Callout and Review extensions now available in Bing Ads

Bing Ads rolled out callout and review extensions last week. The new ad extensions are available in all Bing Ads markets, with the exceptions of Hong Kong and Taiwan. The ad shown above features both of these new extensions. Callout extensions Advertisers can add up to 20 callouts in their campaigns and ad groups and must have a minimum of two callout extensions for them to display. One thing to note: Bing says the format in which callouts show can vary. In the ad above, there are actually two lines of callout extensions showing — one with dot separators (starts with “Free Cancellation”) and one with dash separators (starts with “The 20 best hotels in Chicago, IL”). Review extensions Reviews for review extensions must come from “reliable, well-established and trusted sources.” The review must appear on the review landing page — and advertisers are not charged for clicks on those links. Google adds Merchant Center Feed Rules to make formatting shopping feeds easier

Let’s face it, shopping feeds are a pain. Such a pain that an entire cottage industry has sprung up to help retailers with the nuisance of product feed formatting and management. On Tuesday, Google released Feed Rules to make it a little easier for those advertisers and retailers managing Google Shopping feeds on their own to get feed data formatted correctly. “You can export and submit your product data in your own format, and use different rules to transform it into product attributes and values that follow the Google Shopping feed specification, directly in Merchant Center,” Sven Herschel, product manager for Google Shopping, explained in a blog post. Google brings back in-depth articles to search results after 17-day outage

Back in August 2013, Google launched a feature named in-depth articles in their search results after a couple of months of testing. Since then, it really only had one major change in terms of how it appeared in the search results. Seventeen days ago, in-depth articles completely dropped out of the Google search results. During that time, we emailed Google several times for an explanation and have not heard back. Today, the in-depth articles are back in the search results, leading us to believe that this was an unexpected bug or outage with this feature. The Mozcast features tool tracked the loss of in-depth articles in the Google search results over time. As you can see, they disappeared on April 9 and returned today, April 26: From time to time, Google does have random bugs with their search results, but this outage seemed unusually long. Google has added a new feature to allow webmasters to unsubscribe from certain email notifications they get from the Google Search Console. Google announced the new feature on Google+, saying, “We’ve added a new feature to help you tailor the type of messages you receive.” Here is a screen shot of the check box for “enable email notifications,” and then the option to “mute” or “unmute” specific notifications: Google said: When you receive a message you’d like to disable, click “Unsubscribe from this type of message” in the footer of the email. Messages you’ve disabled will be listed in your Search Console preferences page — just like on the screenshot. You can re-enable messages from there, as well. There’s no fixed path to purchase — customers each travel a different route through their favorite apps, media and websites to find and select where they will spend their hard-earned money. The Local Search Association (LSA) conducted its annual Local Media Tracking Study of more than 8,000 consumers in 2015 and found that consumers started their search for local information most commonly with search engines, but only by a plurality — 40 percent. William Shakespeare Google Doodle celebrates iconic writer & England’s St. George Day

Google is giving William Shakespeare prime placement on its homepage today as the world celebrates the iconic writer’s birthday. According to the Google Doodle blog, today’s William Shakespeare doodle also marks St. George Day, a British holiday to celebrate the patron saint of England. Known as the dragon slayer, St. George can be spotted in the upper left corner of the doodle facing off the dragon in the top right corner. A creative tour de force, Shakespeare officially wrote 38 plays in his 52 years, some of which you can spot in today’s Doodle. Dear Google: Here’s a search marketers’ AdWords UI wishlist

Last month, Google teased a new look for AdWords. The company has said it will be working on redesigning the user interface over the next year or so. Throughout the process, Google will be reaching out to all types of advertisers — from local businesses to large agencies — to get feedback on proposed changes. In that spirit, Search Engine Land reached out to paid search marketers to get their top wishes for the new AdWords UI. Generally, marketers we spoke to said they are pretty satisfied with the existing UI (considering how it stacks up against the UIs of newer ad platforms) but are optimistic about the update. “Overall, I’m happy with the current design, but admit it’s become unwieldy as the years have gone on and more has been added. I can’t wait to see what they come up with!” says Melissa Mackey of Gyro. IAB: desktop and mobile paid search bring in roughly half of 2015 digital ad revenue

Earlier today the IAB released its Q4 and full year 2015 digital ad revenue report for the US market. Online ad spending last year was worth nearly $60 billion ($59.6 billion), which represented more than 20 percent growth over 2014. Below is the 2015 breakdown by ad category: Desktop-based paid search brought in 34 percent of total ad revenue or roughly $20.3 billion. This was down from 38 percent a year ago. However real dollars grew by more than $1 billion over 2014. Mobile ad revenue was approximately 35 percent of the 2015 total or $20.8 billion, a 66 percent increase from the 2014 total ($12.5 billion). Of the 2015 mobile total, 43 percent ($8.9 billion) was from paid search. The combined value of paid search on the desktop and in mobile was roughly $29.2 billion in 2015. Google makes 2 ad updates that will affect local search marketers

Google has made changes this week to local search results and Google Maps that will impact retailers and service providers with physical locations. Ads in Local Finder results Local SEO specialist Brian Barwig was among those who have noticed the ads appearing in the Local Finder results — reached after clicking “More places” from a local three-pack in the main Google search results. After launching podcasts in Google Play Music on Monday, Google is now making it possible to listen to podcasts directly in its Android app. According to the announcement, listeners can choose from thousands of podcasts, including Serial, This American Life, Hidden Brain, Fresh Air and Radiolab. To try it out, search for a podcast and you’ll see three recent episodes, a play button for each, and an option to see more episodes.Google Inside Search Blog Google says its in-app podcast function includes play, pause, rewind and fast-forward controls. Google drove 95 percent of US smartphone paid search clicks in Q1 [Merkle]

  If there’s one theme to be taken from Merkle’s Q1 Digital Marketing Report, it’s that Google is miles ahead of Bing and Yahoo in driving and monetizing mobile search traffic. Driven almost entirely by Google, mobile paid search continues to grow, with smartphone click share rising from 33 percent in Q4 2015 to 39 percent in Q1 2016 overall. On Google, 57 percent of paid search clicks came from mobile in Q1. Overall, desktop paid search clicks were flat and tablet clicks were off five percent year over year, compared to 101-percent growth for smartphone clicks. Google paid search saw solid growth in Q1 among Merkle’s client base, with spend rising 25 percent year over year as click volume increased 33 percent. Overall, CPCs fell six percent as mobile click share continued to rise. Non-brand search ad clicks grew 42 percent, and spend on non-brand keywords rose 24 percent, the highest growth rate seen in six quarters. Bing Shopping Campaigns now out of beta in UK

Now, when your search query has local intent, and it brings up the “3-pack” or “local pack” in the Google search results, Google may offer you additional search filters for that query. For example, when I search for [la bella], Google offers me additional filters to show results “within 5 miles,” or “open now,” or “top rated,” or even more. Others, depending on the searcher’s location, may see “italian,” “pizza” and other options. Google opens home service ads to HVAC services and electricians

Google is building out its home service ad offerings. The ads are now available to electricians and HVAC service providers. The local home service ad product rolled out to the San Francisco Bay area last July. The ads typically show three providers with ratings, phone number and a call to action to send a request. Users looking for a plumber, locksmith — and now electrician or HVAC provider — can send a contact request to up to three providers through the Google form. After going through an application and background check process, providers can set up their ad listings in AdWords Express. Google also announced home service ads are now available in Sacramento. YouTube Search Engine Optimization Tips 2016 YouTube Search Engine Optimization Tips 2016 Get INSTANT Page 1 Rankings HERE: http://Page1Method.com Video optimization refers to a set of technologies used by mobile service providers to improve consumer viewing experience by reducing video start times or re-buffering events. The process also aims to reduce the amount of network bandwidth consumed by video sessions.[1] While optimization technology can be applied to videos played on a variety of media-consuming devices, the costliness of mobile streaming and increase in mobile video viewers has created a very high demand for optimization solutions among mobile service providers.[2] When streaming over-the-top (OTT) content and video on demand, systems do not typically recognize the specific size, type, and viewing rate of the video being streamed. Video sessions, regardless of the rate of views, are each granted the same amount of bandwidth. This bottlenecking of content results in longer buffering time and poor viewing quality.[3] Some solutions, such as upLynk and Skyfire’s Rocket Optimizer, attempt to resolve this issue by using cloud-based solutions to adapt and optimize over-the-top content. Adaptive bitrate (ABR) video streaming technology was implemented to solve some of the challenges with streaming high bitrate videos. Videos streamed using traditional formats such as progressive download and RTSP have a common challenge; any given video must be encoded at a specific target bitrate (e.g., 500 kbps) – and that is the bitrate regardless of the access network over which it is delivered. If the chosen target bitrate is too high, the video will not be delivered smoothly over lower-speed networks and there will be slow start times and re-buffering throughout the video. Even on fast networks like LTE 4G, slow start times and re-buffering will occur during times of congestion or high network utilization. If the chosen bitrate is low, on the other hand, the video quality will be lower – thereby reducing the customer’s quality of experience. There are a number of ways of dealing with these challenges. One way is to take the YouTube approach. YouTube uses HTTP progressive download, and makes multiple versions of the video available at different resolutions and bitrates. Users themselves can then select the quality / bitrate that works best for them. If stalling or rebuffering occur, then can select the next lower resolution and continue viewing the video. Adaptive bitrate effectively automates these resolution / quality adjustments on behalf of the user. Each ABR video is encoded at multiple bitrates, each broken into “chunks” of varying lengths (e.g., Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming generally uses 10s chunks). If network bandwidth is insufficient to deliver the video at this bitrate, the client will request the next “chunk” to be at a lower bitrate; quality of video will be reduced, but re-buffering will be avoided. HTTP to HTTPS: An SEO’s guide to securing a website

Back when I wrote the article, “Why Everyone Should Be Moving To HTTP/2,” it was meant to bring awareness to an awesome protocol upgrade that I thought was an easy win to make a website faster. Since then, I have spoken to hundreds of business owners and SEOs about upgrading, performed dozens of upgrades and troubleshot dozens more. I have realized that there is still one big hurdle for both business owners and SEOs: HTTPS. The gotcha moment with HTTP/2 is that most browsers only support this new protocol over a secure connection, which means you have to migrate your website to HTTPS. It shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone that Google and many others want the web to be more secure. Google had their HTTPS everywhere campaign, they announced HTTPS as a ranking signal, and they have started indexing secure pages over unsecured pages. Report: Apple building AdWords-like ad product for the App Store

Taking a page from Google, Apple is reportedly building a paid-search-style ad product for its App Store. According to Bloomberg, Apple “has constructed a secret team to explore changes to the App Store, including a new strategy for charging developers to have their apps more prominently displayed.” Bloomberg says that there are roughly 100 employees working on it. Some of the engineers on the project are from Apple’s iAd unit, which has substantially scaled down over the past year or so. Given app discovery challenges, I would expect an auction for prominent placement to be both popular and lucrative for Apple (provided Apple does a good job with it). When the App Store store launched in July 2008 there were only 552 apps. Today there are more than 1.5 million, creating a significant visibility/discovery problem for publishers and developers. How to adjust SEO strategy to Google’s new SERP ad layout

Removing the ads from the right rail of Google search results pages was a long time coming (well, a long time for digital). An eye-mapping study from last year showed that people have gone from viewing the SERPs in an “F” pattern to doing a quick vertical scan down the left side, mostly ignoring the ads on the right side. People are also scanning the page faster by taking only eight or nine seconds to click, down from 14 to 15 seconds in the 2005 study. It only makes sense that Google would eventually react to how searchers are adapting to the line of links they are used to by taking away the right bar. This is also further evidence of Google’s continued gravitation toward being a mobile-first search engine, since the right column of ads was not visible on mobile search. While I understand why SEO professionals might worry, I don’t think the recent move to showing up to four ads above organic results will have Search Engine Land Source

2016 State of Link Building Survey coverage

Link acquisition is always changing. Tactics, perceptions, and even the way search engines evaluate links are continuously evolving. Because of the ever-changing nature of link building, it’s always interesting to examine the state of the industry. Recently, my colleague Nicholas Chimonas partnered with Moz and Credo to conduct a link-building industry survey. Nicholas detailed his process and the results from the survey in an excellent post on Moz. I want to cover some of the key takeaways from this survey and offer my own insight and opinions on the current state and future of link building. Here are some quick, high-level stats on the survey participants: 435 people participated in the survey. Most work at agencies (42 percent) or are in-house employees (27 percent). The majority work at companies with 1–50 employees (65 percent). A large portion work alone (33 percent) or in teams of two to five people (47 percent), with varying structures. Don’t trust Google to structure your local data

I have been noticing a lot of Google Answer Boxes showing up for queries with local intent these days. My recent post, Are You Doing Local Answers SEO? pointed out this fantastic result HomeAdvisor is getting for “replace furnace” queries: When clients get these local answer boxes, they often perform significantly better than regular #1 organic listings. In our opinion, these seem to be driven primarily by the following factors: Domain/page authority Text that appears to answer the query Easy-to-understand page structures (broken up into sections that target specific queries, tables, prices and so on). Visual analysis of AdWords data: a primer

Data visualization is one of the most powerful tools available if you want to explore and understand your data, whether it’s on a small scale or at a scale which qualifies it as “big data.” In this post, I wanted to run through some of the fundamental elements of data visualization and illustrate why these concepts start to reveal insight once combined. I’ll use a very simple set of data with some fairly logical conclusions in order to focus on the effect of different techniques, avoiding adding any unnecessary complexity. A simple scatter plot example For the purpose of this post, let’s consider a scatter plot approach for a modest set of AdWords keyword data. My fictional dataset consists of data for ~700 keywords for a period of one month, with fields reflecting cost, clicks, conversion and revenue metrics. Google My Business iOS app now lets business owners manage holiday & special hours

Google just released an updated version of their Google My Business app for iOS. The biggest new feature is the ability of business owners to change their hours of operation temporarily for a holiday or special event directly in the app. In the past, you were able to manage these special hours via the Google My Business web portal and/or via uploading a spreadsheet with special hours. Other new features in the iOS app include: a drag-and-drop menu to change your primary business category and phone number; a quick and easy way to mark whether or not your business is permanently closed; and new support for landscape mode in the app. I personally updated my app, and when I try to open it, it freezes out and won’t let me in. There may be a bug with this update, and we’ve reached out to Google to confirm. Microsoft partners with HackerRank to deliver executable code in Bing search

According to a report from TechCrunch, Microsoft has partnered with the programming community website HankerRank to bring code snippets into Bing’s search results. TechCrunch says the partnership makes it possible not only to locate code quickly via search, but also edit and execute code right from the search results page. Search for something like “string concat C#” or a similar question and Bing will pop up the editor for you. Using the widget, you can also switch to other languages as well. Google makes AdWords Products tab more useful for Shopping campaigns

Google is finally bringing some functional heft to the Products tab. Managers will now find “Product status” and “Effective max CPC” columns in the Products tab in AdWords. The Products status column (You can add it from the Columns drop-down) will let you know if a specific product is ready to serve, disapproved, excluded or out of stock. With the new Effective max CPC column, you can make bid adjustments right from the Products tab on individual products within your product groups. Speaking of product groups, in the Products groups tab, new inventory status columns are now available. See percentages and totals for products ready to serve, active, approved and total submitted products. This will save you some time, since you won’t have to dig into Merchant Center. And in another bit of a bonus for Shopping campaigns managers, Google has also added more Shopping info in AdWords Report Editor. You can now see attributes like brand or product type for Shopping campaigns and build Search Engine Land Source

Log analysis has evolved to become a fundamental part of technical SEO audits. Server logs allow us to understand how search engine crawlers interact with our website, and analysis of your server logs can lead to actionable SEO insights you might not have gleaned otherwise. First: Choosing your tools Many tools are available to help with a server log analysis, and which one is right for you will depend on your technical knowledge and resources. There are three types of log file analysis tools that you will want to consider (unless you’re doing it from the command line, which I wouldn’t recommend if you don’t already have experience with it): Excel If you know your way around Excel — if creating pivot tables and using VLOOKUP is second nature to you — you might want to give Excel a go by following the steps shown in this guide by BuiltVisible.
