UK webmasters prepare for #Brexit – the EU is coming for your .eu domains

The European Commission announced that UK based companies and residents that own .EU ccTLDs will have to surrender those domain names after Brexit. The notice reads: As of the withdrawal date, undertakings and organisations that are established in the United Kingdom but not in the EU, and natural persons who reside in the United Kingdom will no longer be eligible to register .eu domain names or, if they are .eu registrants, to renew .eu domain names registered before the withdrawal date. This obviously has serious implications for those who have branded their companies or brands around .EU TLDs. Not only will they not technically be able to own or use the domain name for their web site, UK citizens/companies also will not be able to redirect the domain name to a .co.uk or other TLD migrated to. In addition, this loss of domain ownership can have implications for reputation management and encourage domain squatting. Brexit is currently scheduled for March Search Engine Land Source

To make every conversion count, count every conversion

Conversion measurement is complicated. More devices, channels and touch points mean that data is exploding, and yet cross-device behavior and the use of different identifiers, like cookies across browsers, can muddy measurement on the web. With all of that imprecision comes a thought that might keep you up at night: You might not see all of the conversions driven by your marketing. They’re still happening, but you just might not capture them in your reporting. As a performance marketer at heart, I’m frustrated any time my measurement is incomplete. Lost conversions are just about the saddest thing I can think of, but Google (my employer) has measurement tools designed to help you make the most of your conversion tracking. Tracking every possible conversion in AdWords Back in the desktop era, advertisers simply installed a conversion pixel on their checkout page, and the combination of redirects and third-party cookie reading at conversion-time accurately captured performance. Is your SEO/SEM software tool or agency worthy of a Search Engine Land Award?

For the first three years of the Search Engine Land Awards program, we made a conscious decision not to include awards categories such as “Best SEO Software” or “Best SEM Tool”. The logic behind this choice had many layers, but among the top reasons: Judging all tools individually would require access and significant time to evaluate tool features. Tools and platform choices are inherently challenging for customers – budget, user seats, implementation needs, and so forth vary greatly across a wide scope of users, and selecting a limited few does a disservice to the community at large. As an unbiased publication, we simply cannot endorse a “Top 10” or ultimate winner among the many useful tools available in the industry. However, there is no denying that most of the SEO tools and SEM platforms available in the industry provide inherent value to both users and the community at large, whether you are an existing customer or prospective one. That’s why for 2018, we Search Engine Land Source

Bing Ads Editor getting support for account level ad extensions

Bing Ads rolled out account level ad extensions in September 2017, allowing advertisers to assign an extension across all the campaigns in an account. Now, there is finally starting to be support for them in Bing Ads Editor. Starting with callout extensions, advertisers will be able to associate account-level ad extensions in Editor as shown in the screen shot below. Bing Ads Editor will support account-level ad extensions. You’ll need to select the account level in the navigation in the upper right to access account-level extensions. And, as with shared library updates, account level ad extension associations are always posted, regardless of whether all campaigns or selected campaigns are being posted. Support for other extensions at the account level will be rolling out in the near future. Google honors Hannah Glasse, first popular cookbook writer, with a Google doodle

Hannah Glasse, the English cookbook writer of the 18th century, is being honored today on the Google home page with her own Google doodle. The doodle shows a woman loading food into an old-fashioned oven with a book below. Hannah Glasse was a pioneer who wrote the most popular cookbooks in her times. “The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy,” her cookbook, was published in 1747 and was printed in 40 editions, many of which were pirated. The book was written in plain English so it could be used by all types of people, no matter their education level. Hannah Glasse was born in London 310 years ago on March 28, 1708, and passed away at the age of 62 on September 1, 1770. She had a large family. Some say she had 10 children, some say she had 11. Waze launches ‘Local’ ads primarily aimed at SMBs and franchises

eskay / Shutterstock.com Previewed roughly a year ago, Waze is now introducing “Waze Local,” map-based ads aimed primarily (though not exclusively) at small businesses. Designed to be simple to buy and set up, it features three ad units: Branded Pin. Promoted Search. Zero-Speed Takeover. Below are screen mockups of each type of ad. The Branded Pin offers additional information when it’s clicked. Promoted Search gives priority rankings to advertisers in a search context (like AdWords), and the Zero-Speed Takeover is a banner that only appears during traffic stops. In an internal study with 1,400 US advertisers during the beta period, Waze said advertisers saw “20.4 percent more monthly navigations when they started advertising with Waze Local.” Beyond the ads themselves, there are two primary offerings that feature different pricing for different segments: “Starter” and “Plus.” Starter is for businesses with fewer than 10 locations. Bing ‘intelligent search’ capabilities continue to expand, include facts from multiple sources

Bing has announced several upgrades to its AI-powered intelligent search capabilities. Bing first launched intelligent search in December, bringing artificial intelligence to deliver richer search answers, and enhance image and conversational search. Now, Bing is launching more intelligent search features with: Aggregated facts across multiple sources. Hover-over definitions for uncommon words. Multiple answers for how-to questions. Object detection for all common top fashion categories. Using Intel’s FPGA chips allows Bing to quickly read and analyze billions of documents across the entire web and provide the best answer to your question in less than a fraction of a second. When searching for facts, Bing may show information from multiple sources, all in one featured snippet. Here is a screen shot: Bing will offer facts pulled from multiple sources with an expansion of intelligent answers. All About the GDPR

While deregulation has been a stateside trend over the past decade, the 28 members of the European Union are gearing up for a massive increase in regulations around data privacy in the form of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) — and this regulation will make a splash across the pond as well. Briefly, virtually all personal information will be considered private and protected under these new rules, serving up a much more comprehensive approach than the US’s piecemeal protections of medical and financial data. But what do these new rules mean — if anything — for US businesses? The short answer: Plenty. Maybe. It depends. The long answer requires some context and is worth taking the time to understand. And most providers are already making big strides to be ready for launch in May. Internet privacy: The early years The GDPR, set to go into effect on May 25, 2018, is the product of four years of debate and preparation — but

Europeans again raise the specter of breaking up Google

In 2014, the European Parliament held a mostly symbolic, non-binding vote to break up Google. This weekend, European Commission competition chief Margrethe Vestager told the UK’s The Telegraph that “the threat to split the internet giant up into smaller companies must be kept open.” Vestager is being transparent when she says “the threat . . . must be kept open” — for leverage. As a practical matter, it’s extremely unlikely that the European Commission could unilaterally impose that sort of antitrust “remedy” on Google, especially if it were opposed in the US. If there were broad agreement on both sides of the Atlantic and Google itself agreed to be broken up, that would be a very different story. Much more likely are additional potential fines. In June of last year, the European Commission imposed a $2.7 billion fine on Google “abuse of its market power” in vertical (shopping) search. Google has appealed the fine. Two other antitrust cases are pending against Google Search Engine Land Source

Proposed EU consumer rules to force ‘marketplaces’ to reveal ‘default ranking criteria’

Any internet company or platform that collects user data will reportedly come under the jurisdiction of new European Commission consumer protection rules. This is part of a forthcoming “major overhaul of EU consumer rules.” One aim of the revision is to create more transparency for consumers around free internet services, which is parallel to what’s required under the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The new consumer rules will also require “online marketplaces to inform consumers about how they rank different search results” — in other words, why results are presented in a specific order. Here, “marketplace” would include Amazon, eBay and others that sell a range of products they don’t manufacture themselves. Marketplaces will also need to inform consumers whether the product being purchased is coming from the marketplace provider itself or a third-party seller on the platform — answering the question: What is the product’s source? There’s an analogous effort in Europe to get search engines and big platforms Search Engine Land Source

Google: Using non-English URLs for non-English websites is fine

Google Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst John Mueller said in a recent SEO snippets video that using non-English URLs for non-English websites is fine and that Google is able to crawl, index and rank them. This includes non-Latin characters in your URLs. John Mueller said “as long as URLs are valid and unique, that’s fine.” He added, “So to sum it up, yes, non-English words and URLs are fine, [and] we recommend using them for non-English websites.” Here is the video followed by the transcript: Can URLs use local non-English words? For sites that target users outside of English-speaking regions, it’s sometimes unclear if they can really use their own language for URLs, and if so, what about non-English characters? Spring Equinox Google doodle introduces Quinn, an animated flower fairy & musician

Google has posted its Spring Equinox doodle, a lovely animated image of what appears to be a flower fairy playing music among the colorful first blooms of the season. “This year’s seasonal Doodle series protagonist, Quinn, is strumming a pleasant tune to coax a mysterious creature out of hiding. With a mild breeze and beautiful flowers, would it be, could it be, spring?” asks Google on the Google Doodle Blog. Leading to a search for “Spring Equinox,” the doodle was designed by doodler Sophie Diao. As Google reports, the term “equinox” comes from the Latin combination of equi, meaning equal, and nox, for night. The Spring Equinox marks a 24-hour period on Earth when day and night are almost exactly equal lengths of 12 hours because the earth’s axis is perpendicular to the sun’s rays. Google stops showing zero search results for time, calculations & conversions

Google has stopped showing zero search results, i.e., only the answer, followed by a button to “show all results” for searches related to time, calculations and conversions. The blue search results links are now back. Google began this global experiment a week ago today and has now concluded that “the condensed view experiment should stop for now.” Danny Sullivan, Google’s search liaison, wrote on Twitter: We have enough data and feedback — which is appreciated — to conclude that the condensed view experiment should stop for now. The team will look at improving when and how it appears. Here is what this “condensed view” looked like: Google said originally this was only an experiment but one that was visible globally to all searchers. Google said it will look at the feedback and see if there are ways to improve how it appears. Here is Sullivan’s tweet about the test: Update! We have enough data and feedback — which is appreciated — to conclude that

St. Patrick’s Day Google doodle includes hidden word written in ancient Irish ogham alphabet

Today’s Google doodle celebrating St. Patrick’s Day includes a hidden word, but you have to know the ancient Irish ogham alphabet to decipher it. Created by the Irish artist Ross Stewart, the doodle leads to a search for “St. Patrick’s Day.” The image depicts a traditional Irish scene, with a stonemason arranging rocks that spell out the name Google. The secret message written in ogham alphabet letters is carved into the large stone. “Standing in for the Google ‘L’ is a tall stone that pays homage to Ireland’s earliest form of writing: ogham,” writes Google on the Google Doodle Blog, “The edge is marked with a series of ancient carvings, each group representing a letter of the ogham alphabet.” Google shared the following early sketches of Stewart’s work for the St. Patrick’s Day doodle: If you’re having trouble figuring out the what’s carved in the large stone, Google’s doodle team offered up a link to an image search Search Engine Land Source

Search Engine Land’s Community Corner: Charity selected for 2018 Search Engine Land Awards

It’s hard to imagine the search community evolving as it has without the support and active participation of Matt Cutts. Those newer to search marketing may never have had the opportunity to meet Google’s Distinguished Engineer and get to know what a thoughtful, kind and open participant he was with the SEO community in particular. I’m honored to have been able to get to know and spend as much time with him as I did while he was still with Google. He suffered an unimaginable tragedy last week, and we as a community rallied around him to help in ways large and small and let him know he remains an important part our industry. Following the unexpected passing of Matt’s beloved wife Cindy, our community immediately offered heartfelt support for Matt in a tremendously difficult time, with search professionals around the globe letting Matt know just how much he has meant to our industry at large. Stop! Think twice before using nofollow attributes on your website

Recently, a number of major websites like Forbes, Entrepreneur, Inc. and Huffington Post started using nofollow attributes on their outbound links. This trend puzzles me. If you can’t trust the people adding links to their articles, they shouldn’t be writing for you in the first place. Even more disturbing is the fact that search engine optimization specialists (SEOs) seem to misunderstand how to use nofollow attributes and tend to overuse them. Here’s how they work: There’s a big difference between using nofollow for an entire page through the head section or the HTTP Header and using the nofollow attribute on specific links. I can’t think of a single case where I would want to use nofollow at a page level and kill the flow of all signals to other pages, even mine. And yet, I understand nofollow is being used at page level on many websites. You may consider using nofollow attributes on some user-generated content or paid links to avoid an outbound penalty, but nofollowing an Search Engine Land Source

What’s different about digital marketing in the cannabis industry?

The cannabis industry is one of the fastest-growing in the US, with a diverse and exciting startup landscape. And yet, it faces an uphill battle when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO), pay-per-click (PPC) and marketing. There are no AdWords or Facebook advertising programs available and no current opportunities to advertise a cannabis company among any of the larger advertising platforms. This seems unlikely to change until these products are legal at the federal level. You can understand how Facebook wouldn’t want the attention that may come from allowing dispensaries or cannabis brands to advertise, even on a limited basis, in states that legalized it. That probably would not go over well in today’s political climate. So, how are cannabis brands winning online, and what is different about digital marketing in the cannabis industry? Sorry, advertisers — cannabis isn’t ready yet I spoke with Public Relations Manager Jordon Rahmil and Director of Digital Marketing Kevin Keeland at Cura Cannabis Solutions about their experiences in Search Engine Land Source

How using search opportunities can guide link-building content strategies

Content and links are still pillars of search engine optimization (SEO). In fact, Google has told us in the past these components are two of the top three factors in Google’s search algorithm. By now, we should all know this, but many people are still making a critical mistake when it comes to content and links and how they relate to each other in terms of search optimization. The majority of webmasters brainstorm, design and execute content initiatives, then pursue links. I feel this may not be the best strategy. Link building should be a consideration before content is published and should be used to guide content strategy. When search opportunity dictates content strategy rather than the other way around, the results can be tremendous. When you can consult on content strategy before linking begins, the results can be positive: As you can see, we had success securing links and expanding keyword rankings, and because the content was targeted and strategic, it only Search Engine Land Source

Google adding business descriptions in Google My Business & local panel

Google looks to be adding a feature in Google My Business that allows business owners to add descriptions that appear in the local panel in search results. Both @deegs20 and @maulikpanchal posted screen shots of this in action. Google removed this feature back in 2016 when they dropped the Google+ support but it seems to be added back via the Google My Business console. Users of Google My Business can go into their accounts and click on the “info” section, where they may see this business description section that can be edited. Here is a screenshot from Dave DiGregorio: It then can show up in your local panel, towards the bottom: This information was also recently added to the official Google help documents, which now say: Enter a brief description of your business — what you offer, what sets you apart, your history, or anything else that’s helpful for customers to know. What are the keys to delivering a seamless omni-channel experience?

Consumers are bombarded by hundreds of competing messages every day, many of which lack any specific relevance to them. As they become more and more fatigued from this excess noise, consumers are becoming more adept and emboldened to tune all a brand’s marketing efforts out if they miss the mark. So, how can brands cut through this noise and build the consistent experience that consumers actually welcome? To do this, growth marketers must create “omni-channel relevance” by creating one-to-one personalization that is consistent across all channels and at scale. Inside the Growth Marketer’s Playbook, Iterable will walk through each of these channels and discuss best practices for captivating your audiences, activating your data and automating intelligent campaigns. Chat rate is the new CTR for AdWords message extensions

Now the company is announcing formal reporting for messaging. It will be available in the next few weeks in the US, the UK, Canada, France, Brazil and Australia. Users of message extensions will need to turn on message reporting in account settings. Three primary metrics will be captured: Chat rate: This is analogous to CTR (impressions vs. actual messaging interactions). Start time: When users tend to interact with you via messaging. Google says this metric will help with dayparting. Number of messages exchanged within a single chat session: Google says to use this metric to evaluate which ad creatives are driving the most engagement. Each session will be charged as a click. Google working to integrate AMP benefits into future open web standards

Google continues to make major investments in improving the performance of and user experience on the web. This has been primarily through the Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) framework, which was first launched in 2015 and has been aggressively developed, promoted, and integrated into publishing platforms ever since. Initially viewed as another proprietary format (even though it is open source), in addition to only providing a limited feature set at launch, the AMP framework has struggled with widespread adoption. Support for AMP across the entire web currently stands at less than .1%. However, sites that have adopted AMP have seen encouraging gains in site performance and conversions (which presumes a correlating better site user experience). These and other noted benefits have led Google to begin working toward taking the technologies utilized by AMP and folding them into open web standards. From the announcement today: “The standardization work motivated by AMP is well under way through various WICG projects. Google’s goal is to

Google AMP team launches ‘Render on Idle’ to load ads faster when browsers sit idle

Google’s AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) team has launched a new feature called Render on Idle that is designed to increase ad impressions per page by speeding up ad load when a user isn’t taking any action in a browser. Render on Idle is available to publishers using the DoubleClick AMP ad tag or any ad network that implements Fast Fetch, an AMP-specific mechanism that lowers the likelihood users will see empty ad slots by allowing ad requests to happen as page content is rendering. Ads render just before the ad slot is in view. From the announcement: With Render on Idle, ads load 12 viewports from the user’s scroll position (as opposed to 3) when the browser is idle, no other page content is being retrieved or rendered. This delivers better ad performance by loading ads earlier in the page lifecycle. WeWork announced today that it is buying Conductor. Conductor CEO Seth Besmertnik believes this is a “huge win for the entire industry.” I spoke to him to get a better sense of how the companies fit together and how WeWork might deploy Conductor’s services and capabilities for its customers, which it calls “members.” Besmertnik spoke expansively about the overlap and common values of the two companies. “WeWork thinks holistically about its members. It started out helping businesses of all sizes manage their presence and culture,” he explained. “We’re different but similar; we think marketing can be used as a force to do good. We want to educate our customers to make better decisions.” Besmertnik sees the deal as “huge validation” for the SEO community. The deal comes at a time of declining organic reach, though high-quality, trustworthy content is probably more valuable than ever. Bing has confirmed support for JSON-LD formatted Schema.org markup

Bing has confirmed that it is actively building out verification tools within its Webmaster Tools set to enable verification of schema.org structured data markup that is in JSON-LD format. Existing support includes validation for schema.org markup in Microdata or RDFa format only. After seeing this tweet from CBSi’s Jon Henshaw, we reached out to Bing for comment, and Bing’s Head of Evangelism Christi Olson confirmed: “Yes, Bing does support JSON-LD.” Olson further added: “Bing has been using JSON-LD as a signal, but we are still building out the verification tools as part of the Webmaster Tools offering.” Olson was unable to provide a time frame for when this will be available to webmasters. We’ll follow up when the new tool’s availability is live and formally announced. The post Bing has confirmed support for JSON-LD formatted Schema.org markup appeared first on Search Engine Land.
