Report: Google AMP results in Google News more than double

A report from RankRanger, a toolset that tracks the Google results, shows that the AMP results shown in the Google News section for mobile users have more than doubled in the past several days. A week or so ago, AMP content was showing in Google News for about 30 percent of the news results. Now it is more than double that in the Google News US-based mobile section, with 70 percent of the news results returning AMP content. Mordy Oberstein from RankRanger said, “[T]he number of AMP optimized news articles appearing within Google’s Top Stories on mobile has skyrocketed across the globe.” On January 25, RankRanger reported about 30 percent of mobile Google News box results in the US showing as AMP. On January 29, that number hit 70 percent. Here is a chart showing the rollout and increase by country: It is unclear if this is a glitch or a change in the algorithm where Google is showing more AMP for

Commercial success: 3 last-minute PPC tips to pump up the effectiveness of Super Bowl LI TV ad buys

Ah, Super Bowl Sunday. There is no bigger day for football — or advertisers. And whether they’re on their couch or at a neighborhood watering hole, fans of both will be tuning in to Super Bowl LI in droves. Sure, Super Bowl Sunday is about football. But the commercials share the spotlight. In fact, many Super Bowl viewers say they watch the game specifically for the commercials. Some (like me) skip the game entirely and just watch the commercials. As we know, commercials can be the most memorable part of the big game, with water cooler talk continuing long after the last touchdown. It’s no wonder that brands spend an absolute fortune on them. If you’re a brand that invested in TV for this year’s Super Bowl, how can you make the most of your TV spend? And what if your brand didn’t spend big for TV? How can you still benefit? Read on for three tips to make the most out Search Engine Land Source

SEM continuity: The ROI-boosting digital marketing concept you’ve never heard of

A Google search for “Holism” yields no ads, but the following definition: “the theory that parts of a whole are in intimate interconnection, such that they cannot exist independently of the whole, or cannot be understood without reference to the whole, which is thus regarded as greater than the sum of its parts.” Much of our marketing optimization effort is highly focused in discrete parts of the customer journey. We’ve created specialized roles for these discrete parts, like ad copy writing, SEO, SEM bid management, keyword optimization, web IA, front-end web development, digital graphic design, interaction design, UX… the list goes on. Yet, when customers travel on that journey, they are experiencing it in a non-discrete, holistic way. And when key parts of that journey aren’t holistically integrated, the customer experience can suffer — and thus, yields from our marketing programs can suffer. To a great extent, we have accepted the status quo. In accepting that status quo, we have also become robots, Search Engine Land Source

Attention search marketers: ALL keywords are branded keywords!

Look, I get it. For the longest time, PPC marketers and SEOs alike have been segmenting brand campaigns and content (those with trademarks and company names) from more generic search terms. After all, branded keywords tend to be “unicorns” — in PPC, these are keywords which generate ridiculously high CTRs (click-through rates) (40, 50 or 60 percent) and Quality Scores (9 or 10); in SEO, these are keywords that rank at the top of the SERP. Meanwhile, non-branded keywords perform like donkeys — in other words, average at best. While branded vs. non-branded is an interesting distinction, it’s also an incomplete one. Even non-branded keywords can act like brand terms when brand affinity exists. Here’s why it’s time that we re-examine some of our assumptions about branded vs. non-branded keywords in both paid and organic search marketing. Search doesn’t grow demand Generally in search marketing, the goal is to connect with people who are searching for your products and services. If you reach them at the Search Engine Land Source

Google AMP carousels are multiplying!

In case you missed it, Google has launched a new type of AMP rich card carousel in mobile search results — in addition to the Top Stories carousel we’re used to seeing.   The new AMP carousels appear in the main mobile results list, showcasing related articles from a single publisher. They started appearing at the end of 2016 without fanfare from Google. Let’s call them “single-source carousels.” Single-source AMP carousels are most likely to appear in results for popular queries, particularly for news stories. A January 15 search for “Kansas City Chiefs News” produced four single-source AMP carousels in addition to the Top Stories carousel: A search for “Kansas City Chiefs News” produces a Top Stories carousel, plus four single-source AMP rich card carousels. Search for any big news story, and you’ll likely get several single-source carousels in mobile results. They also appear frequently for recipe searches — try “cookie recipes,” for example. Study shows search terms with the very worst (and best) click-through rates

Not all searches are created equal — when it comes to click-through rate (CTR), that is. A new study from Seige Media uncovers the top 42 keyword terms, along with their average CTRs. This exercise examined the top 50 keyword “stems” to find what terms helped spur clicks and, more importantly, what terms didn’t. A variety of these terms with the worst click-through rates are geared toward knowledge graph answers like “translation,”  “population,” “definition” (which happen to be the number 1, 2 and 3 least-clicked terms across the board). That is to to be expected for many of these terms, as Google is trying to specifically answer questions directly.   Other searches with low CTR included terms that appear to fulfill the need for information in direction or review form. Terms like “restaurants” (46.20 percent CTR) and other local terms such as “flowers” (64.37 percent) saw click-through rates on the lower side. One term on this list that was surprising was “How To,” Search Engine Land Source

Bing Ads rolls out scheduling for ad extensions

Advertisers can now choose when to show certain ad extensions in Bing Ads. Ad extension scheduling is rolling out for nearly all extensions globally. When ad extension scheduling becomes available in your account, you’ll see the “Selected days and hours” section at the ad extension level, where you’ll be able to set times for specific days and choose whether to set the timing based on the user’s time zone or the time zone set at your account level. Scheduling will be available via the Bing Ads API, Bing Ads Bulk Upload and the Google Import function. It is not yet available in Bing Ads Editor. Scheduling is an option for app, sitelink, callout, call, review, location and structured snippet extensions. Google testing new look for local inventory ads in place of local pack

Google appears to be running a limited test for local inventory ads (LIA) on mobile that looks like a shopping ad-ification of the Local Pack. Spotted on mobile by Mike Blumenthal on a search for “engagement rings Buffalo,” the result shows a map with a couple of LIAs below it where local pack results would typically show. I have been able to replicate the result in the Google mobile app. Here the ads are for two different rings at two different Kohl’s locations in the area, signified by the respective shopping icons on the map above the ads. Clicking on either ad takes the user to the local inventory ad landing page hosted by Google. For comparison, here’s the result I see using Safari on mobile for “engagement rings Rochester” (the same search with “Bufflalo” looked similar). The result shows an all-organic local pack with listings for three independent jewelry stores. When introducing new promoted places ads in Maps last spring, Search Engine Land Source

Mind the store: Using AdWords to drive offline sales

Google has measured over three billion visits to physical stores in the past two years, and you’ll soon be able to track store visits from the Google Display Network. That’s a whole lot of visits, but it’s only scratching the surface of what’s possible. Location-based searches are on the rise, and while a lot of progress has been made in regard to measuring online-to-offline behavior, it’s still crucial to turn that data into action. In the past, I’ve gone under the hood of how Google measures store visits, and now I want to talk about what you should do with that information. Whether you qualify for store visits reporting or not, there are some steps you can follow to better reach those omnichannel users (and a quick reminder: “omnichannel users” translates to “pretty much everyone” these days). 1. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Google doodle promotes King’s message of unity

Today’s Google doodle marks the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, highlighting the civil rights leader’s message of unity. Created by guest artist Keith Mallett, the image features a line of women and men from different backgrounds and cultures with their arms crossed to hold each others’ hands. From the Google Doodle blog: Today’s Doodle, by guest artist Keith Mallett, captures one of the major themes of King’s speeches and writing: unity. “All life is interrelated,” he said. “We are all made to live together.” King urged Americans of all races to keep “working toward a world of brotherhood, cooperation, and peace.” Celebrated on the third Monday of January every year – to align with King’s January 15th birthday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first observed as a federal holiday on January 20, 1986, but did not pass at state-level by all states until 1991. 3 reasons why you can safely ignore your competitors’ traffic metrics

Website traffic is one of those metrics small business owners use to determine if their website is “working” — along with the number of inquiries, leads or sales they get from it. Traffic is also a metric that gets a lot of hype; you can find millions of articles explaining how to increase website traffic. In addition to looking at your own traffic, you can use tools that tell you how much traffic your competitors are getting. When small business owners see this information, they get concerned because generally, the traffic numbers are sometimes very high — or at least higher than what they’re getting. As one business owner said, when an agency presented competitor traffic data to him, “All I could think, when I saw the data, was, ‘They’re eating our lunch’ in terms of sales.” As I explained to him, however, these tools don’t tell you the full story. They don’t tell you, for example, whether the traffic Search Engine Land Source

Google explains what “crawl budget” means for webmasters

Gary Illyes from Google has written a blog post named What Crawl Budget Means for Googlebot. In it, he explains what crawl budget is, how crawl rate limits work, what is crawl demand and what factors impact a site’s crawl budget. First, Gary explained that for most sites, crawl budget is something they do not need to worry about. For really large sites, it becomes something that you may want to consider looking at. “Prioritizing what to crawl, when, and how much resource the server hosting the site can allocate to crawling is more important for bigger sites, or those that auto-generate pages based on URL parameters,” Gary said. Here is a short summary of what was published, but I recommend reading the full post. Crawl rate limit is designed to help Google not crawl your pages too much and too fast where it hurts your server. Crawl demand is how much Google wants to crawl your pages. 14 How to Create Meta Tags for SEO

14 How to Create Meta Tags for SEO 14 How to create Meta Tags for SEO reveals the important Meta tags for top Google ranking results. Created by https://goo.gl/V8gG4y search engine optimization consultant this video session explains how to create the perfect Meta description tag and how to utilize Firefox Web Developer Tools to tweak SERP (search engine results page) to see exactly how your web page title and meta description will look in SERP. Web page title and also Meta description elements when crafted intelligently will allow Google to show them in search snippets. If you create your Meta description while describing your landing page content (as in what will your visitors find when they visit you) then Google will more often than not show your version of the web page description. If not created properly, or if Meta descriptions are used just to include keywords and more keywords. Then that will have negative effect and not help your Google rankings at all. To learn how to create web page titles for search engine optimization purposes, you can watch this video: To learn more about which meta tags Google understands and therefore important to include for Google and how to use them, simply visit Google Webmaster Help section here: http://ift.tt/1gQNA4M I would appreciate it if you actually shared this video by copying and pasting this https://youtu.be/m-wo8BGQbKU There are many other meta tags which can be used for giving user-agents more information about the content of a particular webpage. But most of them are not helpful Google rankings, for example: defining the “meta tag revisit after” will not make Google to obey that rule. Meaning there is no way you can use a meta tag to tell Google when it should crawl your landing pages. Google does that by itself, therefore, although most webmaster use the “meta tag for revisit after directive” it actually doesn’t mean anything for Google, but it does make the size of your landing page unnecessary bigger. In terms of page load times, every bit counts. Here’s what Google’s own search quality team says about important meta tags for Google: You may want additionally use the “meta tag for unavailable after directive” this video session outlines how that works. Newly-granted Google patent sheds light on how the search engine sees entities

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a big fan of reading Google patents — or, when I’m feeling lazy, reading Bill Slawski’s analysis of them over on his blog, SEO By The Sea. I also have a particular interest in those involving entities, as they are (to me at least) the ones that are defining the problems Google is trying to solve. As machine learning evolves, entities represent how search engines increasingly are viewing the world. Before we dig into this latest Google patent, which was granted on December 22, 2016, let’s first define an entity to make sure we’re all on the same page. According to the patent, the definition is as follows: [A]n entity is a thing or concept that is singular, unique, well-defined and distinguishable. For example, an entity may be a person, place, item, idea, abstract concept, concrete element, other suitable thing, or any combination thereof. To keep things simple, you can casually think of an entity Search Engine Land Source

A simple checklist to prep for the Google mobile-first index

Hopefully, all of you learned from “Mobilegeddon” in 2015 and “Mobilegeddon 2” in 2016 that the updates Google makes to improve the smartphone user experience for the majority of Google searchers are not the end of the world. Not even close, in fact. Still, I have seen a lot of articles focused on this topic in relation to Google’s new mobile-first index, which will be launching finally this year — almost two years after Google’s Gary Illyes referenced it at SMX West. Here’s what you need to remember in order to fully take advantage of the opportunity that is the mobile index in 2017: 1. Don’t panic You may be wondering if you need to change your canonical tags, or if rankings will change, since mobile pages typically have fewer links and content is more sparse, or if expandable mobile content will count toward ranking in a new mobile index. All of these are fair questions, and you can find the answers Search Engine Land Source

Fetch and Horror: 3 examples of how fetch and render in GSC can reveal big SEO problems

In May 2014, some powerful functionality debuted in the “fetch as Google” feature in Google Search Console — the ability to fetch and render. When you ask Google to fetch and render, its crawler will fetch all necessary resources so it can accurately render a page, including images, CSS and JavaScript. Google then provides a preview snapshot of what Googlebot sees versus what a typical user sees. That’s important to know, since sites could be inadvertently blocking resources, which could impact how much content gets rendered. Adding fetch and render was a big deal, since it helps reveal issues with how content is being indexed. With this functionality, webmasters can make sure Googlebot is able to fetch all necessary resources for an accurate render. With many webmasters disallowing important directories and files via robots.txt, it’s possible that Googlebot could be seeing a limited view of the page — yet the webmaster wouldn’t even know without fetch and render. Ad copy hack for your AdWords pathways

The testing and implementation of ad copy in AdWords has become increasingly important — and increasingly difficult. This is a result of the paradigm shifts in AdWords account structures. The ad copy advice that follows can help improve ad copy relevance easily, at scale. Shift in AdWords account structures Throughout 2016, we have seen a major debate regarding the concept of AdWords account structures. Regardless of your stance, one major shift that we’ve seen over the past two years is search engine marketers reducing the number of keywords per ad group within their Google and Bing accounts. Whether that’s moving to Single Keyword Ad Groups (SKAGs) or to flexible account structures, there is no debate that account structures have been shifting toward an increase in the number of ad groups within each account. Reading summaries on these account structure shifts is definitely a valuable way to spend time if you’re not familiar with some of these changes. AdWords Managed Accounts can finally share negative keyword lists across accounts

Google has quietly added another perk for Managed Accounts: the ability to create and share negative keyword lists across accounts. Maybe you’ve been laboriously adding the same lists of negative keyword accounts manually or using a script to automate cross-account negative lists. Now, for accounts in a managed account (formerly My Client Center, or MCC), you can set up a negative keyword list in the top-level Shared Library that can then be associated at the account level. Once you create a manager account-level negative keyword list, you’ll need to apply it to campaigns at the individual account. Manager account-level lists show up in the Shared Library of each account with the label “Shared from a manager account.” Just like any other list in the Shared Library, click the check box next to it to apply it to campaigns within that account. For more details, see the AdWords support page. The post AdWords Managed Accounts can finally share negative keyword lists across accounts Search Engine Land Source

Google is launching automated call extensions in mobile ads on February 6

AmsStudio / Shutterstock.com In the second update in a week on how phone numbers display in ads, Google has begun alerting some advertisers that call extensions will start generating automatically as of February 6, 2017. The notice, emailed to advertisers that use “landing pages prominently featuring a phone number”, started going out on Monday evening. A copy of the full email is below. Click to enlarge. Though you wouldn’t know from reading this email, call extensions are already set up with the phone number on the landing pages used in this specific account. From what I can tell, the change shouldn’t affect much for this account other than that it sounds like impression volume for call extensions generally will likely go up come February 6. However, in situations where advertisers don’t want to pay for calls directed to the phone number listed on their landing pages (or any calls for that matter), they will have to opt out of all automated extensions (Google already generates Search Engine Land Source

Press Release Secrets: Use Search Engine Optimization (SEO) For The Best Press Release Results

Press Release Secrets: Use Search Engine Optimization (SEO) For The Best Press Release Results Press Release Secrets: Use Search Engine Optimization (SEO) For The Best Press Release Results Forth thing for best practices is using search engine optimization, SEO. If your press release is intended for online publication, research what the readers of that particular publication be looking for. Have a good read through the articles, what’s or what’s on there and so on. Make sure that you include at least 1 powerful keyword or keyword phrase in the headline, and in the body copy. You must always do that. That will work wonders for SEO. Google and so on will pick that up, because they’ll be searching for your keywords. Make sure you do that. Make sure it’s in your headline and in the body text as well. The fifth of the seven best practice is include 2 quotes. This goes back probably 150 years. I can remember learning this not quite that long ago, the early days. If you got 2 quotes in there, it can work really well. All news agents, if publications don’t like you to have two quotes. The convention for this is to include a quote from an interested party, like a customer or a niche enthusiast, about the topic. For example, and I’m being silly with the eels again, but “We swam in that swimming hole since I was a child without encountering any giant eels.” Said Mrs. Whatever from Wherever. South End, don’t say she lives in undecided. Include a quote from yourself is the other option, as a business owner, but you must write this in the third person. Must do that all the time. Mary Wobble, owner of the Wobble Gardens Hotel, did Mrs. Rumor of the killer eel with a wink. A few people may have had a toe nibbled while swimming, but frankly, we put that down to our 11 varieties of goldfish. Now I know that’s silly, and it makes more sense when you read the transcript below, but we’ve got a quote … We’ve got a name of a person, Mary Wobble, we’ve got the name of her hotel, Wobble Gardens Hotel, we’ve got a bit of humor in there. We’ve also managed to say that with this story about this killer eel in the pool isn’t true or it’s this minor thing. We’ve also got a sales thing. 11 varieties of goldfish in our swimming pool. All right? Silly example, but sometimes silly examples work to show you … Just to get your brains thinking about this. Sixth of the seventh best practice is embedding a video or uploading a photo. Don’t actually embed the video, let me just stress that. By all means, a link to it, but don’t embed it in emails. That thing just drives us mad. We see it all the time, embedded video in the press release. A lot of journalists work from home these days and you start embedding […]

Choosing an attribution model: When, not which

Attribution is important, no matter your industry or your buying cycle. As more attribution models are created, it becomes more difficult to understand which one is the right one, and it seems that conversations about attribution models tend to occur with the expectation that each person has chosen a camp and believes in one particular model. The reality, though, is that no single attribution model can be the standalone source of truth — because no single attribution model can paint the full picture. Part of the reason that attribution models are so difficult to agree on is what they are designed to do: to determine what is adding the most value. Each person, team or agency is likely to be partial to the attribution model that gives the most credit to their work. Obviously, if you bring your team — or your agencies — into one room to agree on an attribution model, you’ll make them very uncomfortable. So how can you Search Engine Land Source

Brand vs. local Knowledge Graph result: Which is better?

Since the expansion of Google’s Knowledge Graph, I’ve been getting tons of questions around different Knowledge Graph results. One of the most frequent questions I get from my clients and business owners is regarding which Knowledge Graph result is best to have: a general brand or local panel. Before going into the answer for this question, here are some examples of what a brand and local Knowledge Graph panel look like. Brand Local The answer to which is preferable is not as simple as you would think. It very much depends on the type of business and how it’s operated. For example, here are four scenarios where the ideal Knowledge Graph result would differ. Online-only business Business with a few locations Business with a high volume of locations nationwide A business that has one location but has a strong brand Here is a breakdown of each of the scenarios above, and examples of their Knowledge Graph results.
