How to outdo the PPC robots in shopping ads

Automation driven by improvements in artificial intelligence and machine learning will bring significant changes to how we manage pay-per-click (PPC) in 2018 and beyond. There’s still a role for humans to play, one of which is to use what we’ve learned from years of experience to bring an account as close to perfection as possible before letting the machines take it from there. Shopping ad performance may appear to be largely dependent on how well the automated algorithms work, with little room for account managers to optimize things. This is because the targeting is done automatically by Google, based on whatever products are in the merchant feed and how those relate to shoppers’ queries. But there are still ways for account managers to tweak things to move the needle in the right direction. In today’s post, I’ll explain seven ways to improve the performance of shopping ads. Eliminate ambiguous and expensive queries I remember several years ago, one of our customers wrote about

Bing Ads announced some new features and capabilities for Bing Shopping campaigns on Tuesday. Heres’s a rundown of what’s new. Show multiple images Marketers can now include multiple image URLs in their product feeds to show a product from different angles, for example. Multiple images will begin to show in Bing Product Ads by the end of April. Advertisers can now show multiple images in Bing Shopping. You can add up to 10 image URLs in the optional [additional_image_link] in your product feed, separated by a comma delimiter. Images must be bmp, gif, exif, jpg, png or tiff. The recommended minimum size is 220 pixels by 220 pixels, and the maximum allowed is 3.9 MB. As always, product images cannot contain watermarks or free shipping text. Product status reporting Four new columns are now available in the Product Groups reporting grid in the Bing Ads UI. Talented search professionals are not only experts at evolving their skill sets and adapting to the rapid changes Google makes on a recurring basis, they are also experts at understanding how an organization works across the numerous functions in their organization. Every manager is looking for an individual that can learn quickly on the job and already knows how to work cross-functionally to achieve objectives. Google is officially testing ‘more results’ button to load more search results

Kashin / Shutterstock.com Google is officially testing a “more results” button in the mobile search results interface. Instead of having to click to the next page of the Google search results, a searcher can click the “more results” button, and additional search results will load below the current results. We were able to replicate this feature test: Danny Sullivan of Google confirmed on Twitter that this test has been running for the past few days. It seems to be visible to many, if not all, searchers when searching Google on their smartphones. Google first tested this more results button in a more limited fashion, but now searchers are seeing this test more often. Google is always testing new user interfaces. How to align SEO and sales teams so everyone benefits

It’s no secret that marketing and sales don’t always see eye to eye. The sales team gets mad at the marketing team for lack of leads and marketing gets mad at sales for not closing deals. For two areas so closely tied to one another, the lack of cooperation is pretty amazing. In fact, according to a recent study from InsideView titled, “The State of Sales and Marketing Alignment in 2018,”  only 37 percent of salespeople reported meeting with marketing to discuss lead scoring. Even more telling, Hubspot’s State of Inbound 2017 report noted only 44 percent of marketers feel they are aligned with sales. Yikes! Breaking down silos isn’t simple, and it certainly isn’t a new concept. We’ve been talking about this for years, and while technology has made it much easier for sales and marketing to align, many companies still treat these departments separately. Already doing SEO? Add these two things to optimize for voice search

How do you optimize content for voice search in 2018? That’s a popular search engine optimization (SEO) question these days as everyone looks to take advantage of the surge in spoken queries. Take a look at recent trends: The answer to the popular question, “How do you optimize for voice search?” is this: Do what you would do for traditional search engine optimization and that should cover it. Really? Yep! Let’s move along now. OK, so not exactly. I’m joking to prove a point. There are a few things you can specifically do to optimize for voice search. Google patent on related entities and what it means for SEO

I read a lot of patents, many of which may or may not apply to search engine optimization (SEO) or be used by Google at all. But that’s not the case with the recently granted Google patent “Related entities.” I believe this patent is being applied and it gives us significant insight into how Google identifies entities and the related entities people are searching for. Let’s look at some details I think are interesting and get a general understanding of the patent and its intent. Understanding how Google associates entities will help us grasp and use the connections to SEO. Related entities Let’s start with understanding related entities, especially in the context of Google patent US 20180046717A1.   If you search on the phrase “presidents of the united states,” this is what you may see: The presidents shown are “related entities” and listed because the general phrase “presidents of the united states” was searched on. In big win, Apple hires Google AI chief John Giannandrea away from Google

Earlier this week, we reported on personnel changes within Google’s search organization: Ben Gomes will now be in charge of all search, and Jeff Dean is taking on leadership of Google Brain and AI. The changes come as Google SVP of Engineering John Giannandrea moves to Apple to run AI efforts there. Giannandrea “will run Apple’s machine learning and AI strategy,” according to reports. He will also report directly to the company’s CEO, Tim Cook. While Google has a “deep bench” in AI, the move is still a loss for Google and a win for Apple. Giannandrea was instrumental in infusing AI into all of Google’s main products, including search. He came originally from Metaweb when Google acquired the company in 2010. Google’s focus and emphasis on AI is such that at an event last year in San Francisco, CEO Sundar Pichai said, “We’re moving from a mobile-first world to an AI-first world.” It’s not clear from statements and published reports

Google local knowledge panel profile images are not loading in search

There is an active bug with Google search. It’s not loading the profile images in the local knowledge panel section. If you search for your favorite business and the local knowledge panel shows up in the search results, both desktop or mobile results, the profile images will not load. Instead, you will either see a blank white space or a broken graphic image. This is a global and widespread issue that has been reported to Google. We assume it will be resolved shortly, but until then, you do not need to panic. Google should fix the issue on its end. Here are some screen shots I took from both desktop and mobile of some local knowledge panels: Mike Blumenthal, who is a top contributor volunteer at Google confirmed the company has been notified of the issue: PSA: Knowledge Panel profile photo and images in GMB are broken today. Maya Angelou Google doodle features Oprah Winfrey, Laverne Cox & others reciting her poem, ‘Still I Rise’

Today marks what would have been Dr. Maya Angelou’s 90th birthday. To celebrate the poet, writer and civil rights activist, Google has created a doodle featuring a full lineup of high-profile celebrities reciting Angelou’s poem, “Still I Rise.” The doodle begins with Angelou’s own voice, narrating the beginning of her famous poem, followed by Alicia Keys, America Ferrera, Martina McBride, Guy Johnson (Angelou’s son), Laverne Cox and Oprah Winfrey each reading a verse. The words of the poem are animated to coincide with the narration, along with images highlighting Angelou’s life. “Dr. Angelou’s work is filled with such incredible wisdom and spiritual teachings,” says Laverne Cox on the Google Doodle blog featuring Angelou’s doodle. “It feels like the ultimate privilege to have the opportunity to speak her words. She is a national treasure we should always celebrate.” Oprah Winfrey is also quoted: “Maya Angelou is not what she has done or written or spoken, it’s how she did it all. Search Engine Land Source

7 ways to turn a webinar into a stream of link-attracting content

Creating large amounts of valuable content is a universal challenge for marketers. Doesn’t matter if we’re talking about images, articles, blog posts or videos. Producing large quantities sometimes causes a decrease in quality if a marketing department isn’t diligent. It’s generally agreed that quality is more important than quantity when it comes to content, but it never hurts to have both if possible. One excellent way to publish frequent, high-value content is to create webinars. Once a webinar has been produced, your creative team can repurpose and optimize it into several pieces of valuable content. Let’s take a look at the process and ways to break a single webinar into multiple pieces of quality content that can be used to support your search engine optimization (SEO) and link-building efforts. Built-in quality A primary advantage of using a webinar to create more content is that quality is already “built in.” If the webinar is full of valuable, informative topics presented by knowledgeable experts, the Search Engine Land Source

John Harrison Google doodle honors man who invented marine chronometer 283 years ago

Today’s Google doodle marks the 325th birthday of British horologist John Harrison. In 1735, the self-taught clockmaker completed his design of the first marine chronometer. According to Google, the British government had offered a reward of £20,000 to anyone who could create a navigational instrument that determined a ship’s longitude within 30 miles. Harrison spent seven years working on the ground-breaking invention that would aid British naval forces. “Harrison’s extraordinary invention brought him much acclaim. Thanks to him, seamen could not only gauge latitude but longitude, making their excursions far safer,” says Google on its Google Doodle blog. The doodle leads to a search for “John Harrison” and is being displayed on Google’s US and UK home pages, along with a small collection of other international pages, including Ireland, Germany, Spain, Ukraine, Peru and Chile. Harrison would go on to create more watches that were smaller and more accurate than his original designs: “Our colorful Doodle shows the inventor hard at Search Engine Land Source

How to use the Knowledge Graph for higher rankings

Google has been on a mission to transform search from “strings to things.” This mission was one of the many reasons for the Hummingbird update and the rise of RankBrain. To pull off this extraordinary feat, Google and its team of engineers needed to create connections between their data using “real world context.” This resulted in what we now know as “The Knowledge Graph.” Google’s goal is to create a “massive graph of real-world things and their connections, to bring more meaningful results.” When searching for information, users are no longer constrained by 10 blue links; instead, Google now displays relevant content that adds to the content of the user’s search. For example, let’s say you want to learn more about Abraham Lincoln. After typing in the query, “Abraham Lincoln,” Google will show a “card” on the right side of your search with interesting information about Honest Abe. Here is what the Knowledge Graph gives us inside Abe’s card: Name. Multiple head shots. Title. Short Search Engine Land Source

Google’s AMP Project announces new consent component ahead of GDPR compliance deadline

With the deadline for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) fast approaching, Google’s AMP team has announced a component to enable publishers to surface a user consent notification for sites using the mobile-friendly framework. From the announcement: The features to be launched include the ability to show choices in user interface notices via “accept” and “reject” semantics, and configuration of AMP element behaviors in response to users’ choices. The GitHub issue page details the component’s format and configuration options, along with future feature suggestions. As the issues surrounding GDPR consent and compliance are complicated — including acquiring per-usage consent (e.g., publishers need to acquire separate consent for users being tracked for both first-party and third-party purposes) — the project team is encouraging publishers and vendors to participate in the component’s development so that support will be available for as many integrations as possible. 7 ways to increase mobile engagement

Mobile users have traditionally been surfers rather than shoppers. According to one study from Monetate, mobile conversion rates are still less than half of desktop conversion rates. Source: Monetate EQ4 2017 Yet, though there’s an opportunity for e-commerce websites to increase their online sales through mobile, barriers do exist. Mobile checkout is less convenient than it is on desktop, and a majority of mobile consumption occurs in apps rather than websites. UK webmasters prepare for #Brexit – the EU is coming for your .eu domains

The European Commission announced that UK based companies and residents that own .EU ccTLDs will have to surrender those domain names after Brexit. The notice reads: As of the withdrawal date, undertakings and organisations that are established in the United Kingdom but not in the EU, and natural persons who reside in the United Kingdom will no longer be eligible to register .eu domain names or, if they are .eu registrants, to renew .eu domain names registered before the withdrawal date. This obviously has serious implications for those who have branded their companies or brands around .EU TLDs. Not only will they not technically be able to own or use the domain name for their web site, UK citizens/companies also will not be able to redirect the domain name to a .co.uk or other TLD migrated to. In addition, this loss of domain ownership can have implications for reputation management and encourage domain squatting. Brexit is currently scheduled for March Search Engine Land Source

To make every conversion count, count every conversion

Conversion measurement is complicated. More devices, channels and touch points mean that data is exploding, and yet cross-device behavior and the use of different identifiers, like cookies across browsers, can muddy measurement on the web. With all of that imprecision comes a thought that might keep you up at night: You might not see all of the conversions driven by your marketing. They’re still happening, but you just might not capture them in your reporting. As a performance marketer at heart, I’m frustrated any time my measurement is incomplete. Lost conversions are just about the saddest thing I can think of, but Google (my employer) has measurement tools designed to help you make the most of your conversion tracking. Tracking every possible conversion in AdWords Back in the desktop era, advertisers simply installed a conversion pixel on their checkout page, and the combination of redirects and third-party cookie reading at conversion-time accurately captured performance. Is your SEO/SEM software tool or agency worthy of a Search Engine Land Award?

For the first three years of the Search Engine Land Awards program, we made a conscious decision not to include awards categories such as “Best SEO Software” or “Best SEM Tool”. The logic behind this choice had many layers, but among the top reasons: Judging all tools individually would require access and significant time to evaluate tool features. Tools and platform choices are inherently challenging for customers – budget, user seats, implementation needs, and so forth vary greatly across a wide scope of users, and selecting a limited few does a disservice to the community at large. As an unbiased publication, we simply cannot endorse a “Top 10” or ultimate winner among the many useful tools available in the industry. However, there is no denying that most of the SEO tools and SEM platforms available in the industry provide inherent value to both users and the community at large, whether you are an existing customer or prospective one. All About the GDPR

While deregulation has been a stateside trend over the past decade, the 28 members of the European Union are gearing up for a massive increase in regulations around data privacy in the form of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) — and this regulation will make a splash across the pond as well. Briefly, virtually all personal information will be considered private and protected under these new rules, serving up a much more comprehensive approach than the US’s piecemeal protections of medical and financial data. But what do these new rules mean — if anything — for US businesses? The short answer: Plenty. Maybe. It depends. The long answer requires some context and is worth taking the time to understand. And most providers are already making big strides to be ready for launch in May. Internet privacy: The early years The GDPR, set to go into effect on May 25, 2018, is the product of four years of debate and preparation — but

Europeans again raise the specter of breaking up Google

In 2014, the European Parliament held a mostly symbolic, non-binding vote to break up Google. This weekend, European Commission competition chief Margrethe Vestager told the UK’s The Telegraph that “the threat to split the internet giant up into smaller companies must be kept open.” Vestager is being transparent when she says “the threat . . . must be kept open” — for leverage. As a practical matter, it’s extremely unlikely that the European Commission could unilaterally impose that sort of antitrust “remedy” on Google, especially if it were opposed in the US. If there were broad agreement on both sides of the Atlantic and Google itself agreed to be broken up, that would be a very different story. Much more likely are additional potential fines. In June of last year, the European Commission imposed a $2.7 billion fine on Google “abuse of its market power” in vertical (shopping) search. Google has appealed the fine. Proposed EU consumer rules to force ‘marketplaces’ to reveal ‘default ranking criteria’

Any internet company or platform that collects user data will reportedly come under the jurisdiction of new European Commission consumer protection rules. This is part of a forthcoming “major overhaul of EU consumer rules.” One aim of the revision is to create more transparency for consumers around free internet services, which is parallel to what’s required under the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The new consumer rules will also require “online marketplaces to inform consumers about how they rank different search results” — in other words, why results are presented in a specific order. Here, “marketplace” would include Amazon, eBay and others that sell a range of products they don’t manufacture themselves. Marketplaces will also need to inform consumers whether the product being purchased is coming from the marketplace provider itself or a third-party seller on the platform — answering the question: What is the product’s source? Giants collide: Google’s impending showdown with Amazon

Talk in the digital advertising space has traditionally focused on Google and Facebook’s digital duopoly, each fighting for more of your advertising dollars. But for Google, the real competition is coming from elsewhere. Over the last few years, Google has pushed further and further into the retail space. Simultaneously, Amazon expanded its advertising platform. In the end, they both want the same thing: your purchase intent. As these two tech behemoths continue to get more and more similar, who will lead? And more importantly, what should you do about it? Google’s bid to become a retailer We’re used to thinking of Google as a search engine. For advertisers, Google’s search engine results page (SERP) is composed of text and product (Google Shopping) ads. The popularity of these product ads with digital marketers has grown in popularity. According to Adobe’s Digital Index, spend on Google Shopping has surpassed that of text ads in every market. This is especially true when it comes to Search Engine Land Source

Google: Using non-English URLs for non-English websites is fine

Google Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst John Mueller said in a recent SEO snippets video that using non-English URLs for non-English websites is fine and that Google is able to crawl, index and rank them. This includes non-Latin characters in your URLs. John Mueller said “as long as URLs are valid and unique, that’s fine.” He added, “So to sum it up, yes, non-English words and URLs are fine, [and] we recommend using them for non-English websites.” Here is the video followed by the transcript: Can URLs use local non-English words? For sites that target users outside of English-speaking regions, it’s sometimes unclear if they can really use their own language for URLs, and if so, what about non-English characters? Google search uses URLs primarily as a way to address a piece of content. We use URLs to crawl a page, which is when Googlebot goes to check the page and to use the pages content for our search results. As long as URLs are Search Engine Land Source

Spring Equinox Google doodle introduces Quinn, an animated flower fairy & musician

Google has posted its Spring Equinox doodle, a lovely animated image of what appears to be a flower fairy playing music among the colorful first blooms of the season. “This year’s seasonal Doodle series protagonist, Quinn, is strumming a pleasant tune to coax a mysterious creature out of hiding. With a mild breeze and beautiful flowers, would it be, could it be, spring?” asks Google on the Google Doodle Blog. Leading to a search for “Spring Equinox,” the doodle was designed by doodler Sophie Diao. As Google reports, the term “equinox” comes from the Latin combination of equi, meaning equal, and nox, for night. The Spring Equinox marks a 24-hour period on Earth when day and night are almost exactly equal lengths of 12 hours because the earth’s axis is perpendicular to the sun’s rays. While the countries in the Northern Hemisphere are currently seeing Google’s Spring Equinox doodle, Google home pages in the Southern Hemisphere are seeing a Fall Equinox Search Engine Land Source

Google stops showing zero search results for time, calculations & conversions

Google has stopped showing zero search results, i.e., only the answer, followed by a button to “show all results” for searches related to time, calculations and conversions. The blue search results links are now back. Google began this global experiment a week ago today and has now concluded that “the condensed view experiment should stop for now.” Danny Sullivan, Google’s search liaison, wrote on Twitter: We have enough data and feedback — which is appreciated — to conclude that the condensed view experiment should stop for now. The team will look at improving when and how it appears. Here is what this “condensed view” looked like: Google said originally this was only an experiment but one that was visible globally to all searchers. Google said it will look at the feedback and see if there are ways to improve how it appears. Here is Sullivan’s tweet about the test: Update! We have enough data and feedback — which is appreciated — to conclude that

St. Patrick’s Day Google doodle includes hidden word written in ancient Irish ogham alphabet

Today’s Google doodle celebrating St. Patrick’s Day includes a hidden word, but you have to know the ancient Irish ogham alphabet to decipher it. Created by the Irish artist Ross Stewart, the doodle leads to a search for “St. Patrick’s Day.” The image depicts a traditional Irish scene, with a stonemason arranging rocks that spell out the name Google. The secret message written in ogham alphabet letters is carved into the large stone. “Standing in for the Google ‘L’ is a tall stone that pays homage to Ireland’s earliest form of writing: ogham,” writes Google on the Google Doodle Blog, “The edge is marked with a series of ancient carvings, each group representing a letter of the ogham alphabet.” Google shared the following early sketches of Stewart’s work for the St. Patrick’s Day doodle: If you’re having trouble figuring out the what’s carved in the large stone, Google’s doodle team offered up a link to an image search Search Engine Land Source

Search Engine Land’s Community Corner: Charity selected for 2018 Search Engine Land Awards

It’s hard to imagine the search community evolving as it has without the support and active participation of Matt Cutts. Those newer to search marketing may never have had the opportunity to meet Google’s Distinguished Engineer and get to know what a thoughtful, kind and open participant he was with the SEO community in particular. I’m honored to have been able to get to know and spend as much time with him as I did while he was still with Google. He suffered an unimaginable tragedy last week, and we as a community rallied around him to help in ways large and small and let him know he remains an important part our industry. Following the unexpected passing of Matt’s beloved wife Cindy, our community immediately offered heartfelt support for Matt in a tremendously difficult time, with search professionals around the globe letting Matt know just how much he has meant to our industry at large.
