Merkle’s early data on expanded text ad CTRs: Results are mixed

AmsStudio / Shutterstock.com Merkle has released early results on click-through rates of expanded text ads relative to standard text ads in its Q2 Digital Marketing Report. The agency began participating in the expanded text ads beta in April and analyzed the longer ad format’s impact on click-through rate (CTR) across thousands of ad groups. When Google first announced that expanded text ads (ETAs) were coming, the company touted as much as a 20-percent lift in click-through rates on expanded text ads. Merkle looked at ad performance for non-brand traffic and brand traffic. For non-brand queries, early results showed expanded text ads drove a 16-percent lift for the median site and ad group on desktop. Mobile phones, however, saw just a four-percent bump in CTR and tablets an eight-percent increase overall. Merkle added that individual results did vary widely, with several advertisers seeing lower CTRs from expanded texts on non-brand traffic from some devices. AdWords gains 3 new cross-device attribution reports

Google is introducing three new reports on cross-device activity along with a reorganization of the Attribution section under the Tools menu in AdWords. With 6 out of 10 online conversions in the US starting on one device and ending on another, according to a Google/Ipsos study, the new reports are designed to help marketers track cross-device conversion paths, including those that include search ad clicks from more than one device in a conversion path. The new cross-device activity reports: Devices: an overview of the cross-device activity in your account. Assisting Devices: shows assist levels  and values by each device type — mobile, tablet, desktop. Device Paths: the top conversion paths for visitors that used more than one device before converting. You’ll notice in the screenshot example above that the existing conversion, path and click analysis reports are now rolled up under their own sections within the Attribution reporting menu. The new reports and layout will be rolling out over the next several weeks. Local search provider YP has introduced a new location data offering it calls “Audience Cartography.” While designed for mobile display (mostly in-app) advertising, the company incorporates local search intent data into the mix of signals it uses for audience targeting. Google iOS app gets better listening skills for voice searches & newly added features

AmsStudio / Shutterstock.com Google rolled out a number of new updates to its iOS app today, including the ability to better hear voice searches conducted in noisy environments. In addition to being a better listener, Google’s iOS app will also save recently visited pages. According to the update notice, tapping on the ‘recents’ icon (found on the top right corner of the homepage, or to the right of the ‘G’ button) will return pages visited during the previous seven days. Local search results for hotels and gas stations have also been updated. Hotel searches will now include information about amenities like wifi, gym, pool and laundry services, while gas station search results may include gas prices, as shown here: There’s also a newly added ‘Forward’ button to move back and forth between pages for better navigation. Google sunsetting AdWords Converted Clicks in September

So long, “converted clicks.” Google is getting rid of its original metric for tracking conversion events that debuted in AdWords in 2001 and is fully replacing it with “Conversions.” Conversions and converted clicks have coexisted in AdWords for several years now, but Google has long been urging advertisers to use the more advanced Conversions measurement. Conversions supports multiple attribution models beyond last click, cross-device conversions and store visits. Google announced on Monday that support for Converted clicks will end after September 2016. Advertisers using Target CPA or Enhanced CPC with Converted clicks should switch to using Conversions by September 21. Google says it will email affected advertisers a migration tool for making the switch, but it’s easy to make the switch manually as well. In AdWords, select Conversion under Tools, and switch to Conversions under the Settings section. For reporting, select the Conversions columns instead of the Converted clicks columns. Also starting in September, cross-device conversions will automatically be grouped in the Conversions Search Engine Land Source

Google’s Smart Bidding will soon include ability to set Target CPA by device in AdWords

On Monday, Google introduced Smart Bidding, a new umbrella name for automated bidding strategies including Target CPA, Target ROAS and Enhanced CPC in AdWords and DoubleClick Search. Coming soon is the ability to set different Target CPA goals by device in search and display campaigns. This will roll out to all advertisers in the next few weeks. Powered by machine learning, Smart Bidding “can factor in millions of signals to determine the optimal bid, and it continually refines models of your conversion performance at different bid levels,” said Anthony Chavez, product management director of search ads at Google, in the announcement. Smart Bidding can be set to optimize for conversions or conversion value programmatically in real time. It takes into account signals in AdWords such as browser and language, in addition to manual bid adjustments for location and device. Other signals include location intent and similar product attributes. Google will be adding more signals, such as seasonality and price competitiveness over time. For some time, attackers have leveraged Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques in order to promote malicious web content targeting end users. Google has researched this phenomenon and recently announced that fake antivirus pages now represent 60% of the malware associated with popular search terms and these attacks continue to grow in prevalence. The Zscaler Research Team has also shown that some popular search terms from Google Trends, have malicious links to fake antivirus pages in up to 90% of all links within the first 100 results returned. Attackers have even managed to display malicious links as the first result for popular searches. Moreover, we have found that more than 50% of popular searches contain at least one malicious spam SEO link in the first 10 pages. Is Google doing enough to protect its users? In this talk, we’ll debate that question. Data exploration from: An experiment in trying to predict Google rankings

Introduction Over the last few months, we have been working with a company named Statec (a data science company from Brazil) to engineer features for predictive algorithms. One of the initial considerations in working with predictive algorithms is picking relevant data to train them on. We set out quite naively to put together a list of webpage features that we thought may offer some value. Our goal was simply to see if from available features, we could get close to predicting the rank of a webpage in Google. We learned soon into this process that we had to put blinders on to data that was unreachable and hope for the best with what we had. The following is an analysis of the data we collected, how we collected it and useful correlations derived from the data. Is your HTTPS setup causing SEO issues?

Google has been making the push for sites to move to HTTPS, and many folks have already started to include this in their SEO strategy. Recently at SMX Advanced, Gary Illyes from Google said that 34 percent of the Google search results are HTTPS. That’s more than I personally expected, but it’s a good sign, as more sites are becoming secured. However, more and more, I’m noticing a lot of sites have migrated to HTTPS but have not done it correctly and may be losing out on the HTTPS ranking boost. Some have also created more problems on their sites by not migrating correctly. HTTPS post-migration issues One of the common issues I noticed after a site has migrated to HTTPS is that they do not set the HTTPS site version as the preferred one and still have the HTTP version floating around. Soon, import call conversion data into AdWords for better attribution & optimization

Currently, advertisers measure the success of click-to-call ads and website phone clicks by call length — advertisers set the call length minimum before a conversion is counted based on the time a typical successful inbound call lasts. With imported call conversions, advertisers will be able to attribute actual closed deals, sales or other conversion actions generated by ads down to the keyword level. Update: Initially I wrote that the limitation with imported call conversions is that advertisers can’t import the actual value of a deal generated by each call. Google’s ban on payday & high-interest loan ads going into effect now

In May, Google announced that ads promoting payday loans that require repayment within 60 days and loans with interest rates above 35 percent would no longer be accepted or displayed starting July 13. Yet many people have noticed that payday loans are still showing up in Google search results, a week after the ban was supposed to start. Google’s execution of the ban was delayed, but it is now rolling out. The company posted an update to the ad policies in the AdWords help center covering personal loans, high-APR (annual percentage rate) and personal loans on Wednesday afternoon. Note, the policy on high-APR personal loans affects US advertisers only. The policy for short-term personal loans is global. The policy includes the following reasons for ad disapproval: Payday loans: “Personal loans which require repayment in full in 60 days or less from the date the loan is issued (we refer to these as ‘Short-term personal loans’). Google reports more than 40K government requests for user data during 2nd half of 2015

Google has released its latest transparency report update, reporting 40,677 requests for user data from governments around the world. According to the latest numbers, there were over 5,000 more requests during the second half of 2015 compared to January through June of 2015, with 81,311 total users/accounts specified. Requests for user data by reporting period Of the more than 100 countries listed on the transparency report, the United States had the most government requests for user data and account information at 12,523, followed by Germany with 7,491 requests and France with 4,174 requests. Google gave itself a pat on the back on its latest Google Public Policy blog post, noting it had led the charge for global transparency around government surveillance laws. Google to launch new voter registration search tools & live-stream conventions on YouTube

Google announced today it would be launching new voter registration search tools this coming Monday, July 18. According to the post on Google’s official blog, searches for [register to vote] and similar queries will deliver a “detailed state-by-state guide” covering how to register, general requirements to vote, and registration deadlines. While the new voter registration search tools are not live yet, Google shared the following image demonstrating how they work: In addition to the new election-related search tools, Google says searches for the upcoming Republican and Democratic National Conventions on the Google App will surface event info along with speaker lineups and that both conventions will be broadcast via a live stream on YouTube. Mobile brand CPCs on Google are climbing, finds Merkle

The average mobile cost per click (CPC) for brand keywords started to shoot higher starting in the last week of June. In a blog post Friday, Merkle’s Senior Research Analyst, Andy Taylor, wrote that the median Merkle advertiser has seen mobile CPCs rise 25 to 30 percent above where they were in early May. Tablet and desktop costs, meanwhile, continued to fluctuate within normal ranges. Mobile traffic share has also remained steady through this period, on average, for Merkle advertisers. Last year, Merkle saw a jump in brand CPCs across all devices, beginning in the first quarter of 2015. By the end of the second quarter, brand CPCs for the median advertiser were 22 percent higher than the historical average of the previous four years. If you’re seeing similar increases in your own accounts, you may want to gradually lower mobile brand bids, as Merkle says many advertisers did last year in response to the CPC increases. Report: US Google search spend was flat, but mobile spend jumped 55 percent in Q2

In Q2 2016, Google paid search spend in the US dipped slightly year over year among IgnitionOne customers. Slower spend growth was driven largely by a greater click share coming from mobile, where CPCs are lower. Smartphone ad spend grew 55 percent year over year; smartphone CPCs remained half of desktop. The Q2 decline of one percent in spend was an improvement over the five-percent drop of Q1. Across the advertiser set, impressions increased 13 percent with more mobile inventory available, and clicks rose 10 percent year over year. Smartphone impressions rose 46 percent, and clicks jumped 69 percent compared to the previous year. Click-through rates rose 16 percent on smartphones and fell 23 percent on tablets. The spend drop last quarter was driven primarily by advertisers in the finance and travel sectors, with spend off seven percent and 12 percent respectively compared to the previous year. In May, Google announced it would soon give retailers running Local Inventory Ads, another way for searchers to find out if a product is available in their local store. That functionality is now live, with retailers like Ikea, Macy’s and REI participating. The new “Search items at this store” feature is available both in the Knowledge Panel and Google Maps results for participating retailers. Here’s what a Macy’s store listing looks like in desktop search: Nicolai Helling spotted the feature on a search for Ikea Waldorf Germany. Google has long featured star ratings in search ads and organic listings. In a new test, the eye-catching yellow stars and rating number are replaced by a percentage of positive ratings. The desktop search results were sent to Search Engine Land by Peter Lavelle, digital marketer for Pure Fx in the UK. Report: EU responding to Google antitrust search-quality defense with new objections

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, regulators at the European Commission (EC) are preparing a “supplementary statement of objections” in the existing shopping search antitrust matter. The EC filed the original “statement of objections” (formal antitrust charges) regarding Google’s alleged abuse of market power in early 2015. While the EC focused exclusively on shopping search in the original charges, it is widely expected that shopping is a kind of template for other potential “search bias” cases against Google. If the EC succeeds, nearly identical charges will likely follow in other vertical search areas such as local, maps and potentially travel. The supplementary statement reportedly allows the EC to address arguments and claims made in Google’s formal response to the EC’s original statement of objections. Bing ads bolsters Keyword Planner targeting and rolls out access to the UK, Canada & Australia

Many paid search marketers will be pleasantly surprised the next time they go to perform keyword research in Bing Ads. Firstly, those in the United Kingdom, Canada & Australia will now have access to Keyword Planner. Secondly, Keyword Planner will have an additional targeting feature to help users find keyword suggestions based off of product categories. Keyword Planner was launched last year and was only available for folks within the United States. Now those in the United Kingdom, Canada & Australia will find Keyword Planner under the ‘Tools’ navigation element in their accounts. Users will also have the ability to show targeting options such as cities, states/provinces and will pull historical search statistics across all of these locations. Stats include average monthly searches, competition, suggested bids, ad impression share and traffic estimates. Google test removes the estimated number of search results

Google seems to be testing removing the estimated number of results found for a specific search query from the top of the search results. Typically, when you do a search on Google, Google will show you the “about” number of results Google found that matched that query. Google is testing removing that on some of their user interface tests. Derek Edmond shared screen shots with me on Twitter showing how it was removed from his view. Google has announced they’ve added a few new features to the Now on Tap service. Google Now on Tap lets Android users bring Google search features to any screen they are looking at with the tap of a button. The new features include the ability to translate text on any page/screen, a new discover button to learn more about what is on your screen and a search by scanning QR codes and bar codes in Search by Image. Translate with Now on Tap Google Now on Tap now lets you translate text on any screen you are viewing. It can be within any app or webpage. Long-press the home button, tap the “Translate this screen” button, and it will translate it instantly for you. Angie’s List is now free: What this change means for your business

In a move that hasn’t attracted a lot of attention online, Angie’s List followed through on their March announcement and removed their paywall last week. Anyone can now become a member without paying the previous ~$40/year fee, and reviews are now accessible by anyone. This change, which did fly under the radar, does have strong implications for the online reputations of many businesses. Angie’s List has always done well in the home services market: think plumbing, landscaping, HVAC, roofing, concrete and the like. And while Angie’s List did have an impact on their reputations, less than one percent of the US population were members, which meant the vast majority of people couldn’t see the rating or reviews posted on a company profile. eBay announced they are now serving over 8 million pages using AMP, Google’s accelerated mobile project initiative. Bing gets smart: adds trivia, quizzes & polls

Bing wants to pull more users via its homepage, and is using trivia to do it. Last month, the site began posting trivia questions in place of “hotspots” on Bing.com. The trivia questions relate to Bing’s image of the day and display when you hover over the graduation cap icon now showing on the homepage. Answering the trivia question will launch a three-question quiz at the top of a search results page for whatever the correct answer is. The quiz interface lists the correct answer, further info on the topic and the option to answer the next question. In addition to the daily quizzes, Bing also has a weekly news and trends quiz that it posts on Fridays which can be found in the “Popular Now” carousel that runs across the bottom of its homepage.
