Google launches “In Apps,” a way to find content within apps on Android phones

Google has announced a new way to locate content within apps on Android phones. “In Apps” is a search tab that allows this, a new addition to the Google app for Android. Google shared the news on its Inside Search blog today, along with an illustration of how it works: Currently, Google says the feature works with Gmail, Spotify and YouTube. It’s promising that support for more apps will happen in the coming months, including for Facebook Messenger, LinkedIn, Evernote, Google Keep, Glide and Todoist. App search is local to the phone, so that if you’re not connected, you can still locate information. That’s important, because it highlights how this type of “searching within apps” is different from what Google already supports. Billions served: PC search is down but query volume is way up for Google

Writing about search market share on the desktop is now a bit like writing about old cars. It’s sort of interesting but less and less relevant. For reasons that remain mysterious, comScore has neglected to provide a unified view of the search marketplace — despite the fact that likely between 55 and 60 percent of search queries now come from mobile devices. July desktop search rankings in the US reflect the following distribution, according to comScore: For comparison, the following are the comScore numbers from July 2015: Google Sites — 64.0% Microsoft Sites — 20.4% Yahoo Sites — 12.7% Ask Network — 1.8% AOL — 1.2% Essentially all parties have lost incremental share except for Bing, which has gained 1.5 points. Depending on your perspective, this could be spun as trivial or part of Bing’s long slow climb to meaningful desktop search market share. PC query volumes peaked on the desktop in 2013. However, in mobile, Google commands roughly 94 percent of the market according to Search Engine Land Source

Test points to likely influence of click-through rate on search rankings

There has been a lot written about click-through rate (CTR) as it relates to SEO. Some say that it really doesn’t matter. Others say that it is very possible it does. Reading articles, experiments and case studies is great, but we’re always eager to test things out for ourselves. We maintain a bunch of test websites for just that purpose. And so we decided to run a CTR test on one of the websites we hadn’t touched in a long while. The hope was to gather some evidence of our own. If you’re looking for a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled test, this ain’t it. But if you’re looking for more anecdotal evidence suggesting how the algorithm might react to clicks based on an experiment of n=1, this is it. With Panda in stealth mode, why Google’s quality updates should be on your algorithmic radar [Part 1]

In May of 2015, I uncovered a major algorithm update that I called “Phantom 2.” It ended up being a huge update that impacted many websites across the web globally. I’ll explain why it was named “2” and not “1” soon. Google first denied there was an update in early May 2015, but then finally explained that they did indeed roll one out. They said it was a “change to its core ranking algorithm with how it assesses quality.” And with Google always looking to surface the highest-quality, most relevant information for users, that statement was incredibly important. This led the folks at Search Engine Land to call the May 2015 update Google’s “Quality Update.” (I still like Phantom, but hey, I’m biased!) Note, and this is important: I called the update “Phantom” simply because it was a mysterious one. Google has not officially named the update Phantom, and from what I gather, they don’t like the name very Search Engine Land Source

Bing search app for iOS & Android gets new music, video & map features

Bing has released new updates to its search app for iOS and Android, adding new music and video features, along with more map options. The updated version 6.7.2 Bing search app will now play a video without sound directly in search results with the lyrics listed below the video — a feature that has been available on Bing desktop. The app also includes a new Music page listing trending songs and artists. According to a report on the Android Community website, Bing’s search app can also give the title to a song being played: “In case you’re looking for a specific song, you can use the Bing Search app by typing the name of the song or if something is playing, it will tell you what it is.” In addition to updates around music, users can add movie titles to their Netflix and Amazon Prime watch lists from the app’s Movies page. AMP now supports A/B testing and other experiments

Now you can run experiments, such as A/B tests, using AMP pages. This was announced on the AMP blog. “[W]e’ve launched a new AMP component that allows you to conduct user experience experiments on an AMP page,” Google said. Within the code, you can specify how much traffic to send to which experiment. The element allows you to specify all experiment behaviors via a JSON configuration. Plus, through this new configuration, it will expose additional analytics reporting attributions so you can collect enough data to decide which experiment works best. Let’s begin by quickly talking about what an internal link is. An internal link is a link from a webpage to another resource on the same domain. That resource may be another webpage (what we’ll be focusing on here) but can also include links to media files, downloads and more. Here are two primary considerations we need to make when thinking about our website’s internal link structure: Users. Obviously, you should first consider when thinking about where to place links on a page and where they should lead. We want to get users from where they are to where they want to go (or where we want them to go) as quickly and easily as possible. Search engines. Google dropping “Mobile-friendly” label from search results

Kashin / Shutterstock.com Google says it is doing away with the mobile-friendly label that appears in search results. That does not mean that the mobile-friendly algorithm is dead, it just means Google is removing the label. In its announcement, Google said that “85% of all pages in the mobile search results” now are mobile-friendly by Google’s criteria and thus they decided to declutter the search results by removing the label. The label launched officially in November 2014. If you do not see your site with the mobile-friendly label, there is no need to worry. You can use Google’s mobile-friendly testing tool and/or check your mobile usability report in the Google Search Console. Google warns it will crack down on “intrusive interstitials” in January

Google has announced that it will begin cracking down on “intrusive interstitials” on January 10, 2017, because this type of ad “can be problematic on mobile devices where screens are often smaller.” Google will be potentially penalizing — i.e., lowering the rankings — of these web pages. Google said “pages where content is not easily accessible to a user on the transition from the mobile search results may not rank as highly.” Google explained which types of interstitials are going to be problematic, including: Showing a popup that covers the main content, either immediately after the user navigates to a page from the search results, or while they are looking through the page. Displaying a standalone interstitial that the user has to dismiss before accessing the main content. Using a layout where the above-the-fold portion of the page appears similar to a standalone interstitial, but the original content has been inlined underneath the fold. OpenStreetMap (OSM) has launched an effort to build an open-source version of Google Street View, called (not surprisingly) OpenStreetView. The hope is to use crowdsourcing to generate street-level photography for OSM on a global basis. To do this, OSM supporter Telenav has built Android and iOS apps for those who want to capture images for upload while driving. There’s some technical complexity to recording and uploading images. Thus it’s really not accessible to general users; the project is for “mappers” and mapping enthusiasts. To my knowledge, there are no incentives to participate beyond a leaderboard and/or a desire to see the project built. While a long shot, it’s quite possible that OpenStreetView will succeed over the long term, given the history and unlikely success of OSM itself. However, it will take years for the coverage to build up and become meaningful for a global user base. They did this back in December 2014, and we know Google is constantly testing user interfaces, so this should come as no surprise. Dan Smullen shared a screen shot with us on Twitter showing this off. We can personally not replicate this, but here is that screen shot: We have emailed Google for a comment about this, but we suspect it will be the line about Google constantly testing and experimenting with new features, layouts and designs. Google Local Business Cards or Posts about to roll out to ‘thousands’ of SMBs

In March, Google started showing “Local Business Cards” as part of the Google Posts system. This allows content providers or businesses or candidates to control the content that appears in the carousel near the top of search results. Below is an example from the March experimental launch, for Healthy Choice Massage. Now, according to information obtained by Mike Blumenthal, Google will dramatically expand availability of Google Local Posts from a “few dozen” to “thousands” of small businesses. Google Posts was created with mobile users in mind but they display on PCs as well. Google’s intent is to allow the business owner or marketer (or candidate) to communicate directly with users in search results, including content or information that the Knowledge Panel doesn’t allow. Like Moz, Raven Tools refocuses on its first love: search

Yesterday, Seattle-based Moz announced it was laying off more than a quarter of its staff and refocusing the company on “what we love and what our customers value from us: search.” At the same time, Nashville-based Raven Tools has announced it is similarly refocusing on its original specialty of search optimization, by releasing a completely rebuilt, standalone version of its Site Auditor tool. It is designed to improve SEO by spidering and then identifying website problems at a code level, allowing the recommendations to be quickly shared for team members to fix. Co-founder and president Jon Henshaw told me that when the company was originally founded in 2007 as a marketing agency, its first software development was oriented around search engine optimization. Moz trims product line to focus on search, lays off 28% of staff

Moz has announced they are refocusing their toolset platform to focus on search. That means they are no longer going to offer the Moz Content or Followerwonk tools and that they are laying off 28 percent of their workforce. Sarah Bird, the CEO of Moz, said “after a lot of analysis and soul searching, we decided to radically simplify our strategy to re-focus on what we love and what our customers value from us: search.” She said this focus will help the company build better and great search tools, which they were founded on and continue to be most well-known for. The sad part is that 28 percent of the Moz staff will be let go. Many of those people are people our community has grown to love. Google adds new state-by-state voting guide for “how to vote” searches

After launching “how to register” voter registration tools last month, Google has now added a new state-by-state “how to vote” guide to its arsenal of voting tools. In anticipation of the November elections, Google searches for “how to vote” now surfaces a “2016 Election: How to Vote” box with “How to,” “Requirements” and “When to vote” tabs that list information like voter ID requirements, deadlines, mail-in ballots and early voting procedures. In addition to the state-by-state voting guide, Google also shared search trends from the last four years, showing how “voter registration” searches have changed since the last election in 2012. “In fact, compared to the same time four years ago, nationwide searches for voter registration are up 190 percent nationwide,” writes product manager Emily Moxley on Google’s Inside Search blog. Google is improving the integration of Report Editor into the AdWords experience. The next time you opt to download a report from AdWords, you may notice an option to “Open in Report Editor.” Spotted by Kim Clinkunbroomer of Philly Marketing Labs, the option is available at the campaign, ad group and keyword levels of an account. Note, you’ll have to allow pop-ups for the report to open in Report Editor, which opens in a separate tab. Google officially throttling Keyword Planner data for low spending AdWords accounts

Earlier this week some marketers noticed that Keyword Planner data was displaying ranged data instead of precise search volume. The ranges were wildly broad with results like “100K-1M” and “1M+”. Some wondered whether this was merely a glitch or if this was a calculated measure that favored higher spending AdWords advertisers. Today, Google confirmed the latter. At the end of June, Keyword Planner was acting up and many users got the message that they needed to have an active AdWords account in order to see the data. This of course drew the ire of users everywhere. Last month a Google spokesperson confirmed with Search Engine Land that users do not have to have an active campaign to use Keyword Planner. However, just 13 days later and now it appears that you do need an active campaign for full data and that advertisers cannot have a “lower monthly spend”. Want to have your “critic review” of a local business perhaps appear in relation to it within Google search? Today, Google’s announced that any publisher can apply to participate. Last year, Google launched the “Critic Reviews” feature for movies, TV shows and books. Last week, Google announced it was now available for local businesses, such as restaurants. How the “Critic Reviews” feature looks For example, a search for the San Francisco restaurant Gary Danko brings up a “Critic reviews” section within the Knowledge Graph panel for the restaurant on desktop: On mobile devices — which is how most people search on Google these days — the section gets much more prominent placement Who gets to be listed in Critic Reviews? Bing to censor Bing.com in the EU for Right To Be Forgotten searches

Bing announced today it has updated its policy around Right To Be Forgotten requests in the EU. According to the announcement, Right To Be Forgotten material in the EU will be censored even on Bing.com, a change from its past policy around RTBF requests. Previously, Bing removed material from its country-specific versions such as Bing.fr for France, or Bing.co.uk for the United Kingdom. However, people in those countries who went to Bing.com would still find Right to be Forgotten material. With the policy updates, that is no longer the case. Going forward, in addition to this practice, Bing will also use location-based signals (e.g., IP addresses) to delist the relevant URL on all versions of Bing, including Bing.com, for any user accessing Bing from the European country where the request originated. For example, if someone in France successfully requests delisting of a URL on Bing, in addition to delisting that URL from all applicable European versions of Bing, Bing will Search Engine Land Source

Confirmed: New AdWords interface rolling out to more users

In March of this year, Google announced a sweeping change to the interface of AdWords, a product that hadn’t had a significant facelift in quite some time. Yesterday, a few AdWords users were surprised to see the new UI showing when they hopped into their accounts. Today, Google has confirmed that the interface is rolling out to more AdWords users. Yatin Mulay of Zen Online Marketing logged on to see the above new tab-less interface (with data redacted). He went on to state that some features were hard to find in the new interface and that it was a “radical” change. In regard to the new interface surfacing, a Google Representative has confirmed that the interface is rolling out to more users. Previously, Google has stated: Through 2016 and into 2017, we’ll continue to build out this new AdWords experience, and invite advertisers along the way to try it out and provide feedback. Yelp, TripAdvisor: Google’s mobile ‘best-of lists’ hide our content

Last week, Google announced local “best-of lists” content will start to show in its mobile app search results. On August 4, the company posted, “Starting today in the US, when you search on your Google app for the best spots to eat and drink, you’ll have access to reviews from top critics and best-of lists from reputable publishers.” The idea is to offer more local search content to mobile users on the go. Below is an example of what it looks like. However, Google’s rivals don’t think this improves the user experience. They see it as anticompetitive. Recode captured tweets from Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman and TripAdvisor CEO Stephen Kaufer that were highly critical of the move. Survey: Local search marketing top channel for SMBs, but many not tracking ROI

A recent survey found local search is the most popular form of online marketing for US small businesses (SMBs). In this context, “local search” includes SEO and PPC. Non-local SEO and PPC are also broken out separately. Source: RevLocal, July 2016 (n=602 US SMBs) The survey was conducted by digital agency RevLocal in July among roughly 600 SMBs. Interestingly, most of these respondents expressed a belief that their digital marketing efforts were effective (62 percent) or very effective (13 percent). Yet paradoxically, a substantial minority (44 percent) said they weren’t doing any ROI tracking. First appearance of ads in Local Pack found in UK mobile search result

At the SMX Advanced Local Workshop in June, Google confirmed that ads would be appearing in the Local Pack. At the time it wasn’t clear when this would roll out or whether the ad would replace one of the listings or become a fourth position in the Pack. However, yesterday Ryan Scollon spotted a Local Pack with three organic listings and one ad at the top in a UK mobile search: The screenshot shown at the Local Workshop at SMX Advanced in Seattle had one ad and two organic listings in contrast to the above. We reached out to Google for a comment but have yet to hear back. My guess is that Google is still testing formats and this isn’t yet a formal roll out. We’ll update this post if we get any statements or new information from Google. If others are seeing these new Four Packs (4Packs) in North America or other markets, let us know. Google My Business drops ability to edit business description field

Google has removed the ability for businesses to edit their introduction/description field in the Google My Business portal. Google posted a note about this in the featured document. This feature was removed on August 1, 2016 and Google wrote: The Introduction/Description field is no longer editable in Google My Business. It only displays to users in Google+, and may still be edited there. Editing of attributes, coming soon to all Google My Business views, will be an improved way to describe your business to users on Google Search and Maps. I checked my Google+ profile for my company and this is the introductory section: Some say this was removed because businesses used it to stuff spam and keywords in the field. This has not been shown on Google Maps or the Google local knowledge box for some time now. But now you can no longer edit it in the Google My Business portal. Google said you can edit it in Google+. Link profile analysis: How to prevent penalties by being proactive

As most SEOs know, links are still extremely important to ranking highly in the Google search results. In fact, a recent study performed by Backlinko showed that “the number of domains linking to a page correlated with rankings more than any other factor.” Thus, it makes sense for most all large companies with a significant website presence to implement a regular link pruning schedule. At ymarketing, we call our process of link pruning “link remediation.” The normal way most sites handle a penalty is reactionary in nature. The SEO wakes up one day and finds the scariest of emails an SEO can receive in their inbox: They have been hit with a manual penalty. AMP breaks out of news into the main Google search results

Google is taking Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) beyond the “Top Stories” and into the main organic mobile search results. Today the company has announced a developer preview (g.co/ampdemo), with a general Google.com roll out to follow in the near future. What this means is that mobile search users will soon start to content in search results with the AMP lightning bolt logo, indicating the content is available in the mobile format — comparable to “mobile friendly.” I spoke with Google’s VP of Engineering David Besbris yesterday. He told me that AMP pages will not receive a ranking boost, though Google has suggested in the past load time and page speed are (or will become) mobile ranking factors. Besbris explained, however, that where there are two identical pages, one AMP and one mobile-friendly, Google will serve the AMP page.
