How Google is tackling fake news, and why it should not do it alone

Fact-checking and preventing fake news from appearing in search results will remain a big priority for search engines in 2017. Following the US election and Brexit, increased focus is being placed on how social networks and search engines can avoid showing “fake news” to users. However, this is a battle that search engines cannot — and more fundamentally, should not — fight alone. With search engines providing a key way people consume information, it is obviously problematic if they can both decide what the truth is and label content as the truth. This power might not be abused now, but there is no guarantee of the safe governance of such organizations in the future. Here are five key ways Google can deal (or already is dealing) with fake news right now. They are: Manually reviewing websites Algorithmically demoting fake news Removing incentives to create fake news Signaling when content has been fact-checked Funding fact-checking organizations 1. Manually reviewing websites Google does have the power to determine who does and does Search Engine Land Source

SEO without SERPs is here with Google Assistant, Home and Amazon Echo. Here’s how to survive.

On the first full day that we had a Google Home in our house, we interacted with it 473 times over the course of the day. Four hundred of those were my two-year-old asking it to play “Cherry Bomb” by The Runaways, followed by his mother or me interrupting with, “Hey Google! Stop!” (Look, I love that song, too, but enough is enough, you know?) The point is, watching the way that my family interacts with the device, and how often they interact with it, I’m more inclined to believe the forecast that sales of Amazon Echo and Google Home type devices will go from 1.8 million this year to 15.1 million in 2020. Have you seen this demo video from Google I/O?: It really can do all of those things, like turn on your lights and help you plan your day. How do our biases impact PPC performance?

I’ve come to believe that the essence of PPC management can be boiled down to two things: Never let one thing (keyword research, bid management, A/B testing ad copy and so on) take up so much of your attention that you let something else slip. What you did yesterday probably needs to be changed, and failing to adapt your methodology is as bad as having an empty “Change History” log. As you gain more experience in PPC, you start to develop patterns and favorite tactics out of necessity. We bring tools that worked in the past to each new campaign or ad account. People are paying us for our past experiences and how these experiences translate into future potential. But are the things we believe about PPC the very things holding us back from fully optimizing an account? I will absolutely agree with anyone out there who feels that the biases we develop in fact make us much more efficient in management. However, I Search Engine Land Source

Thanksgiving 2016 Google doodle celebrates holiday with American folk art imagery

Google’s doodle team used American folk art imagery for today’s Thanksgiving Day doodle, depicting simple patterns and shapes for the image. “Evocative of American folk art, with quilt-like patterning and simple shapes, today’s Doodle, rendered in a rich harvest-colored palette, is an ode to this season of togetherness,” says Google’s Doodle Blog. Google offered a brief history lesson on the holiday, telling of its origin nearly 400 years ago when American settlers met the Native American Wampanoag tribe: It was 1620 in Plymouth, Massachusetts when Mayflower colonists and the Wampanoag forged a partnership of necessity. Decimated by an epidemic and wary of the mightier Narragansett, their nearby enemies, the Wampanoag and the newcomers become allies. The pilgrims were unfamiliar with Massachusetts’ natural resources and ill-equipped for survival – but Tisquantum, an English-speaking Patuxet Wampanoag, taught them how to hunt, gather shellfish, and plant corn, beans, and squash. The trouble with truth

Since the election, there’s been a lot of discussion about fake news and its ability to sway masses into potentially false perceptions. Clearly, creating false perceptions in mass media is a dangerous thing, and it can sway public opinion and policy greatly. But what about search engines and other content distributors? Even before the US election, German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned that search engine algorithms, “when they are not transparent, can lead to a distortion of our perception, they can shrink our expanse of information.” What responsibility, then, does a search engine have to produce truthful information? Is Pluto a planet? Getting at truth can be tough because not everything is black and white, especially in certain subjects. Take, for example, good old Pluto. Many of us grew up learning that Pluto is a planet. Then, in 2006, astronomers ruled that it was no longer a planet. But in the last few years, Pluto’s planetary designation seems to have been in dispute. As I Search Engine Land Source

Fun with robots.txt

One of the most boring topics in technical SEO is robots.txt. Rarely is there an interesting problem needing to be solved in the file, and most errors come from not understanding the directives or from typos. The general purpose of a robots.txt file is simply to suggest to crawlers where they can and cannot go. Basic parts of the robots.txt file User-agent — specifies which robot. Disallow — suggests the robots not crawl this area. Allow — allows robots to crawl this area. Crawl-delay — tells robots to wait a certain number of seconds before continuing the crawl. Sitemap — specifies the sitemap location. Noindex — tells Google to remove pages from the index. # — comments out a line so it will not be read. * — match any text. $ — the URL must end here. Other things you should know about robots.txt Robots.txt must be in the main folder, i.e., http://ift.tt/1jLiEV5. The future of paid search buying

What is the future of paid search buying? Will the search engines or bid management platforms release an innovation that transforms how we buy? Will a new player emerge and totally revolutionize the search industry? When we look at the most sophisticated ways to buy, we’ll find some clues about what the future holds…. Technically savvy search marketers can be innovative with campaigns above and beyond what bid management platforms (BMPs) provide. They can expertly work in between the BMPs and UIs, using advanced practices such as AdWords scripting. This is great, and we may see more of this in the future. However, the most sophisticated buying is done in a completely algorithmic fashion using in-memory computing systems with active API data transfer. AdWords Price Extensions spotted on desktop

Google officially launched price extensions for mobile text ads out of beta in July. Not surprisingly, they now appear to be extending to desktop. Initially, price extensions debuted in a list on mobile, as shown in the example from Google below.  As of last week, that format has switched over to a swipeable card format in which price extensions appear in a horizontal strip as shown below. The horizontal layout is what has been spotted on desktop by Conrad O’Connell of Serptests.com in ads for Airbnb, an early beta tester of price extensions on mobile. Advertisers can use the extensions to call out product or service offerings and starting prices by brands, events, locations, neighborhoods, product categories, product tiers, services, service categories or service tiers I have not seen any price extensions on desktop yet, but keep an eye out for them. New take on Showcase Shopping ads? Categories of used items showing for retailer outlet queries

A strange thing happened just now when I was searching to find out whether the promotions extension Google is testing is also showing on mobile (it is). I came across an example of what appears to be a Showcase Shopping ad for the first time in the wild. When Google introduced Showcase ads, the idea was to spotlight retailer collections on broad, non-brand search queries like “summer dresses.” One of the odd things about what I found today is that these examples are all showing on retailer brand terms, not broad, non-brand queries. This format appeared on brand+outlet queries: “talbots outlet,” “banana republic outlet” and “ann taylor outlet.” When I first saw the Shopping result on the Talbots query, I assumed the ads linked to a Shopping page featuring the items shown in the ads, among other items in the category sold by Talbots itself. But then I saw the results for “banana republic outlet” and “ann taylor outlet” featuring used items in Search Engine Land Source

Thirteen things marketers want to know about expanded text ads, direct from Google

Expanded text ads (ETAs) are a big deal. At least a dozen articles on this fine site can attest to that fact (including one that I wrote myself). Spread out across all of the articles and discussions online, I’ve read more than a bit of speculation. So, I decided to get together with the product management team behind expanded text ads to definitively answer some of the most common questions. 1. Does anything bad happen if I wait until the last possible moment to upgrade? You’re not directly penalized or anything like that. However, I wouldn’t recommend sitting on your hands. Think about how long you’ve been honing your standard text ads — probably years, right? Early adopters of ETAs have generally said that iterating on successful ads is crucial. The earlier you adopt, the earlier you start learning things. 2. How do ETAs interact in the auction, especially with standard text ads still running? Nothing about the AdWords auction has fundamentally changed. Each Search Engine Land Source

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization As we all know, there is a lot that goes into having a successful online presence. However, something that many people don’t think enough about is Search Engine Optimization. The basic objective of SEO is to improve your ranking on search engines – like google for instance. And as you know, the higher you appear on search pages, the more people will access your website and learn about your company. There are other ways that can help your website appear higher on search results, like SEM for instance; however, with SEM, you have to pay to make your ad appear on top of the search results. But if you stop paying… Well, your ad disappears. SEO is a way to improve your organic, unpaid search ranking with long-term results. And have you noticed the map on Google? Well, it’s all based on SEO! If you want your local company to appear on top of organic search results and be listed on the map, you need to boost your SEO. So… how can you do this? Think About the Technicalities The first thing you need to take into mind is the technical backend work. What you see matters, but what happens under the skin is even more important for SEO. Basically, you have to log all of your information into your website’s code, and do this over and over again every time you update your website. We won’t lie: It is a lot of work that requires a lot of specialized skills. Modernize Your Website, and keep users on the hook The second step is to modernize your website, and to make sure that it is mobile responsive: your website needs to look great on any device. But don’t stop there: once companies have websites created, they tend to neglect them… and this has a very negative impact on search ranking. You should update your website regularly: Create videos or articles that are related to your company, or set up a blog! Google will give you significant kudos SEO points for fresh and rich content! Connect your Website to Social Media Finally, you should be active on social media, as it will boost your social presence, give you more content substance, and improve your SEO. These three steps will not only make your business gain popularity, look professional and reliable, but they will also help your website’s organic ranking. However, doing proper SEO takes a lot of time and pretty technical expertise… plus the rules evolve very often, as Google changes its algorithms regularly. And remember that if you’re not proactive on SEO, your ranking will suffer negatively. But don’t worry! Localsphere will help you all the way. We love online advertising and local businesses, and we’ll do everything to make your company stand out. We will make you love this new digital world. Check out our website: www.localsphere.com

How to avoid an outbound link penalty from Google

Most of us are aware of link penalties that occur if you have low-quality or spam links pointing to your site. But did you know you can also be penalized by Google for how you link to other websites from your site? Yup, you sure can. It’s called an “unnatural outbound links” penalty, and similar to the inbound link penalty, it can be applied partially or sitewide. Recently, we conducted an audit for a new client, and we flagged the spammy linking that was being done in a particular section of their site. The content manager was unknowingly allowing guest bloggers to submit content to be published with links pointing back to their sites. This content contained a high volume of links and overoptimized anchor text. Our recommendations to remove these links were ignored and not seen as high-priority, despite our efforts to convey the severity of this issue. Then Google released the Penguin 4 real-time update. Soon after, our client’s site was flagged for a Search Engine Land Source

Coaxing smarter paid search bidding decisions out of sparse conversion data

Paid search is an industry that’s grounded in data and statistics, but one that requires practitioners who can exercise a healthy dose of common sense and intuition in building and managing their programs. Trouble can arise, though, when our intuition runs counter to the stats and we don’t have the systems or safeguards in place to prevent a statistically unwise decision. Should you pause or bid down that keyword? Consider a keyword that has received 100 clicks but hasn’t produced any orders. Should the paid search manager pause or delete this keyword for not converting? It may seem like that should be plenty of volume to produce a single conversion, but the answer obviously depends on how well we expect the keyword to convert in the first place, and also on how aggressive we want to be in giving our keywords a chance to succeed. If we assume that each click on a paid search ad is independent from the Search Engine Land Source

Boost your conversion rate by 45% today… no, really!

The goal of any good marketing campaign is conversions — or better yet, sales. Yes, key performance indicators (KPIs) like rankings and traffic can help you figure out whether or not your campaigns are on track, but if your marketing doesn’t lead to action (a conversion), it isn’t doing your business a whole lot of good. Obviously, the more conversions you can squeeze out of your traffic, the better, which is why conversion rate optimization (CRO) has become such a hot topic in digital marketing. But what if I told you that you could increase your conversion rate by 45 percent… today? Odds are, you’d probably think I was full of it. And, to be honest, you’d be partially right. Most companies can’t produce those sorts of conversion rate increases overnight. That being said, most marketers really can improve their apparent conversion rates by 45 percent in just one day. See how Google is showing even more Shopping Ads on desktop this season

As product listing ads continue to resonate with consumers and drive clicks for advertisers, Google has experimented with showing more of them on the page over the years. As we head into Holiday Season 2016, Google is continuing to ratchet up the count and is showing PLAs in cards rather than single ad packs. On some queries now, Google shows as many as 15 product listing ads (PLAs) on phones and tablets and up to 18 PLAs on desktop, thanks to the scrolling slider of ads. The slider won out over a test early this year that showed up to 16 PLAs when a user clicked to expand the block of ads and rolled out to desktop earlier this fall. CPC Strategy began noticing a new slider treatment being tested and more ads showing in the right-hand column on desktop this week. Where do I vote? Election Day Google doodle offers final reminder to vote

Election Day is here, and Google is putting up its final effort to remind people to get to the polls and cast their vote. Today’s Election Day doodle is an animated GIF of each letter remembering it’s time to vote and running off to stand in line at the voting booth. Like Sunday’s and yesterday’s US Election Day reminder doodles, today’s doodle leads to a search for “where do I vote” and includes the usual sharing icon. In the weeks leading up to Election Day, Google has rolled out a number of tools encouraging people to vote, from the state-by-state voting guide and an interactive voter registration tool to the “Where do I vote” tool that helps voters find polling locations. Later this evening, Google will be showing election results in real time directly in search and will begin airing live Election Day coverage on YouTube from NBC, PBS, MTV, Bloomberg, Telemundo and The Young Turks starting at 7:00 p.m. ET. 9 hard truths about links

Countless articles about links are written every day. Many of them are excellent, filled with some really good tips to help you do well. Some of them are awful, full of bad advice. However, the biggest thing that bugs me about link-building advice is this: a lot of it pretends to offer guarantees. People talk about how to Penguin-proof sites, how to avoid being manually penalized and so on. As an extremely paranoid link builder who has seen many examples of unfairness online, I don’t believe there are any guarantees, and below you’ll see why that is. 1. No link is risk-free How many types of links have previously been acceptable, only to eventually be written into Google’s guidelines as being a link scheme or some other violation? For example, theoretically, a nofollowed link should be risk-free. Would I bet on it? Nope. And honestly, who has a profile full of only nofollowed links? That would look very strange, no? Google SEO for Dummies

Google SEO for Dummies Google SEO For Dummies, Deadbeats, and Beginners! In this video, I reveal “The Magic 3” web properties you can use to leverage into better search engine rankings in very little time. Google puts special weight to 3 specific web 2.0 properties, and I show you how to leverage them in this video. Learn exactly what you need to know about external search engine optimization here. Alright so Google SEO in a nutshell is as follows: 1) Create good content. Without this, you might as well forget all your SEO efforts as they will be a complete waste in the end. Now what I define as “quality content” is stuff created specifically with the end user in mind. When you create videos and blog posts that your targeted audience is genuinely interested in, this will increase the time they spend consuming your content. Google LOVES this, and will rank your website accordingly. My general rule of thumb is to create content that I personally would spend my own time consuming. 2) A few backlinks from highly targeted, relevant content outweigh HUNDREDS of low quality backlinks. 3) 3 Web properties that I spent effort into building up are Tumblr, WordPress.com, and Weebly mini-sites. 4) I usually always work my YouTube channel and blog into the equation by mixing up links and video embeds on their respective content on my web 2.0 mini sites. All in all, this video shows you exactly how to rank in Google even if you’re a complete beginner. Keep things simple. Deliver good stuff, and the results typically follow. Remember: never try to “game” Google. They are incredibly smart at filtering out tricks. Give them exactly what they want, and they will reward you for years to come. I hope you enjoyed this video. Google to add presidential, senatorial & congressional election results directly in search

In addition to posting an Election Day reminder doodle and offering up an interactive tool that helps voters find polling locations, Google will be delivering real-time election results directly in search after the polls close tomorrow. “Starting when the polls close on Election Day, you will be able to find US election results integrated right into your Google searches in over 30 languages around the world,” writes Google Search VP of Engineering Shashi Thakur, in a blog post shared on the Official Google Blog, Google’s Politics and Elections Blog and the official YouTube Blog. Google says searchers will be able to find results for the presidential, senatorial, congressional and gubernatorial races, along with results for state-level referendums and ballot propositions. (While Google did not name a specific query that would surface results, the animated GIF included “election results” as the search term.) According to the blog post, YouTube will also be airing live election coverage starting at 7:00 p.m. ET Search Engine Land Source

For e-commerce success: SEO > aesthetics

The world of e-commerce optimization is vast and complex, and it demands a particular level of attention in order to function and perform correctly. Over the last 10 years, I have had the opportunity to manage a variety of enterprise-level e-commerce websites that offer everything from athletic gear to office supplies. Regardless of the intended audience, most e-commerce sites suffer from similar optimization issues. These issues prevent them from maximizing their exposure to qualified traffic and the related revenue. Usually, these problems are connected to how business stakeholders approach the development of their e-commerce platform, placing user experience and aesthetics over search engine optimization (SEO). When brands focus on building e-commerce environments that are attractive and functional but ignore or forget about SEO, they immediately lose opportunities to attract and convert new customers from organic channels. The good news is that by adhering to the following e-commerce optimization recommendations, you can create an environment that is functional and attractive and introduces your brand Search Engine Land Source

Google begins mobile-first indexing, using mobile content for all search rankings

Kashin / Shutterstock.com Google has begun testing its mobile-first index, which will primarily look at the mobile version of your website for its ranking signals and fall back on the desktop version when there is no mobile version. We expected this was coming and even heard about it over a year ago, but this is the first time Google has posted details about the mobile-first index on their own blog. Most of Google searches are mobile, but Google’s index is desktop Google explained that it sees more mobile searches than desktop searches on a daily basis. But when Google looks to evaluate a page’s ranking in Google, it currently looks at the desktop version of the site — an issue we pointed out over a year ago. To fix this, Google will look at the content, links and structured data of the mobile version of your site if one is available. Web design & web development – What’s the difference? | CharliMarieTV There is often confusion around what exactly web design and development are and that they’re two separate roles. Find out why in this video! Study shows Google’s Possum update changed 64% of local SERPs

In the local SEO community, Google’s recent Possum update was a very big deal. To those of us who regularly track the search results for local businesses, it was obvious there were massive changes on September 1. The SEO community as a whole has been relatively quiet about this huge update, and I believe this is because this update primarily impacted the Local/Maps search results and not organic. SERP trackers like MozCast and Algoroo do a fabulous job of tracking changes in the search results, but this algorithm update didn’t seem to make any massive impact in the charts. I believe that is because local queries that trigger a 3-pack are only a fraction of what these programs track. In all likelihood, the majority of the SERPs they track would not contain a 3-pack — and therefore, big changes in the 3-pack wouldn’t necessarily show on the radar. I wanted to know exactly how much of a shake-up this algorithm was when it came to Search Engine Land Source

Introducing Open Garden

A new movement in marketing is growing — and you’re probably starting to hear about it in the media, at events and in the boardroom. Open Garden is a blueprint for a marketing and advertising ecosystem that’s connected at the data layer. It’s a simple, transformative idea. By building your own Open Garden, you can bring together your fragmented platforms, partners, applications and channels. Then you’ll be in a position to deliver personalized omnichannel experiences your customers might just shed tears for. But here’s the all-important part: building an Open Garden means you no longer have to cede control of your data to any vendor or limit your reach to any channel or application. Expanded text ads that kick butt

Expanded text ads (ETAs) in AdWords are here, and we’ve had some real success with them thus far. In this article, I’ll talk about what we’ve seen in testing and what is working for us with ETAs. I’ll also cover some pointers on elements you can include to make ads more effective and compelling to online searchers. Note: Advertisers will no longer by able to create or edit standard text ads as of January 31, 2017, meaning that you should be fully transitioned to expanded text ads by then. It’s not too late, and there’s time to get things sorted. Expanded text ads — what’s been working We’ve done a fair bit of testing, and we’ve determined a few major takeaways in our initial ETA tests: 1. Longer text ads convert better We didn’t take Google’s word for it, so we’ve been testing shorter copy (using standard text ads) vs. longer copy (using the ETA format), and the longer copy has been converting better. My theory is that Search Engine Land Source

5 ingredients for writing the perfect expanded text ad

If Google’s expanded text ads (ETAs) are supposed to perform better than standard text ads, why did Google delay the sunset for creating legacy ads from late October 2016 to the end of January 2017? A recent conversation I had with a Google product manager explained it pretty well. To start: quality matters. When expanded text ads are well-optimized, they outperform legacy ads; however, standard ads have had years to go through numerous optimizations, and in some cases, a brand-new ETA may not immediately outperform. The date was moved back to give people more time to experiment with their expanded text ads. The extra time is important so people have the time to test and iterate ads, while also giving holiday optimizations their proper due. At Optmyzr, we were curious what characteristics great-performing ETAs have in common, so we looked at 700 accounts, 1.2 million ads and over one billion impressions. I presented our findings at the MarketingFestival event last week in the Czech Search Engine Land Source
