Updating your SEM toolbox with new, shiny tools –- SMX East 2016

Ask any PPC manager how they do their job well, and, aside from their skill set, they’ll name the tools that give them the data they need and the time in their day to drive strategy. In this session from SMX East 2016: “Updating Your SEM Toolbox with New, Shiny Tools,” Moderator Matt Van Wagner of Find Me Faster was joined by speakers Brad Geddes (@bgTheory) of AdAlysis, Daniel Gilbert (@dangilbertppc) of Brainlabs and Sahil Jain (@sahilio) of AdStage to share what SEM tools they rely on, and what shiny new tools they are most excited about. Secrets of PPC productivity First up was Brad Geddes with the secrets of PPC productivity, and he contends that time management is the key to good PPC management. There are so many tools out there, he says, and success is often determined not by what you use but when you use them. Apple rolls out Search Ads for the App Store

After a beta period that began in June, Apple is now opening up Search Ads for the App Store to all publishers and developers. It’s currently available for the iPhone and iPad only in the US. While Apple will certainly make money from this program, the main rationale appears to be app discovery. Google has had search ads in the Play store for well over a year. Search Ads will be delineated with a blue background. Apple will generate the ad images and copy from the app metadata supplied by the publisher or developer, so there’s no ad copy per se. It appears there will only be one ad per search. Developers set a max daily budget and an overall campaign budget. Apple’s Search Ads use the familiar “second price auction” to set winning bid prices. Apple says that relevance and bid price will determine which ads show. (Developers will pay on a “cost per tap” basis.) Search Ads allow for Search Engine Land Source

Ladislao José Biro Google doodle honors the inventor of the ballpoint pen

Today’s Google doodle marks the 117th birthday of Ladislao José Bíro, the man responsible for the ballpoint pen. Working with his brother, Google says Bíro introduced the first ballpoint pen at the Budapest International Fair in 1931. Eight years later, he would receive a patent for his invention. He worked with his brother, György Bíro, a chemist, to develop a new type of pen made up of a ball that turned in a socket. As the ball turned, it picked up ink from a cartridge and rolled to deposit it on paper, much like a newsprint roller transfers an inked image to paper.Google Doodle Blog The logo leads to a search for “Ladislao José Bíro” and includes the usual sharing icon. Google also shared the initial sketches of the doodle on the Google Doodle Blog: Born into a Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary, Bíro worked as a journalist — which is where he would eventually get the idea to take the Search Engine Land Source

Google: AMP will override app deep links for the foreseeable future

At SMX East yesterday, Adam Greenberg, the Global Product Partnerships at Google gave a talk about AMP. He said during the question and answer time that AMP pages will override app deep links for the “foreseeable future.” Last week we covered how that when Google began rolling out AMP to the core mobile results that Google quietly added to their changelog that AMP pages will trump app deep links. In short that means when a user installed an app of a publisher, does a search on their mobile phone where the app resides, clicks on a link within the Google mobile results that could lead to the app opening up, instead, Google will show the AMP page – not the content within the app the user installed. Google made several large pushes with App Indexing throughout the years. These were incentives to get developers to add deep links and App Indexing to their apps. Apple now has public place pages — but what exactly are they for?

Apple is apparently now publishing public place pages for selected landmarks, according to a post on 9to5Mac. Below is an example (via Allan Miller): If you’ve got the latest MacOS update “Sierra” installed you can access these pages from the Safari toolbar. On “El Capitan” a smaller drop-down page without a URL shows up for similar kinds of queries. In all likelihood these URLs, which Andrew Shotland identified as “Apple Maps ID + Lat/Long + Name,” are intended for sharing, especially with users of non-Apple devices and platforms. They may also be for indexing on Google and Bing. Presumably these pages can and ultimately will be indexed. Currently they don’t show up in search results. Shotland said today in the Local Search Workshop in advance of SMX East that he thought these pages could rank well if they were indexed. The story in 9to5Mac characterized the pages as being for “landmarks and some points of interest.” In my mind it makes Search Engine Land Source

Google brings store visits to Google Display Network, debuts cross-device retargeting

Google is going all-in on location. From search (and now display ads) to store, Google is finding more ways to close the loop. That’s because, when store visits and offline impact are captured and factored back into return on ad spend, the value of that spend goes way up — from 2X to well over 10X according to Google data. The company has been testing and refining store visits measurement for the past two years. At its “GPS” ads conference in San Francisco earlier this summer, Google announced a dramatic expansion of store visits. It also trumpeted that notion that Google was now the “largest omni-channel measurement company in the world,” having tracked over 1 billion store visits globally over the past two years. Using a case study with Home Depot, earlier today Google introduced location extensions and store visits measurement for the Google Display Network: The ads that show your business address, Google Maps directions and photos. Instead, the product group field contains the full path, which makes it possible to make changes without a parent ID and easier to see parent product groups. Introduced in 2012, it has operated on a periodic basis. In other words, the Penguin filter would run and catch sites deemed spammy. Those sites would remain penalized even if they improved and changed until the next time the filter ran, which could take months. The last Penguin update, Penguin 3.0, happened on October 17, 2014. Any sites hit by it have waited nearly two years for the chance to be free. Those long delays are now to be a thing of the past, according to Google. New EU copyright rules: basic fairness or punitive media subsidy?

Years ago the internet effectively destroyed the once mighty business model of newspapers. It has also put considerable pressure on other traditional media and entertainment, which often argue their work is being pirated and distributed online without fair compensation. There can be little dispute that journalism is critical to democratic societies. However the question is what do about the business models of legacy media organizations. The recently proposed EU copyright directive has one answer — and it’s one that Google doesn’t like very much. Here’s what the European Commission says the proposed rules will accomplish: better choice and access to content online and across borders improved copyright rules on research, education and inclusion of disabled people a fairer and sustainable marketplace for creators, the creative industries and the press. One of the additional objectives of the new rules, which must be approved by the European Parliament, is to harmonize copyright laws across the EU. How to manage local listings for enterprise brands

When it comes to local listings management, there’s a direct correlation between the number of listings you manage and the amount of grumbling, cursing and general hand-wringing you do. It isn’t easy for enterprise brands to get their location data in order. Juggling the info for hundreds or thousands of locations can quickly become overwhelming. And it’s not uncommon for enterprise brands to feel like they’re playing SEO whack-a-mole, constantly beating down duplicate listings, inaccurate data and any local search changes that inevitably pop up from Google. Fortunately, there are steps enterprise brands can take to tame their unruly location data and prevent it from getting out of hand in the future. The unique challenges facing enterprise local listings management For enterprise brands just starting to get their location data in order, local listings problems can typically be boiled down into two categories: an overwhelming, baffling, disparate, inaccurate and outright maddening heap of location data; and human nature’s basic resistance to change. The immediate results of link building

In an April 2016 article on Moz by Kristina Kledzik, “How Long Does it Take for Link Building to Impact Rankings,” the author posits that new links take about 10 weeks to have an impact. Our findings show the exact opposite: High-end link building has an immediate and persistent positive impact. I’ll explain further and share our data here. Kledzik’s study was on a moderately large site with roughly 200K pages and focused on moderately difficult keyword rankings. She correctly points out that with a multiplicity of variables, it is extremely difficult to pinpoint the impact of any given ranking factor (such as a link). Our study was conducted entirely differently and, I think, gives a better picture of why, in our experience, the impact of links is immediate and persistent. Background on the study First, it is important to know that we work exclusively with the legal industry — which means we’re bringing high-end link building to small business websites — Search Engine Land Source

Is Google showing fewer image boxes in its search results?

Google would show an image box for typically anywhere from 35 percent to 20 percent of the queries they return — at least this is based on tracking tools from Moz and RankRanger — but that seems to have dropped significantly yesterday by half. Both Moz and RankRanger are showing about a 50-percent reduction in the frequency Google will show the image box in the web search results. The box looks like this on desktop web search results: Now, those boxes show up not as often, according to these tools. We did ask Google for a comment but have not yet heard back. We will update this story if we hear anything from them. Google bumps Expanded Text Ad deadline to January 31, 2017

Advertisers scrambling to figure out how to optimize expanded text ads and those that have procrastinated even getting started with them are apparently in good company and will be relieved to know Google has extended the transition period for expanded text ads. Google will continue to accept new traditional text ads through January 31, 2017, not October 26 as announced in July with the general release of the new ad format. After January 31, existing standard text ads will continue to run with expanded text ads, but advertisers will not be able to edit or create standard ads. With Tuesday’s announcement, Google also issued a set of suggested best practices for testing expanded text ads: Test multiple versions of your expanded text ads. Try different approaches with the new space your ads now have. Shoot for 3–5 new ads per ad group. Advertisers who test multiple creatives see better performance. Focus your testing on headlines. AdWords Campaign Experiments (aka ACE) to sunset in favor of Drafts & Experiments

Google will soon retire AdWords Campaign Experiments. All advertisers will be transitioned to the newer Drafts & Experiments tool for trialing proposed campaign changes, the company announced Monday. Drafts & Experiments arrived in AdWords in February for search campaigns and extended to display campaigns in August. Drafts is sort of like AdWords Editor in that it allows you to make multiple edits to a campaign without the changes going live until they are posted. From a draft, advertisers can run an experiment — designating a portion of the budget to the test — to see how the changes might impact performance. Advertisers will no longer be able to create new Campaign Experiments starting the week of October 17. Exiting active Campaign Experiments have until February 1, 2017, to run, after which unapplied changes will be removed. Tips for when and how to use Feed Rules in Google Merchant Center

With Google’s roll out of the new Merchant Center interface came more functionality for Feed Rules. Feed Rules debuted earlier this year to allow marketers to make some changes to their product feed data right within Merchant Center. But what can you really do with Feed Rules and who should be using them? The consensus is that Feed Rules are still best for simple updates, and it’s ideal to make changes to the actual feed. In reality, however, that’s not always possible or timely and why Feed Rules have such appeal. Maggie Webb, Partner at Five Mill Inc., says that while most fixes and feed updates require editing by a feed service or developer, Feed Rules can offer a fix in the interim and be a big help to smaller businesses that don’t have resources at the ready to make updates. “Since a high percentage of ecommerce traffic is from Google Shopping, even a simple change from a Feed Rule can make a big impact on an account,” says Search Engine Land Source

Bing improves autocomplete suggestions for academic paper & movie title queries

Today, Bing announced improvements to its autocomplete technology for queries associated with academic papers and movies. According to the announcement, Bing originally launched its new autocomplete features around academic paper queries earlier this year. Using technology designed by Microsoft’s Cognitive Services and Academic Search team, Bing’s new autocomplete suggestions for academic-related searches make it possible for users to, “…explore the relationships between papers, authors, topics and publications through a large object graph.” Bing says academic queries like “find all papers by an author,” “find a paper written by particular co-authors,” or “find a paper about a specific topic presented at a conference” will surface real-time autocomplete suggestions that are “the most relevant” to the search. For movie-related searches, Bing says its newly updated autocomplete feature helps users formulate their query by analyzing the user’s natural language input, and then determining intent (with “lightning-fast” technology) to surface the most likely interpretations. 6 data visualizations in the new AdWords that will save you a ton of time

The new AdWords UI is slowly starting to roll out to accounts, with a smattering of users having access. I’ve been able to spend some time there with a small account. Getting used to the new interface is an adjustment, and not all of the functionality works yet, but there the new design is heavy on data visuals that will help cut down on reporting and analysis time. Here are the data visualizations that have caught my attention. Daypart Reporting The Day & hour card is my favorite addition to the new AdWords UI so far — and in all accounts for three of my selections here. The charts in this card turn what’s always been a complete pain into a delightful breeze. The Day & Hour card is located on the main Overview dashboard as well as the Overviews for each campaign and ad group. In each of three views — Day, Day & Hour, Hour — there is a dropdown menu to select a metric. In Search Engine Land Source

European court says linking to illegal content is copyright infringement

In a decision that is already controversial, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled in favor of copyright owners and against hyperlinks. The CJEU decision, though qualified, raises the strong possibility that publishers linking to infringing third party sites will also be liable for infringement. Critics charge the CJEU decision amounts to judicial lawmaking and is an attack on the free flow of information online, contrary to the way the internet has operated to date. It also places a burden of investigation on the linking publisher to determine whether the linked content is authorized or infringing. In some cases that may be easy to determine but in many others it won’t be. The facts of the present case were egregious but the law created by the court is bad for the internet. The copyrighted material at issue in the case, GS Media vs Sanoma, were photos (presumably nude) of Dutch celebrity Britt Dekker, which were owned by Search Engine Land Source

Google Search Console improves Security Issues reports

Google announced they have improved the Search Issues report in the Google Search Console. Specifically, the reports now provide more specific explanations of the security issues detected by Safe Browsing. The types of security issues that can show include malware, deceptive pages, harmful downloads, and uncommon downloads. The new explanations promise to give more “context and detail” into the security issues. This includes “tailored recommendations for each type of issue, including sample URLs that webmasters can check to identify the source of the issue, as well as specific remediation actions webmasters can take to resolve the issue,” Google said. How many days has it been since the last Google Penguin Update?

The Google Penguin Update is a filter designed to help Google combat severe forms of spam in its search results. This page tells you how long it has been since the last Penguin Update, which is helpful for those hoping to escape the penalty. Penguin operates on a periodic basis. When it happens, it catches and penalizes a set of sites. It also releases some sites previously caught, if they’ve reformed themselves in a way that Google likes. During the time between updates, any sites penalized by Penguin remain that way until a fresh update happens. Even if they correct problem areas, the penalty carries on until the next Penguin update happens. That’s a wait that can last for over a year. Below is our clock that counts the days since the last Penguin update: Here are the exact dates of all Penguin Updates since the filter was first developed by Google: Here are dates of all Penguin releases and the time elapsed from the Search Engine Land Source

Labor Day Google doodle marks holiday honoring the American workforce

Google has switched out its usual logo on the U.S. homepage with a Labor Day doodle honoring the American workforce. The artwork depicts men and women performing industrial trade work and includes a sharing icon. Clicking the doodle leads to a search for “Labor Day.” Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.U.S. Department of Labor According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s website, Labor Day was originally celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, but the first state law making it an official holiday wasn’t passed until five years later in Oregon. By 1894, more than thirty states had made it a holiday, including the District of Columbia. Search Engine Land wishes all our readers a Search Engine Land Source

Don’t get duped by duplicate content: 8 quick checks for every SEO

You’ve probably heard the phrase “duplicate content” being thrown around from time to time, and like any savvy webmaster, you’d never dare to publish the same content twice — but have you? Duplicate content is the equivalent of overdrawing your checking account, except instead of paying costly fees each month you’ll be sacrificing your precious crawl budget. Manifesting itself in several forms, duplicate content may be one of the most elusive and widely overlooked problems that can affect your site’s ability to rank. It oftentimes stems from a sites’ information architecture or CMS limitations — which likely means it wasn’t deliberate. Unfortunately, there is no simple check in Google Search Console that will flag this issue for you. Is a big Google search update happening? Chatter thinks so.

Have you checked your Google organic search traffic this morning? If not, you may want to. It seems Google may have tweaked their search ranking algorithm, your site may be ranking higher or lower or the same depending on if this update has impacted your web pages. Google has not yet confirmed the update but based on a lot of chatter in the search community, it seems like an update is indeed happening. To be clear, it seems like there were two updates in the past twenty-four hours. The large update seems to be around core web search, which kicked off earlier this morning or late last night. The second update was likely around local rankings in Google. Is SEO right for your business?

This may seem strange coming from an SEO guy, but there are many situations where organic search may not be the best option for a given marketing challenge. In fact, there are times when SEO is just simply not a good fit. In this article, I am going to look at a few common scenarios we see at my agency where we have been contacted for SEO and have fed back that we believe that SEO is either not aligned with their requirements or there is some other form of mismatch (speed, budget, etc.). 1. Budget This is the first and most common issue we see. The business wants to rank for a given term within a fixed time period for a set budget. Ultimately, you have to survey the landscape; and whether you are a local business or a national business, you must be realistic about what your spend needs to be to effectively move you to where you want Search Engine Land Source

Want better data from AdWords Keyword Planner? Use the forecasting tools, says Google

Now that Google has officially limited access to Keyword Planner from just anyone or any bot that wanted some good search volume data, the team behind the tool is aiming to inform advertisers how to use it more effectively for campaign planning. I’m sure there are Keyword Planner power users out there, but I’d like to think I use the tool the way most people do. That is, I get keyword ideas and a sense of CPCs to be able to make a rough budget estimate, maybe do some slicing and dicing based on geotargets and devices. If you do more than that, congratulations, you’re a power user in my mind. If you are like me, Google wants to show us how to get more out of the tool, starting with an AdWords Community post published Thursday. “We’ve heard your feedback that this limited view of search volume makes it difficult to plan new Search Network campaigns. Google’s premium-level Ad Grants program no longer accepting applications

Google appears to be winding down the premium offering of its Ad Grants program for non-profits. The following message stating, “The Ad Grants team is no longer accepting Grantspro applications,” appeared within the past 24 hours on the Ad Grants support page for the program. The Grantspro level of Google Grants offered eligible non-profits a monthly budget of $40,000, or a daily spend of up to $1,315, on free AdWords search advertising. The regular Google Grants program offers $10,000 monthly budgets for qualifying non-profits. To be eligible to get to the Grantspro level, companies at the $10,000 a month level had to be hitting a $330-per-day spend cap, or $9,900 in two of the last six months, while maintaining an average click-through rate of at least 1.0 percent. The CPC cap for Google Grant recipients is $2 per click. Local citations are dead; long live local citations!

In June, we published a large statistical study on how Google’s local algorithm works. The study data suggested that citations did not appear to correlate with good local rankings. Seems like just yesterday local search guru David Mihm called out that local citations were in fact the new link. The TL;DR was that Google was likely using mentions of a business’s information on “local documents,” which Google’s patents defined as documents that are: associated with a particular geographic area […]. A document that relates to a business listing, for example, can be considered a local document because it is associated with the particular address of the business. […] A document … may mention a business at the location, the address of the business, and/or a telephone number associated with the business. In the early days of Google Places/+Local/My Business, it was likely helpful for Google to use local citations as a partial proxy for links, as most local businesses had few or Search Engine Land Source
