The future of voice-related SEO for local business

Alexander Supertramp / Shutterstock.com On May 18, Google brought hundreds of developers together for Google I/O, its annual developer conference. Hot topics included artificial intelligence, natural language processing, voice recognition, translation and new product announcements — Google Home, Google assistant and Allo. Maybe you’ve heard about some of these, but I’m going to share thoughts on how you should adapt your local marketing to these developments. But first, a brief recap of some of these announcements. Google Home is Google’s answer to Amazon’s Echo. It’s a voice-activated speaker-like device that can intelligently listen to commands, return answers to queries from Google Search, control home automation, play music and set appointments using a new platform called Google assistant. Allo is Google’s new messaging app. It uses integrated machine learning and continues to learn your style over time, making it more convenient for users to get things done — make reservations, list tasks, schedule meetings and so on. It also features Smart Reply, Search Engine Land Source

SEMPO’s latest salary survey shows search marketer average pay up 16% over 2013

According to SEMPO’s most recent salary survey, the average pay for search and digital marketing professionals is up 16 percent since 2013. The nonprofit organization for SEO and SEM professionals polled nearly 600 search and digital marketing professionals across a variety of roles, from entry-level to executive. Survey questions covered a variety of salary and work-related topics, including compensation packages, bonuses and benefits, professional responsibilities and search marketing budget sizes. Other key findings from the survey showed a growth in SEM salaries at the $100,000 range, and the ranks of search veterans also on the rise. On the flip-side, the number of entry-level practitioners was on the decline. Ninety-four percent of respondents said analytics were a key part of their search duties, and more than 10 percent of respondents claimed to manage 50 or more accounts or websites. As far as job perks are concerned, being able to work remotely was the most-cited work benefit. Marc Engelsman, SEMPO’s vice president of research, Search Engine Land Source

Refine your content marketing tactics to benefit from enhanced search engine display

Content marketing has become commonplace for marketers today. For those who need guidance, there are numerous handbooks and step-by-step resources that teach the best ways to understand who we’re marketing to and what their needs are. Most content marketing guides can explain the principles of optimization, as well as the critical role that search engines play in generating content visibility. What the guides fail to address are the many features or types of search results that exist and how they impact the visibility of content that is produced.  These enhancements — special methods of display tailored to match the type of content being shown — encompass a wide range of SERP features, including: Knowledge Graph; local pack; reviews; site links; and Featured Snippets. In this article, I’ll focus on Google and use Google-specific terminology, though Bing has unique methods of displaying information as well. Let’s explore the most effective ways Google enhances its search results and look at examples of keywords and content Search Engine Land Source

Google has measured 1 billion+ store visits from AdWords ads globally

To help close the online-to-offline attribution gap, Google introduced store visits tracking and measurement in AdWords in December, 2014. Since that time, the company says, it has measured more than 1 billion store visits globally in its effort to show the impact of online advertising on in-store traffic. In addition, AdWords store visits measurement is now available to 1,000 advertisers in 11 countries, including automotive dealers, Google announced at its annual Performance Summit on Tuesday. In one case study cited during the event, Nissan UK found that 6 percent of mobile ad clicks — both brand and non-brand — led to a dealership visit. In another, Seven & i Holdings found that 10 percent of mobile searches led to a store visit in Japan. In April 2015, Google had shared that US retailers saw 10 times more conversions from mobile search ads, on average, when they accounted for store visits. Advertisers in the US travel and auto verticals saw 2 times higher conversions when store visit data was included. 4 effective local positioning strategies you’re overlooking

As SEOs, we know having the right content, in the right place, at the right time, can work to elevate search positioning and increase a local business’s conversions. After all, getting in front of your customers when, where and how they want to interact with your brand is a leading concept behind inbound marketing. Simply put, if you’re not getting in front of your audience when your audience is trying to find you, you are in trouble — especially on a local level, where multiple competitors compete within close proximity. The idea that content is key to increasing local search visibility is not new, but strategies to determine exactly what content your audience is seeking are constantly discovered. You can create great content all you want, but if your audience isn’t searching on those terms, or if they are uninterested in that content, time and energy spent on producing the material will not render increases in positioning. What marketers need to know about Google assistant and Google Home

What started with Siri in 2010 is quickly leading to an age where consumers engage with the internet using only their voices, in much the way Captain Picard engaged with the computer on the USS Enterprise. Google’s foray into voice search has been calculated and planned for years, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. It currently appears to be based on a closed system owned and overseen by Google, not on an open system like the trillions of websites that populate the internet are built on (i.e., HTML). I predicted this eventuality more than two years ago, after the Nest acquisition. These are the problems and challenges brought by Google’s new assistant that marketers and SEOs alike need to be aware of. Google I/O 2016 announcement On May 18, 2016, Google announced Google Home, a speaker that houses the new Google assistant (Yes, it’s Google assistant with a lower-case a, not Google Assistant) platform and that resembles the Amazon Echo. In a talk Thursday at Google I/O, Google’s Richard Gingras said the purpose is to give trusted publishers a way to send Google their content immediately, without Google having any delay in discovering that content. Building Backlinks in Search Engine Optimization

Building Backlinks in Search Engine Optimization http://www.seoloom.com – is the source of affordable listings of seo services from all over the world. You can find there all the seo services you need: – Blog Commenting. Easy way to get backlinks, do comment on dofollow blogs. Use Follow List or this software to find out blogs related to your niche. – Web Directory. You can submit your blog to Directory but Nowdays Google, doesn’t put so much importance on the free Web Directory listings. – Link Exchange & Blogroll. This is most common way to increase your backlinks but Keep in mind you don’t want too many outbound links, so don’t go crazy with link exchanges. – Forum Posting. These days Many Forums provide Dofollow link via signatures of signed up users. If the forum is a popular one, a backlink can be extremely valuable. In a lot of cases however, administrators don’t allow links in forums posts. Some administrators even prohibit the search engines from indexing their content. – Submit your voice on Digg — First build a solid profile, where you have a network of loyal diggers. – Social Bookmarking. These days Social media is very popular source of backlinks. At least bookmark yourself. Create good content on your website, other members will eventually bookmark you and you’ll get a free backlink. A good example is delicious.com and digg.com. – Stumble upon. At least hit the”I like this” for your web page. If you can find stumble upon partners, this will help bring traffic to your website beyond expectations. – Press Release. Submit press release about events in your business and website. Of course include the link to your website. – Squidoo Page. It’s easy and if you have the time to develop it, it can be very authoritative. If you don’t there’s heaps of services out there to help you out. Totally far-out drag and drop modules, not so strict moderators, solid backlinks and a chance to get some quality traffic too. – Post around on forums asking for reciprocal link exchanges, but yet again be warned on your selection. – Article directories. Meet Google assistant: A new search platform, rather than a gadget or an app

Are you ready for Google assistant? Well, it’s not a device you can buy or an app you can purchase. Rather, it’s a platform unveiled today by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, a name given to putting Google’s smarts into anything. As Google puts it, the “next evolution” of Google Search. And yes, it’s Google assistant — lower-case “assistant” — not Google Assistant. “It’s not enough to give them links. We really need to help them get things done in the real world. This is why we’re evolving search to be more assistive,” Pichai said when speaking about Google assistant during the opening keynote of Google I/O, Google’s big annual developers’ conference held today. For comparison, you can think of Google assistant the way Amazon has an Alexa assistant in the Echo, but the Echo itself isn’t Alexa. Similarly, Microsoft builds its Cortana assistant into Windows devices and will be bringing it to Xbox. No catchy name for “Google inside” The move still Search Engine Land Source

Google says 20 percent of mobile queries are voice searches

Alexander Supertramp / Shutterstock.com Earlier today Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced during his Google I/O keynote that 20 percent of queries on its mobile app and on Android devices are voice searches. He spoke about this in the context of introducing Google’s new Amazon Echo competitor Google Home. This 20 percent figure is actually lower than one mentioned by Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt in September 2010. At that time he said, “25% of Android searches in the U.S. are voice searches.” Regardless of the precise number, it’s clear that voice searches are growing. In December, we reported on survey data from MindMeld that found that there has been a significant increase in voice assistant and voice search usage, with 60 percent of survey respondents saying that they had started using virtual assistants and voice search in the past 12 months. The range of virtual assistants, such as Siri, Cortana, Google Voice Search/Now, Viv, Amazon Alexa and now Google Home are Search Engine Land Source

Google launches rich cards for movies and recipe websites

Google has announced their next step to rich snippets, the way webmasters can markup their pages to richen up how Google displays their pages in their search results. They are calling it Rich cards. Rich cards are very similar to rich snippets but use a card carousel feature with a higher resolution image to improve the searcher’s experience. Here is a photo comparing the three: Google said rich cards are currently only available for recipes and movies sites, and use structured markup around those recipes and movies formats. They are only being shown in mobile search results in English for google.com for now. Google hopes to expand it both to more types of sites and more users in the future. Google has updated their developer site with more documentation and examples to help you learn this new format. Plus they added a rich cards report in the Google Search Console. The SEM agency is dying (and what to do about it)

Search engine marketing agencies will face many business challenges over the next couple of years, including increased competition, fee pressure, clients bringing SEM in-house and a decline in the prominence of SEM in general. SEM agencies that fail to pivot into broad-based digital agencies will either need to focus exclusively on small business SEM or cease to exist. Why do companies hire agencies? There are two vectors against which companies evaluate agencies: 1) the value that the agency provides; and 2) the scarcity of the agency’s services. For agencies, scarcity is determined by two criteria: a) the number of other agencies that offer the same service; and b) a potential client’s ability to perform the same service in-house. When you plot these factors on a chart, it looks like this: As the chart shows, agencies tend to attract business when they can fulfill a scarce need. As supply increases, agencies lose their leverage with clients, resulting in either price wars Search Engine Land Source

Google: “No current plans” for ads in Gboard

GongTo / Shutterstock.com Google launched Gboard, its keyboard app for iOS, on Thursday, and it is currently sitting in the top spot in the App Store’s chart of free apps. Among other things, Gboard brings Google search into any app with the press of the “G” icon. This, of course, could also mean bringing Google search ads to any app. For example, one can easily envision AdWords search ads extending into these results in the Twitter app for [restaurants near me]. However, a Google Spokesperson tells Search Engine Land, “We have no current plans around ads in Gboard.” “Current plans” leaves a lot of ambiguity, of course. Currently this week? Currently this month or year? It’s nearly impossible to imagine a scenario in which Google would not be looking at this as an eventual ad vehicle. The big argument Google has faced in the age of mobile and the rise of native in-stream ads is that apps are where users spend their time, not Search Engine Land Source

Soon, assign whatever attribution model you want for each conversion type in AdWords

Soon, you’ll be able to assign an attribution model for each conversion type you’ve set up in AdWords. It’s a big change that means last-click will no longer be the default mode of assigning conversion credit in AdWords. Google also announced it is bringing its data-driven attribution model — currently in beta — to AdWords. Later this month, a new drop-down will become available in Conversion settings in AdWords for assigning one of the six attribution models to a conversion. The attribution models are only available for Search campaigns. The data-driven attribution model launched in 2013 and has been available in DoubleClick and Attribution 360 and Analytics 360. The model uses machine learning to assign credit for each interaction along a conversion path. Google says it “considers the number of ad interactions, order of exposure, ad creative, and many other factors to determine which keywords and clicks are the most effective at driving results.” However, the data-driven attribution model will only be available to high-volume Search Engine Land Source

A script for getting granular AdWords account anomaly alerts

Many exciting AdWords scripts have been shared on this site over the past couple of years, from scripts that enable hourly dayparting to ones that update bids based on the weather using machine learning and Google’s Prediction API. I’ve had fun writing some complex scripts like these myself (mine handle bid management and connect inventory with AdWords), but it’s usually my more mundane scripts that get the most response, because let’s face it, more of us are interested in automating the basics and getting those right before we can even afford to spend brain cycles on the more cutting-edge stuff that gets engineers excited. Case in point: Last month, I shared a script for handling the basic account management task of updating budgets every day to ensure the full allotted amount is spent every month. How to make SEO a company-wide habit

A few months ago, the Content Marketing Manager at a client’s organization reached out to me, asking if we could provide his copywriting team with an SEO training session. I was floored! We had been optimizing the majority of their content for years, but they had never shown any interest in doing it on their own. Why the sudden change? A new VP of marketing had come on board with search experience and wanted to make SEO a priority across the entire marketing department. After years of trying to get them engaged, all it took was a new person to come in and make it happen. And now, it’s become the norm for individuals within the department to consult us on SEO matters. Amazing! Coincidentally, this all occurred as I was reading The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, a book that looks at habits, how those habits are formed and how businesses have used the habits of their consumers to Search Engine Land Source

Copy & paste comes to Bing Ads UI

Bing Ads has rolled out a handy update, bringing the ability to copy and paste keywords and ads within the web interface. You’ll now be able to add keywords and ads to new campaigns and ad groups without having to either use Bing Ads Editor or enter everything in manually in the UI. Just as in Google AdWords, there are now new copy and past options under the “Edit” tab on the Campaigns tab. Control+C and Control+V also work. Once you copy the ads or keywords you want to add, just navigate to the ad group where you want to include them and paste. You can opt to pause them once added and choose whether to include the keyword bids and destination URLs. The post Copy & paste comes to Bing Ads UI appeared first on Search Engine Land. A Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed with Search Engine Land that they are indeed testing displaying tweets, Twitter results, in the Bing search results pages. This was first reported this morning by Ruben Gomez during his testing. Bing is using a carousel box, similar to how Google shows tweets in their search results, to include these tweets in the Bing search listing page. Here is a picture from Ruben: This is what it looks without the Twitter results: A Microsoft spokesperson told us, “We’re constantly updating and refining the Bing search experience. Google is celebrating moms today with a Mother’s Day doodle illustrated by doodler Sophia Diao. “As we get older, we forget how heavily we once relied on our mothers and mother-figures. Today’s doodle for Mother’s Day harkens back to a time in my youth when following Mom around was all I knew,” writes Diao on the Google Doodle blog. The Mother’s Day-themed logo leads to a search for “What day is Mother’s Day 2016?” and includes the usual sharing icon so that users can post the doodle on their social pages. 5 ways SEO and PR should be working together

With a newly integrated and and constantly evolving digital landscape, marketing and communication channels are working together more closely than ever before. Granted, you’ll see variations in how well this is actually executed based on your business structure and the channels themselves, but the fact is: Channels can’t exist in silos. An easy collaboration exists between PR and SEO, now that good content and outreach is an integral part of SEO success — and those two things are something PR knows all too well. So how can these two different teams help each other reach the same business goal? Education Let’s start with the most obvious: education. It’s easy to get wrapped up in your specialty bubble, so when you start working with folks on other teams with other specialties, it’s just as easy to forget that they don’t know what you know. PR professionals aren’t taught about the impact that online earned media can have on SEO and keyword rankings, so before you dive in Search Engine Land Source

5 reasons to keep doing mobile SEO even though ads are everywhere

“Look,” says your boss, directing your attention to the Google search results on her iPhone. She just searched on “life insurance quotes,” and the organic listings are nowhere to be seen. She actually has to scroll down past the third ad before she gets to the first organic listing. “Why would we continue to pay any attention to organic search on mobile when Google is only showing ads?” she says. “I just read a report from a prominent agency that said organic search visits were down seven percent year over year in Q1, as increased monetization of mobile results is pushing more traffic to paid listings, and that mobile traffic share has been flat for organic search in the past year, but it is up 10 points for paid search. Let’s just shift the budget into paid and be done with it.” If you’re interested in growing your traffic overall, you should resist that suggestion. Changing domain names in 2016: 10 easily overlooked steps that can save SEO

I help a lot of companies with the SEO aspects of their website redesigns and CMS migrations. As many webmasters know (or find out through hard experience), both redesigns and migrations can be catastrophic if not handled correctly. Unfortunately, you can run into many gremlins during a migration, from technical problems to botched redirection plans to dropping URLs. And when that happens, you can lose search equity, rankings and traffic. I’ve helped some companies that reached out to me after losing 60 to 70 percent of their traffic based on a botched migration. It’s not pretty, to say the least. But what about simply changing domain names? If you are just moving from one domain name to another, without a redesign or CMS migration, it must be much easier, right? Well, it is easier, but there are still things that can go wrong. And the more moving pieces are involved with your site, the more variables you need to Search Engine Land Source

Son of Siri: Viv aims to go way beyond today’s digital assistants

Alexander Supertramp / Shutterstock.com There’s a confluence of technology advancements that are dramatically changing “search”: mobile, artificial intelligence, big data and natural language processing. From Siri and Alexa to Facebook M and Jibo, voice UIs and virtual assistants are the future. Ahead of its public unveiling on Monday, the Washington Post ran a story on next-generation virtual assistant Viv. Viv could be described as Son of Siri or Siri 2.0, with much more focus on AI and commerce. It’s built by the same people who launched Siri before Apple acquired it, including co-founder Dag Kittlaus. Believe it or not, Siri launched way back in 2009 with the goal of advancing the search experience using a natural language interface and delivering actionable/transactional results rather than a SERP. The Post article uses the example of ordering pizza from a nearby restaurant to showcase Viv’s conversational-transactional potential: “Get me a pizza from Pizz’a Chicago near my office,” one of the engineers said into his Search Engine Land Source

Updated: Google penalizes mobile sites using sneaky redirects

In October 2015, Google warned webmasters not to trick mobile users by redirecting them to an unsuspecting web site. Well, today, Google announced on Google+ and Twitter that they have been “taking action on sites that sneakily redirect mobile users to spammy domains.” Google issued a correction with Search Engine Land that they did not issue any new manual actions recently, that this post on Twitter was just to remind webmasters not to use sneaky redirects. Google wrote, “As mentioned in Webspam Report 2015, spam reports from users are an important part of our spam-fighting efforts. They often help us surface issues that frustrate users – like the trend of websites redirecting mobile users to other, often spammy domains.” Google added, “to combat this trend, we have been taking action on sites that sneakily redirect users in this way.” Sneaky redirects are never a good thing and Google has penalized web sites for directing the user to a Search Engine Land Source

SEO Search Engine Optimization Is Stupid Easy With The Right Tools

SEO Search Engine Optimization Is Stupid Easy With The Right Tools Search Engine Optimimizaiton, also known as SEO can be very confusing and very challenging. If you watch my channel you know this is something I admittedly struggle with. My SEO skills with eBay, Amazon, and Youtube are awesome. On the other hand Google SEO and ranking websites is something I’ve always struggled with. I recently found a tool called SmartSERP. They offer a FREE 14 day trial. I decided to signup over the weekend and I’m over the top in love with the program. I’m still in my trial period but I’m fairly certain I’ll buy the basic program for a month and continue using it. I’ve signed up for SEO tools in the past but have either found them unimpressive, or too confusing to use. Most all of them basically require you to know the keywords your trying to rank for and then allow you to see how well your ranking. What I really love about SmartSERP is that all you have to do is plugin your website, and they will tell you all the keywords your ranking for, the monthly searches, and show you the link to your post. You can find terms you didn’t even know you were ranking for and with those areas which your already competitive you can even try to up your rankings further. I was surprised to find I’m ranking number 2 overall in Google for several search terms I would have never even thought to search. In this video I show you the backend of my SmartSERP account and show you for my RulesForRebels Blog some of the top terms I’m ranking for and how I plan on improving their ranking. Check it out!!!

Content and SEO: Optimization from creation to conversion

By 2019, it is predicted that content marketing will become a $300-billion industry. However, this content will have limited value unless it is actually found by the right audience, optimized to achieve maximum impact and measured in relation to business results. Ensuring your content is search-engine-friendly and optimized across the buyer’s journey is critical to the success of both content and SEO teams. Major search algorithm updates, such as Google’s Panda and Penguin, are focused on delivering users the highest-quality results and the most relevant content. Brands with a solid content marketing strategy — focused around people, process and technology — that also optimize for visibility across search engines are rewarded with increased search performance in the form of traffic, conversions and revenue. A major challenge for many organizations is optimizing content for search during the content creation process and then replicating it, at scale, across large websites and content management systems. Bing Bad Ads Report: 250 million ads rejected, 150K advertisers banned in 2015

In the constant battle against bad actors, including scammers and hackers, Bing says it rejected 250 million ads, blocked 50,000 sites and banned 150,000 advertisers in 2015. The usual suspects continue to take up the bulk of attention. Tech support scams, a perennial problem, plague the system. Bing says it blocked more than 15 million ads and 25,000 sites promoting shady third-party tech support services. Bing has relatively lax trademark usage policies, but says it still dismissed more than 50 million ads last year for trademark infringements. Phishing attacks and ads for pharma and counterfeit goods were also at the top of the list. Google sent 4 million messages about search spam last year, saw 33% increase in clean-up requests

Google announced today the latest in their efforts to clean up the search results through webspam techniques. Google explained that in 2015 they saw a 180-percent increase in websites being hacked compared to 2014 and also saw “an increase in the number of sites with thin, low-quality content.” To combat that, Google released their hacked spam algorithm in October 2015, which resulted in removing “the vast majority” of those issues. They also sent out more than 4.3 million messages to webmasters to notify them of manual actions on their sites; that is a ton of manual notices. With that, they saw a 33-percent increase in the number of sites that went through the reconsideration process. So it is clearly important to make sure to verify your website in the Google Search Console so that you can be alerted of any issues Google finds on your site.
