’s now official: Job listings are coming to Google’s search results in a much more prominent way. And the company is now offering a formal path for outsiders to add job listings to the new feature in Google search. Google announced this morning that they are now opening up job listings within Google search to all developers and site owners. The new jobs display within Google search doesn’t have a formal name. However, it’s part of the overall Google for Jobs initiative that Google previewed last month at the Google I/O conference. At that time, Google did not say how to get your job listings into this feature. Well, now Google has published a guide to job posting structured data that gives clear advice on what developers need to do to get their job listings into this new Google for Jobs search feature. There are two basic steps you need to take: (1) Mark up your job listings with job posting structured data. (2) Search Engine Land Source

Pay Per Click (PPC) versus Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Pay Per Click (PPC) versus Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Contact Olympia SEO, a Seattle SEO agency, at: https://olympiaseo.com Here is a typical dilemma facing most of practicing Internet marketers – SEO or PPC, which should you prioritize? There are quite a number of Internet marketing professionals who look at PPC as a complete waste of precious dollars while others seem to look at SEO with disdain if not downright contempt. Pay-Per-Click marketing is sometimes seen as a love-hate application by Internet marketers. For those who swear to the immense benefits that it provides and praise it to high heavens, PPC is seen as their ticket to high impact visitors and profitability levels that can hit the ceiling. It provides the opportunity for business to become prominent in the market and attract the attention of target customers. This instant exposure also affords you the opportunity to receive timely feedback from your target audience/clients. This added capability of Internet-based market development tracking allows you to “reconfigure” your marketing thrusts and priorities to better respond to the buying behavior of your intended clients. On the other hand, for those who consider themselves falling under the “hate” crowd, the bids are unbelievably high and are always overwhelmed by doubt about the real count of clicks that are pure fakes. Just like with the PPC, SEO marketing has its fair share of followers and non-believers. Those who support SEO marketing always look at the “free” aspect and the potential profit margin that can be had which, at times, can go over the roof. All these great things that can happen as a direct result of SEO marketing are manifested once the marketing strategy starts turning in more visitors to your site at a sustained or increasing rate. Those who question the wisdom of using SEO to boost online sales performance always anchor their argument on the general sentiment that this online marketing strategy is a total waste of time. One of the major downsides of SEO is the longer turnaround time. Quick results is the norm in marketing, and some market experts can’t seem to reconcile the inexplicable fixation on SEO in the face of the uncertainty and longer response time that are associated to it. If you go the SEO way, then you must dig deep in your trenches as you may have to wait for as long as 12 months before you can see any movement in your ranking in search engine results. Going back to our original concern about which is better between the two, we have to remember that the arguments and views that are being propounded by both sides are all accurate. However, both sides agree that both are indispensable tools when it comes to Internet marketing. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: “SEO This Week Episode 38 – LinkedIn Liars, PPC Gold, Happy Clients” -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Father’s Day 2017 Google Doodle brings back the cactus family from Mother’s Day

To celebrate Father’s Day, today’s Google doodle revisits artwork from this year’s May 14th Mother’s Day doodle — only this, time it’s the cactus family’s dad taking care of his baby cacti. Google’s Father’s Day doodle includes five panels, the first with only the father-figure cactus standing tall. Other images depict the dad-cactus doing his child’s hair, blowing a balloon back and forth, giving the kids a bath, and showing them how to shave. The doodle leads to a search for “Father’s Day 2017” and includes the usual sharing icon. Currently, it’s being displayed on Google’s U.S. homepage, in addition to a number of its international pages, including the UK, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, the Netherlands, India, Japan and more. In case you missed it, here’s Google’s Mother’s Day doodle to compare: Some of the hardest working dads I know are part of the Search Engine Land team, and I couldn’t be more proud to be their colleague. Susan La Flesche Picotte Google doodle pays homage to 1st American Indian to earn her medical degree

Today’s Google doodle honors Dr. Susan La Flesch Picotte on what would have been her 152nd birthday. Born on this date on the Omaha reservation in Nebraska in 1865, Picotte was encouraged by her father “to be somebody in the world.” According to Google, she did just that, leaving the reservation to attend the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. From the Google Doodle Blog: She graduated at the top of her class. Despite receiving numerous prestigious job offers, Picotte chose to return to the reservation to provide the medical care that her tribe badly needed – tending to patients across 1,350 square miles on foot and horseback, in wind, snow, and rain. Earning the affectionate moniker “Dr. Sue,” Picotte was not only a physician, but an advocate for public health practices and social reform. “Most notably, in 1913,” writes Google, “She personally raised the funds to build a modern hospital in her hometown.” The hospital Picotte founded is featured in the doodle image Search Engine Land Source

SEO: The missing piece in brand protection

Let’s face it — if you have worked in the industry for a while, you are aware that a stigma has existed around SEO for years. In addition to putting your site at risk for a manual penalty, questionable SEO practices can tarnish a brand’s reputation. Those of us who have properly applied SEO principles and committed to protecting our brands have gotten a bad rap due to others that have misapplied SEO for their clients or companies. Running an enterprise SEO program for an established brand requires that one acknowledge the stigma and place a focus on changing perception. Changing perception requires action, not words. Simply educating the company on the value of SEO, or how SEO can be applied responsibly, is not enough. Strategy alignment, allocation of assigned resources, and a full demonstration of defending and enhancing the brand is critical. Setting up and testing AMP for WordPress: A quick 7-step guide

In today’s mobile-centric world, having pages that load quickly is essential for satisfying the user. Not only that, but the effects of slow page speed have been correlated to a decease in overall revenue and an increase in page abandonment. Users have come to expect mobile sites to load just as quickly as their desktop counterparts. In fact, Amazon, one of the largest online retailers, concluded that even a one-second lag in page load speed accounted for a $1.6B decrease in annual revenue. Accelerated mobile pages (AMPs) are quickly becoming the standard for how a fast-loading page should be built. Using a pre-render, AMPs are able to load 15-80 percent faster than standard mobile pages without compromising functionality. While the ease of AMP implementation will vary depending on your CMS (content management system), WordPress can be a good test environment for previewing what your AMP page might look like. Follow this quick seven-step guide to enable AMP for WordPress. Note: Parts of this guide assume that you have activated the Yoast Search Engine Land Source

Dear Google: 4 suggestions for fixing your massive problem with fake reviews

Rather than outlining all the issues and turning this post into a huge rant, I wanted to offer some suggestions that I think would help solve some of the major issues we are seeing in the Local SEO world. 1. Please offer business owners a better path to reporting fake reviews Currently, there are several ways to contact Google My Business (GMB) support: phone support, email support, Twitter and Facebook. But there’s no way to get anyone at GMB to look at reports from people on businesses that aren’t theirs. That means if Joe the Plumber’s competitor in his town is a massive spammer and is ranking everywhere on Google, Joe can’t contact GMB about it at all. Bing Ads piloting in-market & custom audience targeting

In-market and customer match audience targeting capabilities are coming to Bing Ads. Pilots for both features were announced Tuesday by Bing Ads General Manager Steve Sirich during a keynote conversation at SMX Advanced in Seattle. In-market: The in-market audience pilot is running in the US only. In building in-market audience lists, Microsoft considers user purchase intent signals from Bing, MSN and other Microsoft properties. There are currently 14 in-market audiences, with more to come. Advertisers can add in-market lists at the ad group level and apply bid adjustments. From the blog post: Say you’re a travel site looking to target searchers who are ready to book a summer vacation. Bing Ads looks for people who are clicking on ads related to hotels and flights, searching for relevant vacation terms, or checking out hotel reviews, for example, and predicts whether these users are ready to buy. That advertiser could then target the Travel & Tourism/Accommodations list. Custom audiences: The custom audience pilot is global. The caveat is that Search Engine Land Source

The role of traditional public relations in SEO

If you’re doing search engine optimization (SEO) properly today, then a significant portion of your effort will overlap with traditional public relations (PR). This is because over the last few years, Google has minimized the effects of easily gameable ranking signals and refined their algorithm to better represent user experience. In other words, websites that satisfy their users tend to rank better than those that do not. Inbound links are still a critical component of any SEO campaign, but the easy link-building tactics of the past have been wiped off the board, largely thanks to Google’s Penguin update(s). This includes buying links, guest blogging at scale, embedding links in plugins or themes and more. The only type remaining as valuable and effective over the long term are the proverbial Holy Grail of link building: natural editorial links from high-traffic, authoritative websites. And therein lies the challenge: How do we earn these coveted editorial links? Well, it’s a two-part equation. The first part Search Engine Land Source

How to solve the mystery of what your customers really want

How well do you really know your customers? If your company is like most brands, you already realize that you don’t really know them at all. In fact, a 2015 study from Aberdeen Group found that just 4 percent of organizations are fully satisfied with their ability to ensure data-driven conversations with their customers. That’s a shockingly small number. And it’s also a huge problem, especially in today’s customer-first culture. Data-driven insights are the key to increasing customer satisfaction. If you don’t know your buyers, how can you really help them? That disconnect can very quickly translate into reduced ROI and decreased revenue for your business. That’s why it’s so important to incorporate data and analytics into every activity designed to support the customer experience. It’s simple math: better customer interactions equal superior business results. So, if it’s so simple, why aren’t more companies doing it? What does it take to use analytics effectively, and how can you turn Search Engine Land Source

Google Posts for small businesses moves to Google My Business

Small businesses that are in the Google Posts program can still make use of the experimental service, but the location of that feature has shifted to within the Google My Business area. Google Posts is a feature that allows people and businesses to create content directly on Google which appears highly ranked in Google search results for their names. Google confirmed the move to Search Engine Land earlier this week, and @maulikpanchal tweeted an example of the new location: Google is testing new design for post in Google My Business page @rustybrick #Google #NewLook #ux #GoogleMyBusiness http://pic.twitter.com/V8i2ltAq5E — Maulik Panchal (@maulikpanchal) June 9, 2017 Although Google has been recently expanding Google Posts to more and more businesses, organizations and people, Google says it is still not open for businesses that weren’t already invited into the program. On Page SEO – 9 Actionable Techniques That Work

On Page SEO – 9 Actionable Techniques That Work Today you’re going to learn 9 of my favorite on-page SEO strategies. I probably don’t need to tell you that on-page SEO has changed a lot over the last few years. Today, Google is VERY sophisticated about how they evaluate a page’s content…which means that old school keyword optimization doesn’t work as well as it used to. Fortunately, there are still a bunch of techniques that you can use to rank high in Google. I cover all 9 of them in this video. Our first factor is to use short URLs. Industry studies show that pages with short URLs may have a slight edge in Google’s search results. You also want to include your keyword in your URLs. Next up, we have LSI keywords. These help Google understand the context of your page’s content. You also want to publish long content on your blog. Why? Longer content tends to rank better in Google. Don’t forget to optimize your title tag for CTR. In the video I show you two strategies that can help boost your click-through-rate. Also, add a few external links in each article. I reveal a study in this video that shows why external links are important. Don’t forget about internal linking. This is also important. Our second-to-last tip is to optimize your page (and website) for sitespeed. This is one of the few ranking factors that Google has confirmed that they use. Finally, include multimedia in your content. I’ve found that this helps boost user engagement –something that search engines directly measure. Voice search becomes voice action: A key talking point at SMX London

From combining search and social to leveraging moments that matter, last week’s attendees at SMX London gained a deeper understanding of the numerous ways they can optimize their search strategies. Described as the “ultimate survival guide to the dynamic and tumultuous world of search marketing,” SMX  — run by Search Engine Land’s parent, Third Door Media — is a conference series designed to highlight the reach and opportunities that can be achieved through search advertising and outline search’s position in the wider marketing mix. From my own perspective, one of the more enlightening sessions of the London event featured a presentation by Pete Campbell, founder and managing director of Kaizen, on the subject of voice search — a prominent theme given the ongoing battle of the AI assistants. Despite existing for half a decade — Siri has been around since 2011 — voice search has only recently surged in popularity, with over a quarter (27 percent) of US smartphone users now utilizing voice Search Engine Land Source

WSJ: How Siri went from virtual assistant market leader to laggard

Siri has gone from being a competitive differentiator for Apple to nearly its opposite, a product seen by many as falling behind its rivals. Regardless of the empirical truth, it’s the widely-held view among tech industry insiders who help shape popular opinion. An article in the The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) provides an extensive look at how Siri went from market leader to its position as perceived laggard. The article suggests internal cultural issues and employee departures have slowed improvement of the virtual assistant: In the years since [Siri was acquired], former Siri team members say, progress has been slowed by a failure to set ambitious goals, shifting strategies and a culture that prioritizes user privacy — making it difficult to personalize and improve the product. The project also has suffered from the departures of key team members, some of whom went to competitors. Apple bought Siri in 2010. It was initially a ground-breaking addition to the iPhone. The AdWords 2017 roadmap is loaded with artificial intelligence

Google recently shared their 2017 AdWords product roadmap at Google Marketing Next. Because the audience is primarily comprised of executives at big agencies and big brands, and Google is doing its best to get them excited about all their capabilities, the event sometimes skims over some of the details that matter to those of us managing accounts day-to-day. I’ll share my take on the announcements and what excited or frustrated me the most. Even though it’s now been five years since I left Google, all but one of the presenters are people I used to work with, and they were kind enough to invite me backstage to get a bit more detail than what was covered in the keynote. Wall Street Journal’s Google traffic drops 44% after pulling out of First Click Free

In February, The Wall Street Journal stopped participating in a program allowing Google visitors to bypass its paywall. The publication has now discovered, as was predicted, that it no longer gets as much traffic from Google. In an interview with Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal reported that its Google traffic plunged 44 percent after leaving the “First Click Free” program. First Click Free allows visitors from Google to access articles that are normally behind paywalls for free, when they click to them from Google’s search results. Many publishers participate in the program because they find the traffic and related ad-revenue offsets potential lost subscription revenue. When a publisher is not in the program, Google cannot fully index the articles it publishes. That means those articles are less likely to appear for a wider range of topics. That can hurt potential traffic from Google. In addition, such articles are also listed with a “subscription” designation next to them, which might put Search Engine Land Source
